After eight years of silence, advocacy finally secured Ruth Odima the $900 she was owed—proof that for many workers in Lebanon, justice comes through pressure, not the courts.

Ruth’s Joy After Receiving Her Salary Following an 8-Year Wait
THE STORY
Ruth Odima, Kenyan, was one of This Is Lebanon’s first cases. She suffered sexual harassment and non-payment of salary. When she returned to Kenya, we published her story on our website and social media platforms. Fast forward eight years. The family of the man who abused Ruth contacted us saying they would pay the $900 salary they owed if we would remove the post and article. We were happy to do this as our goal is always to get workers their unpaid salaries. Posting is a last resort and only happens after negotiations, sometimes very lengthy, have failed. Congrats, Ruth, on finally receiving the salary you were owed. If only there were a judicial system in Lebanon that had protected you so you didn’t have to wait so long to get what was rightfully yours.

This Is Lebanon was established in 2017 with the aim of working towards abolishing the kafala system in Lebanon. Our goal has been to raise awareness about the dangers of the kafala system by exposing the horrific conditions under which migrant domestic workers live and the perpetrators of abuse as well as advocating with and on behalf of migrant domestic workers. Ultimately, This Is Lebanon gives a voice to workers and encourages witnesses of abuse to come forward.
Kafala (the Arabic word for sponsorship) refers to the set of regulations and administrative practices used to sponsor and employ migrant workers in Lebanon, mostly women from African and Asian countries working for private households. Domestic workers are excluded from Lebanese labor law and lack basic protections. The kafala system protects abusers and denies domestic workers of basic human rights. The high degree of control over workers’ rights provided by the kafala system has led to cases of modern slavery, human trafficking, and exploitation.

الجنسية، من أوائل القضايا التي تابعتها منظمة «This Is Lebanon». وتعرّضت للتحرش الجنسي ولعدم دفع راتبها. وعندما عادت إلى كينيا، نشرنا قصتها على موقعنا الإلكتروني ومنصاتنا على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.
وبعد مرور ثماني سنوات، تواصلت معنا عائلة الرجل الذي أساء إلى روث، وأبدت استعدادها لدفع الراتب المستحق البالغ 900 دولار مقابل حذف المنشور والمقال. ورحّبنا بذلك، إذ نهدف دائمًا إلى تمكين العاملات من استرداد أجورهن غير المدفوعة. ونلجأ إلى النشر كخيار أخير فقط، بعد فشل المفاوضات التي قد تطول أحيانًا.
نهنّئ روث على استلامها أخيرًا الراتب الذي كان من حقها، ونتمنى لو وفّر النظام القضائي في لبنان الحماية اللازمة لها، حتى لا تضطر إلى الانتظار كل هذه السنوات للحصول على حقها.

تشير "كفالة" (وهي كلمة عربية تعني الكفالة) إلى مجموعة الأنظمة والممارسات الإدارية المستخدمة لرعاية وتوظيف العمال المهاجرين في لبنان، ومعظمهم من النساء من البلدان الأفريقية والآسيوية ويعملن في منازل خاصة. إن عاملات المنازل مستبعَدات من قانون العمل اللبناني ويفتقرن إلى تدابير الحماية الأساسية. ونظام "كفالة" يحمي المستغلين ويحرم عاملات المنازل من حقوق الإنسان الأساسية. وهذه الدرجة العالية من القبضة على حقوق العاملات التي يوفرها نظام "كفالة" أدّت إلى حالات العبودية الحديثة والاتجار بالبشر والاستغلال.
