Modupe Escapes “From The Mouth of The Lion”
Modupe's experiences in Lebanon showcase the problems with kafala.

THE STORY
When 26-year-old Adesogbon Modupe returned to Nigeria she sent This Is Lebanon a video expressing her gratitude for being “rescued from the mouth of the lion.” That is not an exaggeration given her experiences during her 3 year 2 month stay in Lebanon. Modupe had multiple employers who failed to pay her the full salary she was owed.
Her first employer, a Baalbek resident, employed her for 10.5 months but only paid her for 6.5 months.
Her second employer kept her for 22 days without any payment.
Her third employer kept her for just under 2 years and paid her 300,000 Lebanese Lira per month. When this was exchanged to dollars she received $1,400 - a shortfall of $3,000. He did not do Modupe’s paperwork, keeping her undocumented. She was then sent back to the agent’s house. Modupe’s agent, an unregistered ‘simsar’ in Baalbek, hit her and screamed at her for asking for her salary. He did promise to send her to her consulate and then back home but, instead, sold her to another agent in Bint Jbeil for $2,000.
From the agency in Bint Jbeil, Modupe was sent to her fourth employer, totally against her will. Fortunately, at this point her luck improved. Her fourth and final employer was a Lebanese American. The agent told him to try Modupe out for a few days. When This Is Lebanon contacted him, he recognized that Modupe was a victim of human-trafficking and was very cooperative. He took Modupe to the Nigerian consulate and This Is Lebanon paid for her air ticket home.
When asked if she would like to expose her abusers on social media, Modupe said she would
“leave them to God”
so their names have not been used.
Modupe’s experience in Lebanon reflects a broader pattern of underpayment and non-payment of salaries by many employers, as well as the duplicit role carried out by many illegal recruitment agencies who operate with no consequences.

كان لمدوبي عدد من الكفلاء الذين لم يعطوها مرتباتها المالية وبدل اتعابها.
كفيلها الأول من بعلبك ، عملت لديه عشر شهور ونصف ولكنه دفع لها ستة أشهر ونصف فقط
كفيلها الثالث أبقاها قرابة العامين وكان يدفع لها على دولار ١٥٠٠ وعند ذهاب العامة لشراء الدولار لم تحصل على أكثر من ١٤٠٠ دولار من ٣٠٠٠ التي تستحقها. بقيت العاملة دون أوراق لان الكفيل لم يسوي وضعها.
أرسلت العاملة بعد هذه المعاناة إلى مكتب التوظيف في بعلبك والذي هو سمسار غير مرخص، ضربها وشتمها عند سؤالها عن مستحقاتها. وعدها بإرسالها إلى قنصليتها ولكنه باعها إلى مكتب ثان في بنت جبيل بقيمة ٢٠٠٠ دولار.
أرسلت العاملة إلى منزل كفيلها الرابع رغما عن ارادتها، لحسن حظ العاملة ان الكفيل الرابع كان لبناني أمريكي وقد قال له صاحب المكتب ان مادوبي تحت اسم فرد من آل جعفر وهو مسجون. قيل للكفيل أن يبقي العاملة لديه عندها تواصلت معه جمعية This Is Lebanon وعلم الكفيل أن مادوبي ضحية اتجار بالبشر وكان متجاوبا جدا.
أرسل العاملة إلى القنصلية واشترت جمعية This Is Lebanon تذكرة الطائرة إلى بلادها.
طلب من مادوبي أن تفضح مكتب استقدام الخدم على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي ولكنها أجابت:
"انها تترك عقابهم على الله."
خبرة مادوبي في لبنان تنعكس على نمط عدم دفع مستحقات العمال الأجانب كما والدور السيئ الذي يلعبه عدد كبير من مكاتب استقدام الخدم الغير قانونيين الذين يعملون دون حسيب أو رقيب.
