THE STORY
Khadija, 26, Sierra Leonean, was orphaned at an early age. In order to support her children she made the difficult decision to work abroad. Her cousin was a recruiting agent and offered to find her work in Lebanon. She sold everything she owned, including her mobile phone, to raise the money required to go.
Khadija arrived in Lebanon on 19 July 2023. Ten days after arrival, she was given two injections, supposedly immunisations against Tetanus and Polio. Two days after taking the injections she started having seizures, something she had never experienced before. She was alarmed and confused. Her employers became worried and returned her to the agent who, instead of getting her medical treatment, moved her from one employer to another: four in total. Each one returned her when she had seizures in the house. She reported,
“I got beaten by my agent and her husband. I have a proof which is the scars on my body. I was starving because they wouldn’t give me food. They said they spent so much money on me but I did not work. When I told them about the cause of the seizures, the injections that I was given, they did nothing.”
Realizing that they could not place her with any more employers, the agency contacted This Is Lebanon who contributed to the cost of Khadija’s air ticket, arranged follow-up medical care for her in Sierra Leone and provided her with financial assistance. Thankfully, Khadija is now free from the seizures and has been able to return to a normal life.

This Is Lebanon was established in 2017 with the aim of working towards abolishing the kafala system in Lebanon. Our goal has been to raise awareness about the dangers of the kafala system by exposing the horrific conditions under which migrant domestic workers live and the perpetrators of abuse as well as advocating with and on behalf of migrant domestic workers. Ultimately, This Is Lebanon gives a voice to workers and encourages witnesses of abuse to come forward.
Kafala (the Arabic word for sponsorship) refers to the set of regulations and administrative practices used to sponsor and employ migrant workers in Lebanon, mostly women from African and Asian countries working for private households. Domestic workers are excluded from Lebanese labor law and lack basic protections. The kafala system protects abusers and denies domestic workers of basic human rights. The high degree of control over workers’ rights provided by the kafala system has led to cases of modern slavery, human trafficking, and exploitation.

خديجة، في السادسة والعشرين من عمرها، من سيراليون، تيتّمت في سن مبكرة. ومن أجل إعالة أطفالها، اتخذت القرار الصعب بالعمل في الخارج. كان ابن عمها وكيل توظيف وعرض عليها العثور على عمل في لبنان. باعت كل ما تملكه، بما في ذلك هاتفها المحمول، لجمع المال المطلوب للسفر.
وصلت خديجة إلى لبنان في 19 تموز 2023. وبعد عشرة أيام من وصولها، أُعطيَت حقنتين، يفترض أنهما لقاحات ضد الكزاز وشلل الأطفال. بعد يومين من أخذ الحقن، بدأت تعاني من نوبات، وهو أمر لم تختبره من قبل. فزعت واضطربت. وشعر أصحاب العمل بالقلق فأعادوها إلى الوكيل، الذي بدلاً من تأمين العلاج الطبي لها، راح ينقلها من صاحب عمل إلى آخر: أربعة في المجمل. وكان كل واحد منهم يعيدها حين كانت تصاب بنوبات في المنزل. قالت لنا:
"لقد تعرضت للضرب من قبل الوكيلة وزوجها. ولدي الندوب على جسدي دليل على ذلك. كنت أتضور جوعاً لأنهم لم يعطوني طعاماً. قالوا إنهم أنفقوا عليّ الكثير من المال بدون أن أعمل. وحين أخبرتهم عن سبب النوبات، والحقن التي أعطيت لي، لم يفعلوا شيئاً."
وإدراكاً منهم أنهم لم يعد بإمكانهم وضعها لدى أي أرباب عمل آخرين، اتصلت الوكالة بمنظمة "هذا لبنان" التي ساهمت في ثمن تذكرة سفر خديجة، ورتبت لها رعاية طبية تتابع وضعها الصحي في سيراليون وقدمت لها مساعدة مالية. لحسن الحظ، لم تعد خديجة تتعرض الآن لأية نوبات وتمكنت من العودة إلى الحياة الطبيعية.

تأسست جمعية "هذا هو لبنان" عام 2017 بهدف العمل على إلغاء نظام الكفالة في لبنان. إن هدفنا هو رفع مستوى الوعي حول مخاطر نظام الكفالة من خلال فضح الظروف المروعة التي تعيش في ظلها عاملات المنازل المهاجرات ومرتكبي الانتهاكات، فضلاً عن الدفاع عن عاملات المنازل المهاجرات ونيابة عنهن. في نهاية المطاف، تمنح جمعية "هذا لبنان" صوتاً للعاملات وتشجع شهود الانتهاكات على التحدث.
تشير الكفالة إلى مجموعة الأنظمة والممارسات الإدارية المستخدمة لكفالة وتوظيف العمال المهاجرين في لبنان، ومعظمهم من النساء من البلدان الأفريقية والآسيوية اللاتي يعملن لدى أسر خاصة. إن عاملات المنازل مستبعدات من قانون العمل اللبناني ويفتقرن إلى الحماية الأساسية. يحمي نظام الكفالة المعتدين ويحرم عاملات المنازل من حقوق الإنسان الأساسية. أدت الدرجة العالية من السيطرة على حقوق العمال التي يوفرها نظام الكفالة إلى ظهور حالات العبودية الحديثة والإتجار بالبشر والاستغلال.
