Juliana Gets Her Salary from Employer After Sexual Harassment

THE STORY
In August 2020, Juliana, a young Ghanaian woman, contacted This Is Lebanon reporting physical and sexual abuse. Her employer, an old man of 80, would masturbate in front of her despite her constant protestations. She was also owed 4 months’ salary. Juliana had reported the abuse to her agent who declined to help and accused her of lying.
Juliana was able to get video evidence of her employer’s sexual harassment and with this evidence, she escaped from the second story of the house. This Is Lebanon volunteers helped her to get to the Ghanaian consulate, where she hoped to find a sympathetic ear and willing assistance. Not so. Mr. Michel Haddad, the former Honorary Consul for Ghana, sided with the Lebanese employer, denying that the video was evidence of sexual abuse. He even went as far as deleting the video from her phone and warning her that he would have her arrested in Ghana if she “did something stupid.” This was not the first time that Michel Haddad had taken the side of a sexually abusive Lebanese employer. It was 4 months before Juliana was repatriated. Once she was safely home, we contacted her former employer’s family and negotiated until they agreed to pay her full salary owed.

في آب 2020، اتصلت جوليانا، وهي شابة من غانا، بجمعية "هذا لبنان" تبلغنا عن تعرضها للتعنيف الجسدي والاعتداء الجنسي. كان صاحب العمل، وهو رجل كبير السنّ يبلغ من العمر 80 عاماً، يمارس العادة السرية أمام عينيها على الرغم من اعتراضاتها المتواصلة. كما أنه كان مديناً لها برواتب 4 أشهر. كانت جوليانا قد أبلغت وكيلها الذي رفض المساعدة واتهمها بالكذب.
تمكنت جوليانا من تسجيل مقاطع فيديو تشكل دليلاً عن التحرش الجنسي من صاحب العمل، وبهذا الدليل، هربت من الطابق الثاني من المنزل. ساعدها متطوعو جمعية "هذا لبنان" في الوصول إلى قنصلية غانا، حيث كانت تأمل أن تجد أذُناً صاغية للتعاطف معها ومساعدتها. لم يكن الأمر كذلك. وقف السيد ميشيل حداد، القنصل الفخري السابق لغانا، إلى جانب صاحب العمل اللبناني، نافياً أن يكون الفيديو دليلاً على أي اعتداء جنسي. حتى أنه ذهب إلى حد حذف الفيديو من هاتفها وحذرها من أنه سيجعلهم يقبضون عليها في غانا إن "فعلتِ شيئاً أحمقاً". لم تكن هذه هي المرة الأولى التي يقف فيها ميشيل حداد إلى جانب صاحب عمل لبناني قام باعتداء جنسي. بإمكانكم قراءة مثال آخر هنا.
انقضت أربعة أشهر قبل أن تتم إعادة جوليانا إلى وطنها. وبمجرد أن عادت سالمة إلى بلدها، اتصلنا بابن صاحب العمل السابق وأرسلنا إليه مقاطع الفيديو التي سجلتها. وحين طلبنا منه الاختيار بين نشر تحرش والده بالعاملة على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي أو دفع الراتب المستَحَق لجوليانا، اختار الدفع. عندما تلقت جوليانا الدفعة الأخيرة، كتبت لنا:
"شكراً لكم. شكراً لكم. شكراً لكم. إني ممتنة جداً. لقد فعلتم الكثير من أجلي. بارك الله في جمعية "هذا لبنان". إني في غاية السعادة."
