Dr Pierre Hanna expresses his gratitude for TIL's intervention on a case
THE STORY
This Is Lebanon is not only a platform for abused domestic workers seeking support and help. It is more than that. It is a platform for any witness of abuse of domestic workers.
Dr Pierre Hanna contacted This Is Lebanon in March 2022 seeking help on behalf of his domestic worker. She had a friend, Selamawit, who was also a domestic worker in Lebanon whose family had lost contact with her for over a year. Selamawit’s employers had not responded to Dr Hanna’s numerous phone calls or texts; in fact, they blocked him. Selamawit’s family was distressed. Dr Hanna reached out to This Is Lebanon asking for help. At the same time he contacted the Ethiopian consulate in Beirut and General Security.
This Is Lebanon launched a thorough investigation to be able to reach Selamawit’s employer - a university professor who proved to be very elusive. We were able to obtain contact information for her husband and siblings. Selamawit traveled home to Ethiopia on 28 August, 2022 with the $2625 salary she was owed after five months of negotiations - a happy ending for her and her family.

This Is Lebanon was established in 2017 with the aim of working towards abolishing the kafala system in Lebanon. Our goal has been to raise awareness about the dangers of the kafala system by exposing the horrific conditions under which migrant domestic workers live and the perpetrators of abuse as well as advocating with and on behalf of migrant domestic workers. Ultimately, This Is Lebanon gives a voice to workers and encourages witnesses of abuse to come forward.
Kafala (the Arabic word for sponsorship) refers to the set of regulations and administrative practices used to sponsor and employ migrant workers in Lebanon, mostly women from African and Asian countries working for private households. Domestic workers are excluded from Lebanese labor law and lack basic protections. The kafala system protects abusers and denies domestic workers of basic human rights. The high degree of control over workers’ rights provided by the kafala system has led to cases of modern slavery, human trafficking, and exploitation.

ليس "هذا لبنان" منصة لعاملات المنازل اللواتي يتعرضن للاستغلال ويطلبن الدعم والمساعدة فحسب. بل هو أكثر من ذلك. إنها منصة لأي شاهد على استغلال عاملات المنازل. اتصل الدكتور بيار حنا بجمعية "هذا لبنان" في آذار 2022 طالباً المساعدة نيابة عن عاملة منزله. فهي لديها صديقة، سلامويت، كانت أيضاً عاملة منزل في لبنان وقد فقدت عائلتها الاتصال بها لأكثر من عام. لم يردّ أصحاب عمل سلامويت على المكالمات الهاتفية أو الرسائل النصية العديدة للدكتور حنا؛ في الواقع، قاموا بحظره. شعرت أسرة سلامويت بالأسى. تواصل الدكتور حنا مع "هذا لبنان" طالباً المساعدة. وفي الوقت نفسه أجرى اتصالات مع القنصلية الأثيوبية في بيروت والأمن العام.
أطلقت جمعية "هذا لبنان" تحقيقًا شاملاً لتتمكن من الوصول إلى صاحب عمل سلامويت - وهي أستاذة جامعية تبين أنها بعيدة المنال للغاية. تمكنا من الحصول على معلومات الاتصال بزوجها وإخوتها. سافرت سلامويت إلى إثيوبيا في 28 آب 2022 برواتب تبلغ قيمتها 2.625 دولار كانت مستحقة لها بعد خمسة أشهر من المفاوضات - نهاية سعيدة لها ولأسرتها.

تأسس "هذا لبنان" عام 2017 بهدف العمل على إلغاء نظام "كفالة" في لبنان. كان هدفنا هو رفع مستوى الوعي حول مخاطر نظام "كفالة" من خلال الكشف عن مرتكبي الانتهاكات والظروف المروّعة التي تعيش في ظلها عاملات المنازل المهاجرات، فضلاً عن الدفاع عن عاملات المنازل المهاجرات ونيابة عنهن. في النهاية، "هذا لبنان" يجعل صوت العاملات مسموعاً ويشجع الشهود على الانتهاكات على أن يتقدموا للشهادة.
تشير "كفالة" (وهي كلمة عربية تعني الكفالة) إلى مجموعة الأنظمة والممارسات الإدارية المستخدمة لرعاية وتوظيف العمال المهاجرين في لبنان، ومعظمهم من النساء من البلدان الأفريقية والآسيوية ويعملن في منازل خاصة. إن عاملات المنازل مستبعَدات من قانون العمل اللبناني ويفتقرن إلى تدابير الحماية الأساسية. ونظام "كفالة" يحمي المستغلين ويحرم عاملات المنازل من حقوق الإنسان الأساسية. وهذه الدرجة العالية من القبضة على حقوق العاملات التي يوفرها نظام "كفالة" أدّت إلى حالات العبودية الحديثة والاتجار بالبشر والاستغلال.
