Lebanese Canadian Couple Decides to Pay Eskedar Back After Stealing From Her
The employers stole their worker's money after she quit from being overworked but returned it when faced with the possibility of being exposed on social media.

THE STORY
Eskedar thought she was lucky to get a job working for a Lebanese Canadian family who were visiting Lebanon for the summer of 2021. She is sometimes anxious about taking her gold watches, rings and cash with her to a new employer but thought she would be safe with this family. She has some lovely, expensive jewelry gifted to her by previous employers from the Gulf.
Eskedar has lived in Lebanon for a few years and works freelance. She agreed to a salary of $450 per month. They took her to a village deep in the south of Lebanon near the Israeli border where they made her work in the gardens as well as the house. She claims they did not give her enough food and she was severely overworked. While contract workers often have to put up with inhumane working conditions, the advantage of being freelance is that you can easily withdraw your labour when the conditions are abusive. After 21 days that is exactly what Eskedar did. Her employers’ reaction shocked her: her ‘madam’ made her undress down to her underwear and then went through her personal belongings. Finding the rings and watches, she took them, along with $1910 in cash. When her husband came home he convinced his wife to return the jewelry. He returned $300 to Eskedar but kept the rest of her money. She was then thrown out onto the street.
She called a taxi driver whom she knew in Beirut and he drove the long distance to the south to pick her up. Once in Beirut, she went to the Canadian embassy but was not permitted to enter. They did, however, give her an email address and with help she lodged a complaint. She also went to a UN centre but they were unable to help. Finally, distraught, she contacted This Is Lebanon. We phoned her employers.
Initially, it did not go well. In follow-up texts, her employer said Eskedar’s claims were all lies.
“She is a thief and I am glad we discovered her lies before things got worse. Did she tell you about the ring she stole?”
He maintained that she had been paid in full for the time she worked and accused This Is Lebanon of being blackmailers. We advised him that he had left us with no option but to post the video she had made and forward it to Lebanese people living in Canada. We would leave the public to decide who the liar was.
We were surprised to hear from Eskedar the following day, informing us that her employer himself had arrived in Beirut to return her $1610 plus the $300 salary they owed her. He even included a bonus! She was enormously grateful and relieved.

اتصلت بسائق سيارة أجرة تعرفه في بيروت، فقطع مسافة طويلة إلى الجنوب ليأخذها. بمجرد وصولها إلى بيروت، ذهبت إلى السفارة الكندية لكن لم يُسمح لها بالدخول. ومع ذلك، فقد أعطوها عنوان بريد إلكتروني وببعض المساعدة استطاعت تقديم شكوى. كما ذهبت أيضاً إلى مركز تابع للأمم المتحدة لكنهم لم يتمكنوا من المساعدة. أخيراً اتصلت بجمعية "هذا لبنان" وهي مذهولة. فاتصلنا بأصحاب العمل.
في البداية، لم تسِر الأمور على ما يرام. في رسائل نصية لاحقة، قال صاحب العمل بأن ادعاءات إسكيدار كلها أكاذيب.
"إنها لصة وأنا سعيد لأننا اكتشفنا أكاذيبها قبل أن تزداد الأمور سوءاً. هل أخبرتكِ عن الخاتم الذي سرقته؟"
وأكد أنها قد حصلت على أجرها بالكامل مقابل الفترة الذي عملت فيها واتهم "هذا لبنان" بالابتزاز. أعلمناه بأنه لم يترك لنا خياراً آخر سوى نشر الفيديو الذي سجلَتْه وتوجيهه إلى اللبنانيين الذين يعيشون في كندا. وسنترك الناس يقررون من هو الكاذب.
فوجئنا بسماع إسكيدار في اليوم التالي تبلغنا بأن صاحب العمل نفسه قد وصل إلى بيروت ليعيد لها 1610 دولارات بالإضافة إلى راتبها المستحَق لها ومقداره 300 دولار. حتى أنه تضمن مكافأة! كانت في غاية الامتنان والارتياح.
