Amida Receives $4,300 of her Unpaid Salary
After five years of broken promises and unpaid wages amid Lebanon’s crises, Togolese domestic worker Amida Kondo finally secured a partial settlement and her return home.

THE STORY
For more than five years, Amida Kondo, a Togolese domestic worker, dedicated herself to the household that employed her in Nabatieh, Lebanon. She worked in the midst of political unrest, economic collapse, and war—trusting repeated promises that her wages would eventually be paid. But as the years passed, the pattern of unpaid salaries and broken commitments pushed her patience to its limits.
Amida first arrived in Lebanon in January 2019 with an agreed monthly salary of $200. She worked diligently, yet her wages were often delayed for months at a time. By February 2024, when she returned briefly to Togo, she was owed $7,400 in unpaid salary. Her employers persuaded her to return to Lebanon in April 2024, promising to settle the outstanding debt and raise her salary to $250 once conditions improved. Despite these assurances, the delays continued.
Her repeated requests for her earnings were met with excuses linked to Lebanon’s spiraling economic crisis, political instability, and the ongoing war.
In October 2024, at the urging of an African community leader, This Is Lebanon intervened on Amida’s behalf. At that point, she was owed $5,600, and her employers were displaced and sheltering from Israeli bombardment in Nabatieh. After negotiations, an agreement was reached: they would pay Amida $1,500 immediately and cover her airfare back to Togo, followed by $2,800 to be paid in monthly installments over 12 months.
Although the negotiated amount was less than the full sum owed, Amida accepted the terms given the circumstances. By December 2025, her employers fulfilled the final installment. Because they honored the payment plan, their identities are not disclosed in this article.

لأكثر من خمس سنوات، كرّست أميدا كوندو، وهي عاملة منزلية توغولية، نفسها للأسرة التي عملت لديها في النبطية، لبنان. عملت في ظل اضطرابات سياسية وانهيار اقتصادي وحرب، معتمدةً على وعود متكررة بأن أجورها ستُدفع في نهاية المطاف. غير أنّ توالي السنوات، واستمرار نمط عدم دفع الرواتب والإخلال بالالتزامات، دفع بصبرها إلى أقصى حدوده.
وصلت أميدا إلى لبنان للمرة الأولى في كانون الثاني ٢٠١٩ براتب شهري متفق عليه قدره ٢٠٠ دولار. أدّت عملها بجدّ، إلا أنّ أجورها كانت تتأخر غالبًا لأشهر متتالية. وبحلول شباط ٢٠٢٤ وعند عودتها المؤقتة إلى توغو، كانت مستحقاتها غير المدفوعة قد بلغت ٧٤٠٠ دولار. أقنعها أصحاب العمل بالعودة إلى لبنان في نيسان ٢٠٢٤ واعدين بتسديد المبلغ المتراكم ورفع راتبها إلى ٢٥٠ دولارًا فور تحسّن الظروف. إلا أنّ هذه الوعود لم تُنفّذ، واستمرت التأخيرات.
وقوبلت مطالبها المتكررة بالحصول على أجورها بأعذار مرتبطة بتفاقم الأزمة الاقتصادية في لبنان، وعدم الاستقرار السياسي، واستمرار الحرب.
في تشرين الأول ٢٠٢٤ وبناءً على تدخل أحد قادة الجالية الأفريقية، تدخّل فريق منظمة "هذا لبنان" لمناصرة أميدا. في ذلك الوقت، كانت مستحقاتها تبلغ ٥٦٠٠ دولار، وكان أصحاب العمل قد نزحوا ويقيمون في مأوى هربًا من القصف الإسرائيلي على النبطية. وبعد مفاوضات، تم التوصل إلى اتفاق يقضي بدفع ١٥٠٠ دولار فورًا، وتأمين تذكرة سفرها إلى توغو، على أن يُسدَّد مبلغ ٢٨٠٠ دولار المتبقي على أقساط شهرية تمتد على ١٢ شهرًا.
ورغم أنّ المبلغ المتفق عليه كان أقل من كامل المستحقات، قبلت أميدا بالشروط نظرًا للظروف القائمة. وبحلول كانون الأول ٢٠٢٥ أوفى أصحاب العمل بسداد الدفعة الأخيرة. وبما أنهم التزموا بخطة الدفع المتفق عليها، فقد تقرر عدم الكشف عن هوياتهم في هذا المقال.
