Nakhle Gabriel, Agent, Forces Workers to Perform Oral Sex
Multiple victims of sexual abuse by Nakhle Gabriel, owner of Gabriel Services recruitment agency, have come forward with strikingly similar testimonies. From stolen salaries to physical abuse and coerced sexual acts, survivors like Mercy, Grace, Elizabeth, Sylvie, and others expose a pattern of exploitation at Gabriel Services.

THE STORY
There are multiple victims of sexual abuse by Nakhle Gabriel, owner of Gabriel Services recruitment agency. This Is Lebanon has been contacted by several domestic workers - none of whom knew of the others’ complaints. They are from different countries and contacted us over a period of years but their stories are strikingly similar in detail.
We will start with the testimony of Mercy from Kenya who was 25 years old when she arrived in Lebanon. Mercy wanted us to use her real name and didn’t want her face blurred but we decided to omit her surname; she said this is Nakhle's shame, not hers. Mercy worked for her first employer, an elderly woman who spoke no English, for one month. Due to communication difficulties, Mercy asked to return to Nakhle's agency. Her employer gave her salary to Nakhle who stole it.
Mercy reported that on her arrival back at the agency, Elham Lteif, Nakhle’s wife, took to her with a piece of black pipe, beating her all over her body. Other workers also reported that Elham physically abused them.
One wrote, “the abusive wife beat me up until my nose bled.” Another wrote, “When I went to the office the office beat me and told me to go back to work…other girls were watching crying.”
Testimonies collected by TIL indicate that Elham physically abused the workers if they reported problems and requested to change employers. Her abuse seems to have served as a deterrent with some women choosing to stay in a less than ideal employment situation over being returned to the agent's office.
One worker wrote, "The wife (Elham) told me that she will come for me to my employer’s house and beat me. She said she will spoil my passport so that I can't go back home and she will also call the police to arrest me and put me in jail. That's why I had to run away because I knew if I go back to their office I will be taken to their house and get the beating. I know of two girls who were taken to their (agent’s) house and mistreated."
Salary theft and physical abuse were not the worst things domestic workers had to contend with at Gabriel Services. According to multiple sources, Nakhle makes workers perform oral sex on him. Elizabeth* wrote, “One day I was alone in the office. Nakhle called me downstairs to make tea in the kitchen then he locked the door, started kissing me and told me to touch his private parts.”
Mercy said, “He will tell you to go downstairs and make tea so that you lick his dick.” She reported that refusal meant a diet of bread and salty water and also physical abuse.
She said that she was forced to perform oral sex on Nakhle who “released the sperms in my mouth.”
Sylvie* reported that after she refused to work for a lesser salary than what was written in her contract, Nakhle slapped her then left her in the office for a few days. He later approached her and asked to 'fuck her'. She refused, but he insisted. Because she was on her period he forced her to have oral sex.
Grace, in her forties, said that there was no access to WiFi in the office and all workers' phones were confiscated because Nakhle and Elham do not want workers to communicate with the outside world. She said Nakhle told her she was a sexy woman who was HIV negative and he wanted to have sex with her. Grace described herself as a very tough woman and said despite Nakhle's unwanted physical advances, she was able to fend him off but said young workers alone in the office were very unsafe. She later ran away from an abusive employer, afraid to return to the office after Elham had stolen her 3 months’ salary and warned her of ‘severe beatings’.
The only positive part of this story is Nakhle’s daughter, Lea, who Mercy said treated her kindly by giving her food and opening the door for her to go outside and get some sun.
Mercy, Grace, Elizabeth, Sylvie…and others. Unknown to each other. All with similar testimonies about Gabriel Services, a member of SORAL (the Syndicate of Owners of Recruitment Agencies in Lebanon) and a registered agency operating under a licence issued by the Ministry of Labour.
This Is Lebanon advises anyone considering employing a domestic worker to avoid Gabriel Services. Both domestic workers and employers are the losers when an agent is abusive - the worker, feeling that she has no one to turn to in a time of need, may leave her employer’s house and end up homeless and undocumented. The employer loses the services of a worker she has paid large recruitment fees to employ.

Kafala (the Arabic word for sponsorship) refers to the set of regulations and administrative practices used to sponsor and employ migrant workers in Lebanon, mostly women from African and Asian countries working for private households. Domestic workers are excluded from Lebanese labor law and lack basic protections. The kafala system protects abusers and denies domestic workers of basic human rights. The high degree of control over workers’ rights provided by the kafala system has led to cases of modern slavery, human trafficking, and exploitation.

هناك عدة ضحايا للاعتداء الجنسي على يد نخلةغ بريال، مالك وكالة غبريال سيرفيسز. تواصلت العديد من العاملات المنزليات مع جمعية "هذا لبنان" - لا تعرف أيٌّ منهن عن شكاوى الأخريات. إنهن من بلدان مختلفة وتواصلن معنا على مدى سنوات، لكن قصصهن متشابهة بشكل ملحوظ في التفاصيل.
سنبدأ بشهادة ميرسي من كينيا التي كانت في سن ال ٢٥ عندما وصلت إلى لبنان. أرادت ميرسي أن نستخدم اسمها الحقيقي ولم ترغب في إخفاء وجهها، ولكننا قررنا حذف اسم عائلتها؛ قائلة عار على نخلة، ليس عليها. عملت ميرسي عند صاحبة العمل الأولى، و هي امرأة مسنة لا تتحدث الإنجليزية، لمدة شهر. بسبب صعوبات التواصل، طلبت ميرسي العودة إلى وكالة غبريال. أعطت صاحبة العمل راتبها لنخلة الذي سرقه.
أفادت ميرسي بأنه عند عودتها إلى الوكالة، ضربتها إلهام لطيف، زوجة نخلة، بأنبوب أسود، مُعَنِّفَة إياها في جميع أنحاء جسدها. ذكرت عاملات أخريات أيضا أن إلهام قامت بضربهن. كتبت إحداهن:
"ضربتني الزوجة العنيفة حتى نزف أنفي". وكتبت أخرى: "عندما ذهبت إلى المكتب، ضربوني وقالوا لي أن أعود إلى العمل... كانت الفتيات الأخريات يشاهدنني ويبكين".
الشهادات التي تم جمعها من قبل جمعية "هذا لبنان" تشير إلى أن إلهام كانت تسيء معاملة العاملات جسديًا إذا قمن بالإبلاغ عن مشاكل وطلبن تغيير أماكن عملهن. يبدو أن إساءتها قد خدمت كوسيلة ردع، حيث اختارت بعض النساء البقاء في وضع توظيف غير مثالي بدلاً من العودة إلى مكتب الوكيل.
كتبت إحدى العاملات: "قالت لي الزوجة (إلهام) إنها ستأتي لتضربني في منزل صاحب العمل. قالت إنها ستفسد جواز سفري بحيث لا أستطيع العودة إلى الوطن، وأنها ستدعو الشرطة لتعتقلني وتضعني في السجن. هذا هو السبب في أنني اضطررت للهروب، لأنني كنت أعلم إذا عدت إلى مكتبهم سيأخذوني إلى منزلهم وسأتعرض للضرب. أعرف فتاتين تم أخذهما إلى منزلهما وتعرضتا للمعاملة السيئة".
لم تكن سرقة الرواتب والاعتداء الجسدي أسوأ ما تعاني منه العاملات المنزليات في غبريال سيرفيسز. وفقاً لمصادر متعددة، يجبر نخلة العاملات على ممارسة الجنس الفموي. كتبت إليزابيث:
"في يوم من الأيام كنت وحيدة في المكتب. طلب مني نخلة النزول إلى الطابق السفلي لتحضير الشاي في المطبخ ثم قفل الباب، وبدأ في تقبيلي وطلب مني لمس أعضاءه الخاصة".
قالت ميرسي: "سيقول لك أن تذهبي للطابق السفلي وتحضري الشاي حتى تلحسي أعضاءه الخاصة ". وأفادت بأن الرفض يعني حمية من الخبز والماء المالح وأيضاً الضرب. قالت إنها اضطررت إلى تقديم الجنس الفموي لنخلة غبريال الذي "أطلق المني في فمي".
أفادت سيلفيا* بأنه بعد رفضها العمل براتب أقل مما هو مكتوب في عقدها، صفعها غابريال ثم تركها في المكتب لعدة أيام. فيما بعد، اقترب منها وطلب أن يمارس "الجنس" معها. رفضت، ولكنه أصر. بسبب وجودها في فترة الحيض، اضطرها إلى ممارسة الجنسي الفموي.
قالت غريس، في أربعينياتها، إنه لا يوجد إتصال بالإنترنت في المكتب، وتم حجز هواتف جميع العاملات لأن نخلة وإلهام لا يريدان للعاملات التواصل مع العالم الخارجي. قالت إن نخلة قال لها إنها امرأة جذابة ولا تحمل فيروس الإيدز وأراد أن يمارس الجنس معها. وصفت غريس نفسها بأنها امرأة قوية جداً، وقالت إنه رغم تحرش غابريال الذي لا ترغب فيه، إلا أنها استطاعت صده، ولكنها قالت إن العاملات الشابات وحيدات في المكتب غير آمنات أبداً. هربت لاحقاً من صاحب عمل معنف، و خافت من العودة إلى المكتب بعدما سرقت إلهام راتبها لمدة 3 أشهر وحذرتها من "ضرب قاسي".
إن الجزء الوحيد الإيجابي في هذه القصة هو ابنة نخلة، ليا، التي قالت ميرسي إنها عاملتها بلطف من خلال تقديم الطعام لها وفتح الباب لها للخروج والتمتع ببعض أشعة الشمس. لا تعرف ميرسي، غريس، إليزابيث، سيلفي... وغيرهن بعضهن البعض. لدى جميعهن شهادات متشابهة حول مكتب غبريال سيرفيسز، الذي هو عضو في SORAL (نقابة أصحاب وكالات التوظيف في لبنان)، ووكالة مسجلة تعمل بترخيص صادر عن وزارة العمل. تنصح جمعية "هذا لبنان" أي شخص يفكر في توظيف عاملة منزلية بتجنب غبريال سيرفيسز. فكل من العاملات المنزليات وأصحاب العمل خاسرون عندما يكون الوكيل معنفاً - عندما تشعر العاملة بأنه ليس لديها أحد تتحدث إليه في وقت الحاجة، قد تترك منزل صاحب العمل وتجد نفسها بلا مأوى وبدون وثائق. و يخسر صاحب العمل خدمات عاملة دفع لها رسوم توظيف باهظة.
