Watch the Haddads promise to pay Grace her unpaid salary of more than a year.
THE STORY
“Do you really think we’d steal these girls' money when they come from the ends of the earth to work for us?” This is the question asked by Nadim Haddad to This Is Lebanon on a call inquiring about her salary. Unfortunately, he answered his own question and the answer was “yes.”
Grace Afriyie, a Ghanaian, was 22 when she arrived in Lebanon on 3 September, 2019. Her Lebanese agent, Elie Abou Chaaya, owns a company called Perfect Choice which hires out wedding cars. Five years ago he purchased a 2015 Maserati Ghibli. Elie stole the salary paid by Grace’s first employer where she worked for a month. He then delivered Grace to his brother where she worked without payment for another month. He still owes her 2 months’ salary.
4 Nov 2019 Elie placed Grace with his close friend, Nadim Haddad, and his wife Abir, in Bouchrieh.
4 Dec 2020 Grace first contacted This Is Lebanon, at which time she had been working for the Haddads for 13 months. Her sole remuneration up to that point was a phone worth $165 and 4 pairs of shoes worth a total of 300,000 LL. She was owed almost a year’s salary. She wrote, “Nadim told me not to worry about the money. He said he will give me when going back to my country.” She felt confident he would keep his promise as, “He deals with cars like Lamborghini.” She also saw that he traveled regularly to Dubai and assumed he had money. We urged Grace not to be so trusting and to ask for her salary.
18 Jan 2021 This Is Lebanon spoke with Abir Haddad who admitted to the non-payment but said that Grace was happy and wasn’t asking for her money. She reassured us there was nothing to worry about and Grace would get paid, that even if the sum reached $5,000 they had no problem paying. She told us Grace had bought shoes and a phone from her salary and we were making a big deal out of nothing.
12 Feb 2021 Grace contacted This Is Lebanon in a state of distress. Her mother had fallen very ill and been rushed to the hospital. When she asked the Haddads to send money to her family, they ignored her pleas. This Is Lebanon called Nadim Haddad. It was a heated call. Like his wife, Nadim admitted to the non-payment but he had a different excuse. He said they had been employing domestic workers for years and always held on to their salaries, giving it to them at the end of the contract. He explained that he didn’t want Grace’s family to spend all her money so was saving it for her.
15 Mar 2021 This Is Lebanon called Elie Abou Chaaya, Grace’s agent and Nadim’s close friend, requesting he intervene and pointing out that Nadim makes fresh money and had no excuse not to pay. Elie asserted that Nadim would definitely pay and told us to ‘stop poking around’.
27 April 2021 Nadim asked This Is Lebanon if we would accept him paying Grace by cheque. We told him that was not the solution and requested he send Grace home immediately and agree on a financial plan to pay off his debt to her. He said,
“How can I let her leave without her money?”
At this point, Nadim should have sent her home so his debt did not accumulate further. He neither sent her home nor paid her.
1 May 2021 Grace told us that she wanted to finish her contract and would wait till September when he would owe her $4,600. We cautioned her to record conversations with Nadim and to get him to sign an agreement to pay (see photo of the agreement).
17 Aug 2021 This Is Lebanon called Nadim who said “of course she will get paid” then said he was busy and hung up.
12 Sept 2021 Grace told us that Nadim was doing her papers for her to be able to travel home.
20 Sept 2021 This Is Lebanon once again called Nadim who said, “Why are you worried? I have agreed with Grace to pay her before she leaves.” When we asked when she would be leaving, he said in about 2 weeks when her papers were done. He said he would give Grace the money and not transfer it to her family as he was worried she would return home and find her family had spent it. Grace’s response?: “Nooo, I want the money to be sent to my family and it’s not his business if my family spend it or not. I have been patient enough. I can’t take it anymore.”
22 Sept 2021 Grace recorded Nadim saying that he couldn’t send all her money at once but he would give her one year’s worth of salary to send to her family via Western Union under her name.
29 Sept 2021 Nadim paid Grace $1,000 in cash (5 months salary instead of the promised 12 months)
25 Oct 2021 This Is Lebanon called Nadim who grew very upset saying that he was her sponsor and he was responsible for her, not us. We asked him to fulfill those responsibilities and pay her. He then screamed that she would be leaving in two days and of course she wouldn’t be leaving without her money. He then hung up.
29 Oct 2021 Grace is paid a further $600. She is still owed 14 months salary i.e. $2,800.
30 Oct 2021 Grace flew back to Ghana. Without the $2,800 she was owed.
Since arriving back home, Grace has asked for her unpaid salary several times. Nadim has continued to make excuses and has not paid her.
This Is Lebanon have tried to negotiate with Nadim and Abir since 2020 without any success. A lawyer called Nadim who denied owing Grace any salary but said he had no receipts.
Nadim bought a Harley Davidson Electra in 2020 and also has 3 cars registered under his name: a Bentley Arnage purchased in 2018, a Bentley Flying Spur purchased in 2016 and a Lambo Murcielago purchased in 2014.
Would he and his wife “steal the salary of a girl who had come from the ends of the earth” to serve them? Yes, indeed.
