Mohamad Omari of Las Perlas Resort Keeps Regina in Forced Labour
Mohamad Omari and Hasna Said Haddid, from Tripoli, are owners of Las Perlas Resort. Regina alleges that she suffered physical abuse while working for them and that Mohamad tore up her passport and owes her 9.5 months salary.

THE STORY
Regina Asumang, a 23-year-old Ghanaian, arrived in Lebanon on 15 April, 2019, to work as a domestic worker. She stayed for 3 months with her first employer but was given no time to rest and not enough time to sleep at night and therefore asked to be returned to the agency since she was still within the 3 month trial period. Her next employers were Mohamad Omari and Hasna Said Haddid, owners of Las Perlas Resort in Tripoli. Regina cleaned not only the Ammars’ house but the resort as well. Her monthly salary was supposed to be $200.
When Regina contacted This Is Lebanon in July 2020 she was owed 9 months’ salary. Regina was desperate to join the repatriation flights organized by the Ghanaian consulate at the time. She was prepared to forfeit her salary in order to escape the slavery conditions she had found herself in, saying
“He beat me for things like I didn’t iron the sheets. This man is misbehaving. I don’t want my salary. I just want to go.”
On the 27th July Regina escaped and went to the Ghanian consulate. She was repatriated to Ghana on 11th August, 2020. Albeit, without her salary.
This is Lebanon began negotiations on her behalf in October 2020 when we contacted her former employer Mohamad.
However, after several attempts to contact the employer and his brother, a co-owner of the resort, negotiations failed to achieve any positive result for Regina. TIL’s investigation has shown that Mohamed had a history of non-payment of bills predating the crisis. Employers should not be permitted to hire domestic workers in such circumstances.
Nine months after returning home, Regina wrote:
“Am still jobless. It has been hard for me. Am also a single parent. I just wash for people to survive with my daughter.”
Regina left her 3 year old in someone else’s care and returned home 15 months later without her hard earned wages.
Migrant domestic workers under the Kafala system endure all kinds of abuses. Once home, many of them are left with the psychological and physical scars and with little to no pay.

وصلت ريجينا أسومانغ، البالغة من العمر 23 عاماً، أصلها من غانا، إلى لبنان في 15 نيسان 2019، للعمل في الخدمة المنزلية. مكثت مدة ثلاثة أشهر مع صاحب العمل الأول، لكنها لم تُمنح فترات للراحة أو وقتاً كافياً للنوم ليلاً، لذا طلبت إعادتها إلى المكتب إذ كانت لا تزال في فترة التجربة التي مدتها ثلاثة أشهر. لم تكن تعلم أنها كانت ذاهبة لتعيش حالة أسوأ بكثير. وكان أصحاب العمل التاليين محمد وحسناء عمار في طرابلس، يمتلكان منتجع " لِه بيرلا".
ولم تكن ريجينا تنظف منزل عمار فقط، إنما المنتجع أيضاً. كان من المفترض أن يكون راتبها الشهري 200 دولار. عندما اتصلت ريجينا بجمعية "هذا لبنان" في تموز 2020، كانوا يدينون لها برواتب تسعة أشهر. وكانت ريجينا بأمسّ الحاجة لتلحق برحلات العودة إلى الوطن التي نظمتها قنصلية غانا. حتى أنها كانت مستعدة للتنازل عن راتبها مقابل النجاة من العبودية التي وجدت نفسها فيها، قائلة
"لقد ضربني من أجل أمور مثل عدم قيامي بكيّ الملاءات. إن هذا الرجل يسيء التصرف. لا أريد راتبي. أريد الرحيل وحسب".
في 27 تموز، هربت ريجينا وذهبت إلى قنصلية غانا. حققت رغبتها وعادت إلى ديارها في 11 آب.
ازداد انشغال متابعي القضايا لدينا وهم يحاولون مساعدة العاملات المتضررات من انفجار بيروت ولكن في 4 تشرين الأول 2020 بعثنا رسالة نصية إلى محمد: "مرحباً محمد. لقد اتصلت بنا ريجينا أسومانغ تقول بأنها تعرضت للتعنيف الجسدي أثناء العمل لديك، وقد قمتَ بتمزيق جواز سفرها، وأنك مدين لها برواتب غير مدفوعة لمدة تسعة أشهر. إن هذا الفيديو غير منشور حالياً: (الرابط مضمن). نود أن نسمع القصة من جانبك. وشكراً لك".
في 12 تشرين الأول 2020: "مرحباً محمد، أنت لم تردّ على رسائلنا، لذا فقد نشرنا هذا الفيديو. وما زالت لديك الفرصة لتخبرنا القصة من جانبك والتعويض عن الراتب غير المدفوع. إن كنت لم تزل مصرّاً على عدم الردّ، فلن يكون لدينا خيار سوى المتابعة ونشر القصة في صفحتنا على فيسبوك. إن الكرة في ملعبك الآن."
بعد تسعة أشهر من عودتها إلى الوطن، كتبت ريجينا:
"ما زلت عاطلة عن العمل. لقد كان ذلك صعباً بالنسبة لي. كما أنني أم عازبة. أعمل بغسل الملابس كي أعيش أنا وابنتي".
قد تركت ريجينا ابنتها وهي في الثالثة من عمرها في رعاية امرأة أخرى وعادت إلى بلدها بعد 15 شهراً مفلسة.
