THE STORY
Sarah Blanco, a worker from the Philippines, was employed by Nader Sarkis, a Lebanese socialite whose family owns high-end fashion company Dolce Farfalla. She worked for Sarkis from 8 January, 2019 to 25 September, 2019. She alleges that he regularly beat her up, and on one occasion locked her into her room and deprived her of food and water.
On one such occasion, says Sarah, Sarkis watched the CCTV footage of his apartment and saw that Sarah had smacked his dog on the leg after it urinated on the floor. She says that she did so as part of the dog’s training, so it would learn not to urinate in the house. Outraged, Nader returned home and beat Sarah, causing bruising on her arm. She alleges that he smashed her head into the wall and twisted her neck; she was afraid that he had caused her a long-term injury. He then proceeded to lock her up and deprived her of food and water.
“He hits me so much. Sometimes he tells me he’ll kill me. I’m so afraid of him. I don’t want to work here anymore. But how to run away? I can’t. I’m afraid of that also. Please help me.” - Sara in an audio message to This Is Lebanon
Sarah said it wasn’t the first time he had hit her. In May 2019, he had also given her a severe beating. On 25 September, 2019, This Is Lebanon received a video of Sarah pleading to be rescued. We contacted the agency who supplies the Sarkis family with domestic workers. The agent said that the family had called the day before and said that they had caught Sarah stealing. The Sarkis’ told the agent that they had found that Sarah had two phones and was hiding secrets in her second phone, but refusing to hand the phone over.
When the agent suggested the Sarkis’ bring Sarah into the office so a mutually acceptable solution could be found, they declined and said they’d handle the problem their way. It is extremely common to accuse a domestic worker of theft to cover up abuse.
The agent called Nader and managed to convince him to send Sarah to the embassy. After the agent spoke to him, Sarah says that he came home, gave her one final beating, and sent her off to the Embassy of the Philippines with his driver on 25 September, 2019.

سارة بلانكو، و هي عاملة من الفلبين، كانت تعمل لدى نادر سركيس، وهو شاب لبناني مرموق تملك عائلته شركة الأزياء الراقية دولتشي فارفالا. عملت سارة عند عائلة سركيس في الفترة من 8 يناير 2019 إلى 25 سبتمبر 2019. وهي تدعي أنه كان يضربها بانتظام، وفي إحدى المناسبات حبسها في غرفتها وحرمها من الطعام والماء.
تقول سارة ذات مرة شاهد سركيس لقطات كاميرات المراقبة لشقته، ورأى أن سارة قد ضربت كلبه على ساقه بعد أن تبول على الأرض. وهي تقول إنها فعلت ذلك كجزء من تدريب الكلب ليتعلم عدم التبول في المنزل، عاد نادر غاضباً إلى المنزل وضرب سارة، مما سبب كدمات على ذراعها. تدعي أنه ضرب رأسها في الحائط ولوى رقبتها؛ كانت تخشى أنه تسبب لها في إصابة دائمة. ثم تابع فحبسها وحرمها من الطعام والماء.
قالت سارة إنها ليست المرة الأولى التي يضربها فيها. في مايو 2019 ضربها ضرباً مبرحاً. في رسالة صوتية إلى "هذا لبنان" ، تقول: "إنه يضربني كثيراً. في بعض الأحيان يقول لي أنه سيقتلني. أنا خائفة جداً منه. لا أريد العمل هنا بعد الآن. لكن كيف الهرب؟ لا استطيع أنا خائفة من ذلك أيضاً. أرجوكم ساعدوني."
في 25 سبتمبر 2019، استلم "هذا لبنان" تسجيل فيديو لسارة تناشد إنقاذها. اتصلنا بالوكالة التي تزود عائلة سركيس بعاملات المنازل. قال الوكيل إن العائلة اتصلت في اليوم السابق وقالت إنها أمسكوا سارة تسرق. وقالت عائلة سركيس للوكيل إنهم وجدوا أن سارة لديها هاتفان وتخفي أسرارها في هاتفها الثاني، لكنها ترفض تسليم الهاتف.
عندما اقترح الوكيل على عائلة سركيس إحضار سارة إلى المكتب حتى يتمكنوا إيجاد حل مقبول للطرفين ، رفضوا وقالوا إنهم سوف يعالجون المشكلة على طريقتهم. من الشائع للغاية اتهام عاملة منزلية بالسرقة للتستر على سوء المعاملة.
اتصل الوكيل ب نادر وتمكن من إقناعه بإرسال سارة إلى السفارة. تقول سارة إنه بعد أن كلمه الوكيل عاد إلى المنزل و ضربها مرة أخيرة، وأرسلها إلى سفارة الفلبين مع سائقه في 25 سبتمبر ، 2019.
سافرت سارة إلى الفلبين في 18 أكتوبر 2019.
