Christabel Escapes With Her Full Salary, 6 Months of Her Life
Chris contacted TIL because she hadn't been paid for 6 mths. Her madam said she was withholding her salary "in case she escapes". One call from TIL got her paid .

THE STORY
Christabel Ayaaba, a 24 year old Ghanaian national, arrived in Lebanon on 10 December, 2018. She contacted This Is Lebanon on 30 January, 2020 asking for help in obtaining her salary. She had not been paid for 6 months and whenever her parents called her employer, she would not answer the calls.
We contacted her employer to ask about the unpaid salary and she replied that she was “withholding it in case Christabel escapes.” We pointed out that this was illegal and the Ministry of Labour required that she be paid in full at the end of every month. Shortly after we contacted her, she paid Christabel $1,200 in cash and sent her home.
Christabel was lucky to leave Lebanon just before the airport closed and the lockdown was imposed. Christabel did, indeed, escape! Because the employer complied with our request, we are not revealing her name.

وصلت كريستابيل أيابا، وهي مواطنة من غانا تبلغ من العمر 24 عاماً، إلى لبنان في 10 كانون الأول 2018. وقد اتصلت بـ "هذا لبنان" في 30 كانون الثاني 2020، طالبة المساعدة في الحصول على راتبها. لم يتم دفع أجرها لمدة 6 أشهر، وكلما اتصل والداها بصاحبة العمل، لم تكن ترد على المكالمات.
اتصلنا بصاحبة العمل لنسأل عن الراتب غير المدفوع فأجابت بأنها «تحتجزه لديها في حال هروب كريستابل». أشرنا إلى أن ذلك مخالف للقانون، وأن وزارة العمل تشترط بأن يتم دفع الراتب بالكامل في نهاية كل شهر. بعد وقت قصير من اتصالنا بها، دفعت لكريستابيل 1200 دولار نقداً وأعادتها إلى بلدها.
كانت كريستابل محظوظة لمغادرة لبنان قبل إغلاق المطار وفرض الحجر. لقد نجت كريستابيل بالفعل !ولأن صاحبة العمل استجات لطلبنا، لن نكشف عن اسمها.
