Joudy is a recruitment agent. She put Gifty with over 15 employers, beat her, and stole her salary. All in a day's work for a Lebanese recruitment agency.

THE STORY
Gifty Asante, 25, Ghanaian, describes her life in Lebanon as “a slavery life”. It is widely documented that many recruitment agents in Lebanon are physically abusive people-traffickers who do not care about domestic workers’ rights and welfare. Joudy Abou Sabha, owner of ‘Joudy Services’, is such an agent.
Gifty arrived in Lebanon on 13 August 2019. She left exactly one year later. For the first 10 months, her agent Joudy moved her from employer to employer, house to house. Gifty alleges that she worked in about 15 houses. When we asked her why Joudy kept moving her she said that she didn’t know why - Joudy would call the employer to return her and back to the office she would go. She described how she was often subjected to physical abuse at the office: “She [Joudy] beat and step into my stomach, spit on my face, strike scissors on me.” Joudy continued to move Gifty around from household to household until she fell sick. Joudy refused to get her medical treatment, instead throwing her out of the office without her passport or personal possessions. This was when Gifty contacted This Is Lebanon:
“Please am really suffering since the agent beat me severely. All my body pains. No money to buy even medicine.”
This is Lebanon contacted Joudy on the 19th July 2020: “Hi Joudy, we are This Is Lebanon. We have been contacted by Gifty Asante from Ghana who alleges that you put her to work in 15 different houses over a period of 10 months and only paid her $800. And that you threw her out of the office when she got sick. We would like to hear your side of the story. There is a flight to Ghana on the 28th which costs $500. Are you prepared to pay for her evacuation? Thank you.” Joudy saw the message but did not respond.
We were able to refer Gifty for medical treatment and supply her with emergency food relief and shelter. After two months of waiting, she was repatriated by the consulate. When she got home, her brother contacted Joudy asking for Gifty’s bags to be taken to the consulate. Joudy blocked him.
