THE STORY
There is no need to go into all the details of Dami’s suffering in Lebanon; her secret recording of the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of Hassan Dergham suffices. She worked for him from November 2019 until July 2020. The Dergham’s apartment was on two floors. Dami’s room was on the same floor as Hassan Dergham’s. His wife and children slept on a different floor.
Migrant domestic workers are very vulnerable to sexual abuse. Usually, their passports are illegally confiscated by their employers, they work behind closed doors, their rooms (if they are given their own room) often do not have locks, and they don’t know where to go or who to turn to when the abuse starts.
Fortunately, Dami was able to leave Hassan’s house and find employers who treated her with respect. It has only become possible to tell her story now as she has safely returned to Nigeria. Hassan told Dami,
“No one knows. You no speak.”
We are sharing Dami’s story to raise awareness on the sexual abuse of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon. It is rife. Between 2018 and 2023, This Is Lebanon received 214 cases of sexual abuse. This is the tip of the iceberg. While Dami was brave enough to secretly record Hassan’s abuse, many other women are not able to do so.

This Is Lebanon was established in 2017 with the aim of working towards abolishing the kafala system in Lebanon. Our goal has been to raise awareness about the dangers of the kafala system by exposing the horrific conditions under which migrant domestic workers live and the perpetrators of abuse as well as advocating with and on behalf of migrant domestic workers. Ultimately, This Is Lebanon gives a voice to workers and encourages witnesses of abuse to come forward.
Kafala (the Arabic word for sponsorship) refers to the set of regulations and administrative practices used to sponsor and employ migrant workers in Lebanon, mostly women from African and Asian countries working for private households. Domestic workers are excluded from Lebanese labor law and lack basic protections. The kafala system protects abusers and denies domestic workers of basic human rights. The high degree of control over workers’ rights provided by the kafala system has led to cases of modern slavery, human trafficking, and exploitation.
