THE STORY
Bih Charlotte Ngafor left her two young children behind in Cameroon when she went to work as a domestic worker in Lebanon in February, 2019. She commenced work with her second employers, Maroun and Vivian Daher, in November 2019.
She contacted This Is Lebanon in late April 2020 asking for help as the Dahers had not paid her any salary and Maroun was sexually harassing her. Her monthly salary was $250 and the Dahers owed her $1,250. According to Charlotte, Maroun complained to her that his wife was not having sex with him and he was pressuring Charlotte to fill that gap. She wrote:
“He said that I should take off my dress so he could see my body and he exposed his manhood and asked me to touch it and have sex with him.”
Charlotte expressed concerns for her safety.
It was a difficult time for all domestic workers because of the lockdown and the closure of flights to their home countries. This Is Lebanon received an uptick in sexual abuse cases during this time because many men, who would normally be at work during the day, were inside the house with the domestic workers.
30 April, This Is Lebanon called Maroun about the non-payment. He did not deny it and promised to pay her “2-3 months” the following day. In response, he sent $750 by OMT.
2 May, without mentioning the sexual abuse, Charlotte told Vivian she wanted to be taken to the recruitment office and she recorded Vivian’s conversation with the agent secretly.
Rather telling is Vivian had to ask Charlotte which country she was from although she had lived in the same house with her for 6 months! Vivian referred to Charlotte as a whore and said she was making trouble. In fact, it was Vivian who was causing trouble having slapped Charlotte on two separate occasions.
6 July, concerned that we had not heard from Charlotte in 2 months, we contacted Maroun. His brother answered and informed us that “Charlotte was no good and had stopped working so they had put her at their mother’s house.”
He said they would put her on the first available plane home. We continued to ask the Dahers to send us a copy of the air ticket.
3 August, Charlotte flew home to Cameroon minus her bag, ID or phone. Two and a half months’ salary was still owed to her.
When asked what advice she would give to any woman considering going to Lebanon as a domestic worker, Charlotte replied:
“I would tell her to be very careful because Lebanon is not a good place to be.”

تركت “بيه شارلوت نغافور” طفليها الصغيرين في الكاميرون، وسافرت في شباط 2019 لتعمل كعاملة منزل في لبنان. وبدأت العمل لدى أصحاب العمل التاليين، مارون وفيفيان ضاهر، في تشرين الثاني 2019.
اتصلت بجمعية “هذا لبنان” في أواخر نيسان 2020 تطلب المساعدة لأن عائلة ضاهر لم تدفع لها أي راتب، وكان مارون يتحرش بها جنسياً. كان راتبها الشهري 250 دولار، و آل ضاهر يدينان لها بمبلغ 1250 دولار. وحسب قول شارلوت، اشتكى لها مارون من أن زوجته لم تكن تمارس الجنس معه، وكان يضغط على شارلوت لتملأ له هذا الفراغ. كتبت لنا:
“لقد طلب مني أن أخلع ثوبي لكي يرى جسدي وكشف عن منطقة رجولته وطلب مني أن ألمسه وأمارس الجنس معه”. وكانت شارلوت قلقة على سلامتها.
لقد كان وقتاً عصيباً لكل عاملات المنازل بسبب الإقفال العام وتعليق الرحلات الجوية إلى بلدانهن. وتلقّى “هذا لبنان” حالات أكثر من الاعتداء الجنسي خلال هذه المدة لأن العديد من الرجال، الذين يكونون عادة في العمل أثناء النهار، تواجدوا في البيت مع عاملات المنازل.
في 30 نيسان، اتصل “هذا لبنان” بمارون بخصوص عدم دفع الراتب. فلم ينكر ذلك، و وعد بأن يدفع لها أجور “شهرين أو ثلاثة أشهر” في اليوم التالي. وتنفيذاً لهذا الوعد، أرسل 750 دولار عن طريق OMT.
في 2 أيار، ودون أن تذكر شيئاً عن الاعتداء الجنسي، طلبت شارلوت من فيفيان أن تأخذها إلى مكتب التوظيف، وسجلت محادثة فيفيان مع الوكيل سراً.
يكفي القول بأنه كان على فيفيان أن تسأل شارلوت عن البلد الذي أتت منه رغم أنها عاشت معها في المنزل نفسه مدة 6 أشهر! حتى أن فيفيان أشارت إلى شارلوت بأنها عاهرة، وقالت أنها كانت تثير المتاعب. وفي الواقع، كانت فيفيان هي التي تسبب المشاكل لأنها صفعت شارلوت في موقفين مختلفين.
في 6 تموز، ساورنا القلق لعدم سماعنا أخبار شارلوت لمدة شهرين، فاتصلنا بمارون. ردّ شقيقه وأخبرنا أن “شارلوت لم تكن صالحة، وتوقفت عن العمل لذا أخذوها إلى منزل والدتهم.”
وقال بأنهم سوف يرسلوها على متن أول طائرة متوفرة للعودة إلى ديارها. واصلنا مطالبة آل ضاهر بأن يرسلوا لنا نسخة عن تذكرة الطيران.
في 3 آب، عادت شارلوت إلى الكاميرون بدون حقيبتها أو بطاقة هويتها أو حتى هاتفها. ومازالوا مدينين لها براتب شهرين ونصف.
حين سألنا شارلوت ما النصيحة التي تقدمها لأية امرأة تفكر في الذهاب إلى لبنان كعاملة منزل، أجابت:
“أقول لها بأن تكون حريصة للغاية لأن لبنان ليس مكاناً حسناً للذهاب إليه.”

THE STORY
Esther Agyeiwaa, a 27 year old Ghanaian, contacted This Is Lebanon in May 2020 because her employers had not paid her for 8 months. She wrote,
“They said no dollar and I have a family. I can not work without money.”
This Is Lebanon called the employers who then started to pressure Esther. As a result, she sent a message asking for her case to be dropped. “He told me that if you post on Facebook they will not let me go and am afraid of them so please wait.” Her employers threatened to lodge a false accusation of theft against her with the police – a threat that many employers carry out.
Three weeks later, the employers took her to the consulate. She was repatriated on 9 August without her salary. Once Esther was safely home, we contacted the employers again and sent them a video Esther had made which included their photos. They decided to pay her salary rather than be exposed on social media. It took a few months but eventually Esther received the 6 months salary she was owed.

تواصلت إستِر أغيوا، شابة من غانا تبلغ من العمر 27 عاماً، مع جمعية “هذا لبنان” (TIL) في أيار 2020 لأنه لم يكن أصحاب العمل قد دفعوا لها أجراً لمدة 8 أشهر. كتبت لنا:
“قالوا ليس هناك دولار لكن لدي عائلة. لا أستطيع العمل بدون أجر.”
اتصل “هذا لبنان” بأصحاب العمل الذين بدأوا بعد ذلك بالضغط على إستِر. ونتيجة لذلك، كتبت لنا رسالة تطالب بالوقف عن المضي بقضيتها. “أخبرني أنه إذا نشرتم على فيسبوك، فلن يسمحوا لي بالرحيل وأنا خائفة منهم، لذا أرجوكم أن تنتظروا.” هددها أصحاب العمل بتقديم اتهام كاذب بالسرقة ضدها لدى الشرطة – وهو تهديد ينفذه العديد من أصحاب العمل.
بعد ثلاثة أسابيع، أخذها أصحاب العمل إلى القنصلية. أعيدت إلى وطنها في 9 آب بدون راتبها. وبمجرد أن وصلت إستِر إلى المنزل سالمة، اتصلنا بأصحاب العمل مرة أخرى وأرسلنا لهم مقطع فيديو التقطته إستِر ويتضمن صورهم. فقرروا دفع راتبها بدلاً من الظهور على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي. استغرق الأمر بضعة أشهر ولكن في نهاية المطاف استلمت إستِر راتبها الذي تستحقه عن 6 أشهر. وكانت في غاية الشكر والامتنان.
