THE STORY
Jane* is a 22-year-old Nigerian nursing graduate. Her family sold some of their property to raise the necessary funds for her to work abroad. Jane wrote:
“I didn’t know that I was going to Lebanon to be a maid.”
She thought she was sent on a program to study and practice nursing. A large number of migrants recruited to work in Lebanon are often unaware of the work and the conditions they are signing on to. She arrived in Lebanon in November 2019 around the beginning of the political and economic crisis, unaware that she was about to be trapped by the Kafala system.
Jane was hired by Norma Mostafa to take care of her elderly parents. Although the regulations of the Labour Ministry state that a worker is to work in one house only, Jane cleaned three houses: Norma’s house and those of her parents and sister.
In her testimony to This is Lebanon, Jane told us that she initially thought she would be safe with Norma’s old parents, but she later described them as ‘wicked’. Jane tells us of instances where the wife used to scare her with a knife. She also reported that the old man, Mustafa, who was in his mid 70s, started to sexually harass her. The harassment escalated and ended in an attempted rape. She wrote,
“He almost killed me because he wanted to rape me.”
After physically wrestling with him, she managed to free herself. She was terrified and managed to escape on 20 September 2020. This is Lebanon have reviewed a voice recording of the attempted rape and a picture of Mustafa reaching for Jane’s breasts. On top of the sexual assault, Jane was not regularly paid, and when she ran away they owed her four and half a months’ salary, amounting to $900.
The Nigerian embassy contacted Norma on behalf of Jane, who handed over Jane’s confiscated passport and paid $600 of her salary, but refused to pay for her air ticket.
This Is Lebanon bought Jane’s ticket, and she flew home on 16 October 2020. Jane’s experience in Lebanon was eleven months of fear, exhaustion, and suffering.

جين*، النيجرية الأصل، هي خريجة من كلية التمريض في الثانية والعشرين من عمرها. باعت الأسرة بعض ممتلكاتها لتأمين ما يلزم من المال لها للعمل في الخارج. كتبت جين:
“لم أكن أعلم أنني ذاهبة إلى لبنان لأكون خادمة.”
ظنت أنها أرسلت في برنامج لدراسة التمريض وممارسته. غالبًا ما يكون عدد كبير من المهاجرات اللواتي يتم تجنيدهن للعمل في لبنان غير مدركات للعمل والظروف التي توقعن فيها. وصلت إلى لبنان في تشرين الثاني / نوفمبر 2019 مع بداية الأزمة السياسية والاقتصادية ، غير مدركة أنها على وشك الوقوع في فخ نظام الكفالة.
تم توظيف جين من قبل نورما مصطفى لتعتني بوالديها المسنين. وعلى الرغم من أن لوائح وزارة العمل تنص على أن العاملة يجب أن تعمل في منزل واحد فقط، قامت جين بتنظيف ثلاثة منازل: منزل نورما ومنزل والديها وأختها.

“كاد أن يقتلني لأنه أراد اغتصابي”.
وبعد مصارعته جسدياً، تمكنَت من الإفلات منه. شعرت بالذعر، وتمكنت من الفرار في 20 أيلول 2020. قامت جمعية “هذا لبنان” بمراجعة تسجيلا صوتيا لمحاولة الاغتصاب وصورة لمصطفى وهو يصل إلى ثدي جين. علاوة على الاعتداء الجنسي ، لم تتقاضى جين أجرًا منتظمًا ، وعندما هربت كانوا يدينون لها برواتب أربعة أشهر ونصف الشهر – 900 دولار.
اتصلت السفارة النيجيرية بنورما نيابة عن جين، التي سلمت جواز سفر جين بعد أن كانت قد صادرته منها بشكل غير قانوني ودفعت 600 دولار من راتبها، لكنها رفضت دفع ثمن تذكرة سفرها.
قامت جمعية “هذا لبنان” بشراء تذكرة جين، وسافرت إلى ديارها في 16 تشرين الأول 2020. كانت تجربة جين في لبنان أحد عشر شهراً من الخوف والإجهاد والمعاناة.

THE STORY
In August 2020, Abigael Modupe Adebowale, a 28 year old Nigerian domestic worker in the house of Nicolas and Nada Daoud, Bsalim, contacted This Is Lebanon informing us that her employers had not paid her for 4 months. When she told the Daouds she wanted to leave, they took her to the recruitment agency, Majesty Services in Zalka. Abigael told This is Lebanon that the agent grabbed her by the neck and was hitting her with a wooden stick. She said the agent threatened to kill her if she spoke again about returning to Nigeria. She was then returned to her employers. This is Lebanon has documente hundreds of cases over the years where agents physically abuse workers who request to return home.
Abigael expressed fear of her agent and fear of her employer. She said that Nicolas had physically abused her:
“Even Nicolas has knocked me on my head.”
She was in a difficult position as she claimed that whenever she asked for her salary they told her they couldn’t pay all her money.
On 9 September 2020, This Is Lebanon called Nicolas who informed us that Abigael would be leaving the following day and had been paid in full. Once Abigael was home, she informed us that she was still owed 4 months’ salary. We contacted Nicolas and told him of Abigael’s complaint of non-payment asking him to send pics of the receipts if he disputed her claim.
In his response, he asked This is Lebanon to explain who we are and to provide proof of identity. He claimed that Abigael had been treated as one of his family and claimed again to have paid Abigael her due salary, partly in cash. Although he said he has evidence of payment, he did not produce it. Finally he said, ‘We are not obliged to prove to you. We don’t know who you are.’ He also mentioned that they had paid recruitment costs based on a 2 year contract which she had breached. We pointed out that they, not Abigael, had breached the contract which states that a worker is free to leave if she hasn’t been paid, or has been underpaid, for 3 or more consecutive months.
This Is Lebanon is often told by abusive employers that they treated their domestic worker like a member of the family. The statement in itself is a red flag. Abigael’s response:
“They punished, starved and beat me. They don’t treat me as a family member.”
The Daouds is yet another family that never presented This Is Lebanon with any evidence of payment nor did they pay Abigael her 4 months’ salary.

في آب 2020، اتصلت أبيغايل مودوبي أديبوالي بجمعية “هذا لبنان”، وهي عاملة منزل نيجيرية في منزل نيكولا وندى داود، بصاليم، وتبلغ من العمر 28 عاماً، لتخبرنا أن أصحاب العمل لم يدفعوا لها أجورها منذ 4 أشهر. عندما أخبرت عائلة داود أنها تريد المغادرة، أخذوها إلى وكالة التوظيف Majesty Services في الزلقا. أخبرت أبيغايل جمعية “هذا لبنان” ان الوكيل قام بإمساكها حول عنقها وضربها بعصا خشبية. قالت ان الوكيل هدد بقتلها إذا تحدثت مرة أخرى عن العودة إلى نيجيريا. ثم أعيدت إلى أصحاب العمل. لقد وثقت جمعية “هذا لبنان” مئات الحالات على مر السنين حيث قام الوكلاء بالاعتداء الجسدي على العمال الذين يطلبون العودة إلى ديارهم.
أعربت أبيغايل عن خوفها من وكيلها وخوفها من صاحب العمل. وقالت إن نيكولاس عنّفها جسدياً:
“حتى نيكولاس ضربني على رأسي”
كانت في موقف صعب حيث قالت أنها كلما طلبت راتبها كانوا يقولون لها إنهم لا يستطيعون دفع كل مستحقاتها.
في 9 أيلول 2020، اتصل “هذا لبنان” بنيكولا. وعلم منه أن أبيغايل ستغادر في اليوم التالي وأنها تقاضت أجورها بالكامل. وحال وصول أبيغايل إلى بلدها، اتصلت بنا لتخبرنا أنهم ما زالوا يدينون لها برواتب 4 أشهر. كتبنا رسالة نصية إلى نيكولا وأخبرناه بشكوى أبيغايل بخصوص عدم الدفع، وطلبنا منه إرسال صور الإيصالات إن كان يعارض ادّعاءها.
وفي ردّه على ذلك، طلب من “هذا لبنان” أن نبيّن له من نحن ونقدم دليلاً على هويتنا. ادعى أنه لم يكذب، لكن أبيغايل نالت معاملة فرد من عائلته. وادعى مرة أخرى أنه دفع لأبيغايل راتبها المستحَق، جزء منه نقداً. على الرغم من أنه قال بأن لديه أدلة على الدفع، إلا أنه لم يقدمها. وأخيراً قال: “لسنا مضطرين لأن نثبت لكِ. نحن لا نعرف من أنت”. وذكرت أيضاً أنهم قد دفعوا تكاليف التوظيف بناءً على عقد مدته سنتان والذي انتهكته. أشرنا إلى أنهم، وليس أبيغايل، قد خرقوا العقد الذي ينص على أن للعاملة حرية المغادرة إن لم تحصل على أجرها، أو إذا كانت تتقاضى أجراً قليلاً مدة 3 أشهر متتالية أو أكثر.
كثيراً ما يُخبر أصحاب العمل المعتدون “هذا لبنان” أنهم يعاملون عاملة المنزل كأحد أفراد الأسرة. العبارة في حد ذاتها هي بمثابة تحذير لنا. وكان ردّ أبيغايل:
“لقد عاقبوني وجوّعوني وضربوني. إنهم لا يعاملونني كأحد أفراد الأسرة.”
عائلة داود هي عائلة أخرى لم تقدم أبدًا أي دليل على هذا هو لبنان ، ولم يدفعوا لأبيجيل راتبها البالغ 4 أشهر.

Often cases are tricky when workers agree to return to an employer for a second contract, despite not having been paid fully for the first. This was the case for Kazeem Basirat Tope (known as Sara), a Nigerian worker, who worked for Dani and Silva Awad in Kaa. The question is raised: why would she come back for another term?
Sara was owed $2,400 from her first contract, and only agreed to come back to Lebanon in the hope of receiving her previous unpaid salary. A common ploy of employers is to withhold part of the salary so that the worker returns for another contract. In Sara’s case, there was also the promise of an enticing pay rise: $300 per month for a 5-year contract.
Sara did return to the Awads, and told This is Lebanon that that is her biggest regret. Not only did she not get paid for her first contract, she received no payment for her second. When she contacted us in April 2021, she had been working for 3 years and 6 months, without any pay. She was owed a total of $12,600 for her second contract (42 months at $300 per month)
When This Is Lebanon spoke with Dani Awad, he explained at great length that he had a good reputation and was the Vice President at the Municipality of Kaa. He insisted that he had every intention of paying Sara and expressed surprise at our intervention despite the size of his debt.
Our first priority was to free Sara from the situation of working without her salary, which amounts to slavery under international law. When we offered to pay her return ticket home, Silva Awad told us that we should be understanding and humane as she was a mother of four, with two houses, and needed the help. She added that they had financial difficulties but would start to pay Sara at the exchange rate – which would amount to a mere $USD 20 per month.
Sara secretly recorded a conversation with Silva who advised her she could make a false accusation of theft against her, call the police and have her put in prison, just as her friend, Caroline, had done to her domestic worker.
It appeared that neither Dani nor Silva could see the contradiction in wanting to continue holding on to Sara despite not having any money. While negotiations were ongoing, they continued to ask Sara to stay and promised her they would pay all her salary at the end of her 5 year contract. They even put us in contact with their “lawyer” who criticised us harshly for prioritising a migrant worker’s rights over those of Lebanese nationals during a financial crisis.
Eventually, after a month of negotiating, we succeeded in repatriating Sara and the employer paid $2,000. Before Sara left them and said goodbye to their four children whom she had raised and was fond of, she asked about her remaining salary, and they simply told her:
“Don’t worry. If we have money we will send it to you”
Sara has been back in Nigeria since 21 May 2021 and has received no further payment. This Is Lebanon negotiators have tried to discuss a settlement, but the Awads refused to pay one cent more.
This is Lebanon recently got back in touch with the Awads to send them this article and provide them an Opportunity to Comment (OTC). In response, they sent us the document below as proof of payment. By signing this document in Arabic – a language Sara does not read – she signed away her rights to a salary. Sara was not aware that she was forfeiting more than 5 years worth of salary.
Our investigations into the Awads have shown that Dani Awad has bad credit and financial issues dating back to 2016. We believe that he employed Sara with no intention of ever paying her.
In countries with labour laws that include domestic workers, the Awads would be behind bars for their crime of domestic servitude.

حين توافق العاملة على العودة إلى صاحب العمل لتبقى فترة عقد ثان، على الرغم من عدم قبضها مستحقاتها المالية عن مدة العقد الأول، غالباً ما تكون هذه الحالات مبطّنة بالخداع. وكان هذا هو حال العاملة النيجيرية الأصل “كاظيم بَصيرات توب” (المعروفة باسم سارة)، والتي كانت تعمل لدى داني وسيلفا عوض في القاع. ما سبب عودتها لتقضي فترة أخرى؟

عادت سارة إلى عائلة عوض، وندمت أشد الندم على ذلك. فلم يقتصر الأمر على أنها لم تحصل على أجر مقابل مدة عقدها الأول لكنها لم تتلقّ أي مبلغ على الإطلاق مقابل مدة عقدها الثاني. حين اتصلت بنا في نيسان 2021، كانت قد عملت لثلاث سنوات و ستة أشهر دون أي أجر. وكانوا يدينون لها بمبلغ 12,600 دولار مقابل عقدها الثاني (42 شهراً بأجر 300 دولار شهرياً).
عندما تحدث “هذا لبنان” مع داني، أوضح بإسهاب أنه يتمتع بسمعة طيبة وكان نائب رئيس بلدية القاع. وأصر على أنه كان ينوي الدفع لسارة. وأعرب عن استغرابه من تدخلنا، رغم حجم ديونه.
كان أهم أولوياتنا تحرير سارة من حالة العمل بدون راتب. عرضنا عليهم دفع تذكرة عودتها إلى بلدها على الفور، لكن سيلفا ألقت خطاباً – كان مقنعاً بالنسبة لها – فحواه يجب أن نكون نحن إنسانيين ونتفهم أن سارة يجب أن تبقى معهم ثلاثة أشهر أخرى لأن سيلفا أم لأربعة أطفال ولديها منزلان، وهي في أمس الحاجة إلى من يساعدها. ومع ذلك، في مشهد المناجاة نفسه، ذكرت أنه ليس لديهم المزيد من المال ولكنهم سيبدأون الدفع لسارة – بسعر الصرف، ما يعادل في ذلك الوقت عشرين دولار فقط في الشهر.

في النهاية، وبعد الكثير من الجدل، تمكنّا من إعادة سارة إلى بلدها وقام صاحب العمل بدفع 2,000 دولار. قبل أن تغادر سارة وتودع أطفالهم الأربعة الذين ربّتهم والمولعة بهم، سألت عن راتبها المتبقي، فقالوا لها ببساطة:
“اطمئني. إن كان لدينا المال، سنرسله إليك.”
لم تستلم سارة أية دفعات مالية أخرى. وقد حاول المفاوضون في “هذا لبنان” مناقشة أمر تسوية مع آل عوض لكنهم رفضوا دفع أي قرش إضافي. أبلغَنا المحققون أن سمعة داني عوض سيئة للغاية في القاع، وأنه اختلس من كل مشروع شارك فيه، بما في ذلك البلدية التي يعمل بها.
أجرت جمعية “هذا هو لبنان” مؤخرًا اتصال مع عوض لإرسال هذا المقال إليهم ومنحهم فرصة للتعليق. رداً على ذلك ، أرسلوا إلينا المستند أدناه كدليل على الدفع ، ومع ذلك ، من خلال التوقيع على هذه الوثيقة باللغة العربية – وهي لغة لا تقرأها سارة – وقعت على حقوقها في الراتب. لم تكن سارة على علم بمصادرة راتبها الذي يزيد عن 5 سنوات.

Watch Bernice explain her experience with the Khoury family
THE STORY
Bernice Obema, a 30-year-old Ghanaian, arrived in Lebanon on 4 March 2019 to work for Mr Mario El Khoury (61) and his wife Taghrid Adib Khoury (63). Bernice didn’t know before arriving that her employer was a former convict who was charged in 1997 for embezzlement and forgery, and sentenced to 3 years in prison. Mario and Taghrid live in Safra, Keserwan. In Lebanon, there are no checks to prevent former convicts from hiring a domestic worker.
On 1 October 2020 Bernice contacted This Is Lebanon. Her agreed salary was $225 per month and she was employed to look after Mario’s disabled sister who had been confined to bed for the last 6 years. By October, Mario owed Bernice 9 months worth of salary. Bernice had asked Mario to send her home as he couldn’t afford to pay her but he told her he was going to take her to a different employer. It is common practice for employers who owe their workers large sums of money to try to transfer them to another household. Whenever Bernice asked Mario about her salary, he told her he didn’t have any dollars.
On 7 October, Mario told Bernice he would send her back to Ghana and send her $150 per month until the debt was paid off. Bernice arrived in Ghana on 11 November but a month before she left Mario engaged an Ethiopian domestic worker, despite owing Bernice $2075. We later spoke to the Ethiopian worker, who said she only stayed one month and was paid for that month.
Once Bernice arrived home, she contacted Mario about the promised installments. He blocked her.
On 10 December, we wrote to Mario sending him the link to Bernice’s video. We told him we were open to hearing his side of the story and asked to see the receipts of payments. He blocked us.
We also tried to contact Mario’s sister, Youmna Hayek, via Facebook. If she saw our messages, she chose not to respond.
In February 2021, we called Mario several times. Taghrid said in the background “let her bugger off.” Then Mario hung up.
Later in February we called back. Mario informed us that the had no money to pay and did not care if he went to jail:
“What do you want me to do? I have nothing. Nothing.”
At the same time, he tried to blame Bernice, accusing her of breaking the contract by leaving early. Nearly every employer we contact about unpaid wages tries to use this excuse to evade payment.
The Ministry of Labour says that any employer who has not paid, or who has underpaid, for 3 consecutive months is deemed to have broken the contract. Mario said he “did not care about the law.” In Lebanon, nothing is done to enforce these laws. So far, authorities have taken limited to no measures to address these abuses.
Unfortunately, Bernice will never receive the 9 months’ salary she is owed. She joins the long list of MDWs that were exploited and abused by their employers and trapped by the unjust Lebanese Kafala system.

في 1 تشرين الأول 2020، اتصلت بيرنيس بـ “هذا لبنان”. كان راتبها المتفق عليه 225 دولار أمريكي في الشهر، وقد تم توظيفها لرعاية شقيقة ماريو المعوقة التي ظلت طريحة الفراش طوال السنوات الست الماضية. بحلول تشرين الأول، كان ماريو مديناً لها برواتب 9 أشهر. طلبت بيرنيس من ماريو أن يرسلها إلى بلدها بما أنه غير قادر على دفع أجورها، لكنه أخبرها أنه سيأخذها إلى صاحب عمل آخر. وقد أصبح الآن، من عادة أصحاب العمل الذين يدينون لعاملاتهم بمبالغ كبيرة من المال أن يحاولوا بيعهن. وكلما سألت بيرنيس ماريو عن راتبها، كان يقول لها أنه ليس لديه دولارات.
في 7 تشرين الأول، أخبر ماريو بيرنيس أنه سيعيدها إلى غانا ويرسل لها 150 دولار شهرياً حتى يتم سداد الدين. وصلت بيرنيس إلى غانا في 11 تشرين الثاني، لكن قبل شهر من مغادرتها أحضر ماريو عاملة منزل أثيوبية بالرغم من أنه كان مديناً لبيرنيس بمبلغ 2075 دولار. تحدثنا إليها لاحقاً وقالت أنها مكثت شهراً واحداً فقط وحصلت على أجرها عن ذلك الشهر.
أين يستطيع محتال سابق مفلس وعاطل عن العمل توظيف خادمتين مقيمتين في المنزل، عدا لبنان؟
بمجرد وصول بيرنيس إلى بلدها، اتصلت بماريو بشأن الأقساط الموعودة. فقام بحظرها.
في 10 كانون الأول، بعثنا رسالة نصية إلى ماريو وأرسلنا له رابط فيديو بيرنيس. قلنا له إننا منفتحون على سماع القصة من طرفه وطلبنا رؤية الإيصالات. فقام بحظرنا. حاولنا التواصل مع شقيقة ماريو، يمنى حايك، على فيسبوك. وإذا كانت رأت رسائلنا، فقد اختارت عدم الرد.
اتصلنا بماريو في شباط. قالت تغريد في الخلفية “دعها تنصرف** عنّا”. ثم أغلق ماريو الخط.
اتصلنا مرة أخرى في وقت لاحق من شباط. قال ماريو أنه ليس لديه نقود ليدفعها ولا يهمّه إن ذهب إلى السجن.
“ماذا تريديني أن أفعل؟ لا أملك شيئاً. لا شيء.”
في الوقت نفسه، حاول إلقاء اللوم على بيرنيس متهماً إياها بخرق العقد بمغادرتها المبكّرة. يحاول تقريباً كل أصحاب العمل الذين نتواصل معهم بخصوص عدم الدفع المتواصل استخدام هذا العذر للتهرب من الدفع.
تقول وزارة العمل أن أي صاحب عمل لم يدفع أو يدفع أجراً منخفضاً لمدة 3 أشهر متتالية يعتبر مخالفاً للعقد. قال ماريو بأنه “لا يبالي بالقانون.” من الواضح أن رسالة وزارة العمل لم تصل إلى أصحاب العمل. أو ربما تكمن المشكلة في أنهم لا يفعلون شيئاً حيال تنفيذ القانون.
لسوء الحظ، لن تحصل بيرنيس على رواتب الأشهر التسعة المستحقة لها، لتنضم إلى القائمة الطويلة لضحايا نظام “الكفالة” اللبناني.

THE STORY
Nana’s story is one of reported deceit, abuse, rape and non-payment of salary at the hands of her employer, Ronald Khouri of Khouri Home (vacational home rental).
She arrived in Lebanon on 17 August 2019. Her first employer, Wisam Yousef Touq, employed her for two months but paid her for only one. Her second employer, Sabine Zaatar, told her she couldn’t afford to buy her shampoo, sanitary pads or any personal items. Nana stayed one month and was not paid.
Following these two employers, Nana was returned to the agency. She tells This is Lebanon that after being kept at the agency for 2 days, she was assigned to a new employer Ronald Khouri on 3 December 2019. She was informed that she would be staying at the employer’s mother’s home as he lived alone with no wife and children. However, this move never happened. Instead, Nana tells This is Lebanon her harrowing story of assault and rape at the hand of her employer:
“During my first month at this man’s house, he started showing me his true nature. He started touching me inappropriately and coming to the bathroom when I was showering. Sometimes he would say we should bath together but I ignored him. Later, he sexually and physically abused me, so I reported him to the agency. My agent’s name is Joseph Azar and his office is in Baouchriye near Big Sale. The agent said I should keep quiet and stay there. I told him that that wasn’t the agreement we had, but he ignored me.
“As if the abuse wasn’t bad enough, Ronald failed to pay me my 4 months’ salary. He wanted me to prove to him that I wasn’t pregnant after he had slept with me many times. He said that when I got my menstruation, I should let him know, before he would pay me my salary. The day I told him I’d got my period, he put his finger inside my vagina several times just to prove that I was not pregnant. I kept complaining to my agent but to no avail. He told me plainly that he was friends with my employer so he couldn’t do anything about it. He left me to suffer at the hands of this wicked employer. Instead of employing me as a maid, my employer used me to satisfy his sexual desires all the time. He abused me sexually and physically for 6 months until I decided on 26 June 2020 to seek help from This is Lebanon.”
She adds: “ He would rape me sometimes when I was arranging his bedroom, cleaning the kitchen or the salon, in my room and even in my working place at the hotel. He would force himself on me. If I made a mistake, he raped me and told me that was the punishment for my mistake. He would keep touching me and rubbing his hands on me, and he made me suck his penis. I was not at liberty to say I want to stop, unless he had reached an orgasm. In a week, he might rape me three times. He never even used any protection or contraceptive.
“Now I’m even scared he could have transferred to me any sexually transmitted disease. This experience has really traumatized me and I want to get my salary from him and leave to my country”
Nana was able secretly to record conversations with Ronald – reviewed by This is Lebanon – in which he says he cannot afford her and has no dollars to pay her. He threatens to take her back to the agency and “they will sell you like a slave. What do you think? That in Lebanon you have your rights?” He also encouraged her to run away, saying
“I want you to run. Because if you run they’re gonna search and find the $10,000 that you stole.”
False accusations of theft against unpaid domestic workers are very common and many women are languishing in prison while their Lebanese employers who haven’t paid them go free.
This Is Lebanon secured Nana’s escape and arranged accommodation for her in a safe house. We sent Ronald the following message: “Hello Ronald. We are This Is Lebanon. Nana alleges that you sexually abused her and owe her $800 in unpaid salary. We would like to know your response to her allegation.” Ronald saw the message but did not respond.
On 13 August 2020 Nana was repatriated to Ghana, traumatized and still owed $800. Ronald Khouri continues to go unpunished for his crime, enjoying the impunity that the kafala system offers.
Nana’s story is just one of many cases of rape and sexual assault of migrant domestic workers at the hands of their employers who continue to live their lives in all impunity.

وصلت إلى لبنان في 17 آب 2019. وظّفها صاحب العمل الأول، وسام يوسف طوق، لمدة شهرين ودفع لها مقابل عمل شهر واحد. أما صاحبة العمل الثانية سابين زعتر، فقالت لها بأنها لا تستطيع شراء الشامبو أو الفوط الصحية أو أي أغراض شخصية لها. فمكثت نانا لمدة شهر واحد ولم تتقاضَ أجرها.
بعد هذين المشغلين ، تمت إعادة نانا إلى المكتب. أخبرت هذا هو لبنان أنه بعد أن بقيت في الوكالة لمدة يومين، تم تعيينها لدى صاحب عمل جديد رونالد خوري في 3 ديسمبر 2019. تم إبلاغها بأنها ستقيم في منزل والدة صاحب العمل لأنه يعيش بمفرده بدون زوجة أو أطفال. ومع ذلك، لم تحدث هذه الخطوة. وبدلاً من ذلك ، تخبر نانا هذا هو لبنان قصتها المروعة عن الاعتداء والاغتصاب على يد رب عملها:

ومع استمرار قيام رونالد بكل هذه الأمور، أهمل دفع راتبي لي مدة 4 أشهر. طلب مني صاحب العمل أن أثبت له بأنني لست حاملاً بما أنه كان ينام معي باستمرار. فقال إنه عندما تأتيني الدورة الشهرية، يجب أن أُعلِمه قبل أن يدفع لي راتبي. وفي اليوم الذي أخبرته فيه أنني في فترة الحيض، وضع إصبعه داخل مهبلي عدة مرات ليتأكد فقط أنني لست حاملاً. واصلت الشكوى إلى وكيل أعمالي لكن دون جدوى. قال لي بصراحة أنني صديق صاحب عملك لذا لا يمكنني فعل أي شيء حيال ذلك. لقد تركني أعاني بين يديّ صاحب العمل الشرير هذا. وبدلاً من العمل كخادمة، استخدمني صاحب العمل لإشباع رغباته الجنسية طوال الوقت. اعتدى عليّ جنسياً وجسدياً لمدة 6 أشهر إلى أن قررت طلب المساعدة من “هذا لبنان”.
ينام معي أحياناً عندما أقوم بترتيب غرفة نومه أو تنظيف المطبخ والصالون، في غرفتي وحتى في مكان عملي في الفندق. يفرض نفسه عليّ. وعندما أرتكب خطأ ما، ينام معي ويقول لي أن هذا هو عقابي لارتكاب الخطأ. ينام معي أحياناً عن طريق مهبلي وأحياناً فتحة الشرج، يواصل ملامستي وفرك يديه بي، ويجعلني أمتص قضيبه. ولست أمتلك الحرية بالقول أنني أريد أن أتوقف، ما لم يصل إلى الذروة. في غضون أسبوع، يمكنه النوم معي ثلاث مرات. لم يستخدم حتى أية حماية. كان ينام معي ولم يشتر لي حتى أية وسيلة لمنع الحمل.
“الآن أنا خائفة من أنه قد ينقل لي أي مرض ينتقل عن طريق الاتصال الجنسي. لقد صدمتني هذه التجربة حقاً وأريد أن أحصل على راتبي منه وأرحل إلى بلدي”
تمكنت نانا من تسجيل المحادثات مع رونالد سراً والتي قال فيها إنه لا يستطيع تحمل تكاليفها وأن ليس لديه المال. يقول بأنه سيعيدها إلى الوكالة و “سيبيعونك كما لو كنت عبدة. ماذا تعتقدين؟ هل لك حقوق في لبنان؟” كما شجعها على الهرب قائلاً:
“أريدك أن تركضي. لأنك إذا ركضت سيفتشون ويجدون مبلغ 10000 دولار الذي سرقتِه.”
إن الاتهامات الكاذبة بالسرقة ضد عاملات المنازل اللواتي لا يتقاضين رواتب منتشرة بشكل كبير والعديد من النساء يقبعن في السجن بينما يتم إطلاق سراح أصحاب العمل اللبنانيين الذين لم يدفعوا لهن.
نسّق “هذا لبنان” هروب نانا ووضعها في منزل آمن. قمنا بإحالتها إلى مركز جمعية مارسا لإجراء فحص التأكد من الصحة الجنسية. أرسلنا لرونالد الرسالة التالية: “مرحباً رونالد. نحن “هذا لبنان”. تقول نانا أنك اعتديت عليها جنسياً وتدين لها براتب غير مدفوع قدره 800 $. نودّ أن نعرف ردك على اتّهاماتها”. رأى رونالد الرسالة لكنه لم يردّ.
في 13 آب، أُعيدت نانا إلى غانا وهي مصابة بصدمة نفسية ومستحقة لمبلغ 800 دولار غير مدفوع. أفلت رونالد خوري من العقاب وما زال يتمتع بالحصانة التي يقدّمها نظام الكفالة.
قصة نانا هي مجرد واحدة من العديد من حالات الاغتصاب والاعتداء الجنسي على عاملات المنازل المهاجرات على أيدي أرباب عملهن الذين يواصلون عيش حياتهم في ظل الإفلات من العقاب.

Watch Kusi, Mavis’s brother, speak out about his sister’s experience with Nawal and Antoine
THE STORY
Mavis Opuku, a 25-year-old Ghanaian, travelled to work in Lebanon for Nawal Salim and Antoine Maroun Yahchouchi at the end of 2019 – at the start of the financial crisis and revolution.
When her brother contacted us in February 2021, it was not the $2,350 in unpaid salary owed to Mavis that he was concerned about, but the lack of food and the physical abuse Mavis reported to her brother, when she finally did have the chance to call home.
We immediately compiled our case and assigned a negotiator to call the employers. Antoine answered the phone but pretended to be someone else. He then passed the phone to Nawal who also pretended to be someone else. You can listen to that conversation.
Nawal, after initially lying about her identity, said of Mavis, “She’s here eating, living and she will take her money when she leaves.” She added, “It’s not a matter that she’s not getting paid; she’s getting what she wants here. Everything is being purchased for her – for $70, $100 per month.” When we pressed Nawal to clarify what Mavis was purchasing with the $2350 she was owed, she said, “pads, deodorants, shampoo.” We questioned why Mavis was having to purchase basic necessities from her own salary, and Nawal replied, “Now shampoo is $20 or $30. We can’t afford it.” She then went on to say that she was going to renew Mavis’ papers. We instructed Nawal, very clearly, not to renew Mavis’ papers as she wanted to go home. This was Mavis’ right.
On 16 February, This Is Lebanon texted Nawal as follows: “You have broken the contract. We are willing to help you by paying for Mavis’ air ticket. Send a picture of her iqama and passport. How much salary are you able to pay her when she leaves? We can work out an installment plan. The most important thing now is to get her home so that your debt doesn’t grow.” Surely they would take us up on our offer to pay for her ticket home, since they claimed they were unable to pay her salary.
It was not that easy, however. The Yahchouchis strongly believed that it was their right to hold on to Mavis and that there was no need for her family to be concerned or for our intervention, since they will “of course pay her salary”. Antoine even went as far as to say, “She is lucky we didn’t throw her out on the streets.” On one of the few occasions Mavis was able to get access to a phone, she left a voice message.
“I can’t stay here any more. Help me to go back. If you knew me and saw how I have become, you’d be shocked. I’ve become slim.”
With every call to the Yachchouhis to try and secure Mavis’ release, we were confronted with impunity and boasting. Antoine would explain at length how he is a doctor in economics and worked at USJ, USEK, and bank Audi and that no one should accuse him of human rights abuses.
The fact is, Mavis was abused and when the Yahchouchis were given the opportunity to send her back home so their debt did not accumulate further, they fought hard to force her to stay. Interestingly, Mavis was instructed to keep away from the windows and have nothing to do with the Syrians in the building as “they are lower than Lebanese.”
Mavis was eventually sent home in August 2021 after a long battle. Despite their assurances that they would pay her, she is still owed $2200 in unpaid salary. Until today they have not settled their dues with Mavis, and that is probably because, as Antoine and Nawal made very clear, they feel they don’t owe her anything, considering they were housing and feeding her at a time other employers were dumping workers on the streets.
Mavis is eternally grateful that she is back home but her one regret is she wishes she didn’t have an opportunity to fight harder for her salary in Lebanon “because then I might have got my money”.

سافرت مافيس أوبوكو، أصلها من غانا وتبلغ من العمر 25 عاماً، للعمل في لبنان لدى نوال سليم وأنطوان مارون يحشوشي في نهاية عام 2019- في بداية الأزمة المالية والثورة.
عندما اتصل بنا شقيقها في شباط 2021، لم تكن مستحقات مافيس المالية البالغ قدرها 2350 دولار ما يقلقه، بل قلة الطعام والتعنيف الجسدي الذي أبلغت مافيس أخيها عنه، حين أتيحت لها أخيراً فرصة للاتصال بعائلتها.
قمنا على الفور بإعداد قضيتنا وكلفنا مفاوضاً للاتصال بأصحاب العمل. رد أنطوان على الهاتف لكنه تظاهر بأنه شخص آخر. ثم أعطى الهاتف لنوال التي تظاهرت أيضاً بأنها شخص آخر. يمكنكم الاستماع إلى تلك المحادثة.
بعد أن أنكرت نوال في البداية هويتها، قالت عن مافيس: “إنها هنا تأكل وتعيش وستأخذ نقودها عند مغادرتها”. وأضافت: “ليس هناك مشكلة بألا تأخذ راتباً؛ فهي تحصل على ما تريده هنا. نشتري لها كل شيء – بمبلغ 70 دولار و 100 دولار شهرياً”. عندما ضغطنا على نوال لتوضيح ما كانت مافيس تشتريه بمبلغ 2350 دولار الذي يدينون به لها، قالت: “فوط صحية، مزيلات العرق، شامبو”. تساءلنا عن سبب اضطرار مافيس إلى شراء الضروريات الأساسية من راتبها الخاص، فأجابت نوال: “سعر الشامبو الآن 20 دولار أو 30 دولار. لا يمكننا تحمل شرائه”. ثم قالت بأنها ستجدد أوراق مافيس. طلبنا من نوال، بكل وضوح، عدم تجديد أوراق مافيس لأنها تريد العودة إلى ديارها. وكان هذا من حق مافيس.
في 16 شباط، كتب “هذا لبنان” رسالة نصية إلى نوال: “لقد خرقتِ العقد. نحن على استعداد لمساعدتك عن طريق دفع ثمن تذكرة سفر مافيس. أرسلي صورة عن إقامتها وجواز السفر. كم يمكنك أن تدفعي لها من الرواتب عند مغادرتها؟ بإمكاننا وضع خطة لتقسيط المبلغ. الشيء الأهم الآن هو إعادتها إلى بلدها كي لا يتراكم الدين عليك”. وكان من المؤكد أنهم سيقبلون بعرضنا أن ندفع ثمن تذكرة عودتها، كونهم زعموا بأنهم غير قادرين على دفع راتبها.
ومع ذلك، لم يكن الأمر بهذه السهولة. اعتقدت عائلة يحشوشي اعتقاداً جازماً أنه من حقهم التمسك بمافيس ولا داعي لأن تشعر أسرتها بالقلق أو أن نتدخل نحن، لأنهم “بالطبع سيدفعون راتبها”. حتى أن أنطوان ذهب إلى حد القول: “إنها سعيدة الحظ لأننا لم نطردها إلى الشارع.” في إحدى المرات القليلة التي تمكنت مافيس من الوصول إلى الهاتف، تركت رسالة صوتية.
“لا يمكنني البقاء هنا بعد الآن. ساعدوني على العودة. إذا كنتم تعرفونني ورأيتم ما أصبحت عليه، ستنصدمون. لقد أصبحت نحيلة”.
في كل اتصال مع عائلة يحشوشي لمحاولة تأمين إطلاق سراح مافيس، كانوا يتصدّون لنا بقدرتهم على الإفلات من العقاب والتباهي. كما شرح أنطوان بإسهاب كيف أنه دكتور في الاقتصاد وعمل في USJ (جامعة القديس يوسف) و USEK (جامعة الثالوث الأقدس في الكسليك) وبنك عودة وأنه لا ينبغي لأحد أن يتهمه بأي انتهاكات لحقوق الإنسان.
والحقيقة هي أن مافيس تعرضت للتعنيف وحين أتيحت الفرصة لعائلة يحوشوشي لإعادتها إلى الوطن حتى لا تتراكم ديونهم أكثر، حاربوا بشدة لإجبارها على البقاء.
أُعيدت مافيس في النهاية إلى بلدها في آب 2021 بعد عراك طويل. وعلى الرغم من تأكيداتهم بأنهم سيدفعون لها، فما زالوا يدينون لها برواتب غير مدفوعة قدرها 2200 دولار. لم يسددوا ديونهم لمافيس حتى اليوم، وربما يعود ذلك، كما أوضح أنطوان ونوال، إلى شعورهم بأنهم لا يدينون لها بأي شيء، معتبرين أنهم كانوا يؤمنون لها المسكن والطعام في حين كان أصحاب العمل الآخرون يرمون عاملاتهم على قارعة الطريق.
تشعر مافيس بالامتنان مدى الحياة لأنها عادت إلى وطنها، لكن أسفها الوحيد هو أنها كانت تتمنى لو أننا نشرنا قصتها على الإنترنت بينما كانت لا تزال معهم “لأنني ربما أكون قد حصلت على أموالي حينها”.

THE STORY
In 2016, at just 15 years old, Mekdes Belayneh arrived in Lebanon from Ethiopia to earn a living and to change her life. She was employed by Tony Reaidy to work for him and his son Elias Reaidy.
Mekdes says of her time working:
“The employer would beat me. I have never met someone like this”
Tony Reaidy owns a castle, a duplex and shops, and Mekdes was responsible for cleaning all of these. She was required to work around 18 hours a day, from early morning to late evening. Throughout the 4 years that Mekdes worked for Tony, she never had a day off.
As Mekdes’ third year was coming to an end, Tony told Mekdes that she could not return to Ethiopia because of the COVID restrictions and the airport closure. However, it seems that although Tony is wealthy, it was his plan to make Mekdes work that year for free. Whenever she asked about her salary, he would tell her that he had no ready cash. He made his income through his property investments in London and he told Mekdes that he would pay her once he went to London. However, he confessed to a family member that he had no intention of paying her. He said that she did not deserve it or that she had to work harder, even though she was already overworked. If Mekdes travelled back to Ethiopia, he would aim to lose contact with her, and thus avoid paying her the hard-earned salary. Between August 2019 and August 2020 she received no payment. The salary owed to her for that period was $2,400.
Tony is described as manipulative and extremely dangerous. Mekdes lived in fear. Tony often lost his temper and would physically abuse her during her third year of working for him.
Tony’s family have spoken with This Is Lebanon and confirmed that he beat Mekdes on 4 or 5 separate occasions. They recall him hitting her because a painting was not centered, even lifting her by her ears, and physically abusing her while she was screaming. This is Y, Tony’s daughter, telling Mekdes to talk about the physical abuse she suffered:
“I’m going to beat the shit out of you till you die!” Tony’s given reason for the physical abuse was, “When you hit them, they know how to work properly.”
Mekdes had no freedom and was constantly harassed. Her phone was regularly confiscated and inspected. She was not allowed to speak on the phone and was told that the phone was being monitored.
After 4 years of working for Tony and his family, Mekdes was sent back to Ethiopia with the promise from Tony that she would receive the money owed at a later date. Once home, she begged him to pay her remaining salary but he threatened her, made excuses or didn’t respond. Eventually he blocked her number so she could not contact him.
It has been over a year since Mekdes returned to Ethiopia. Tony Reaidy claims he doesn’t owe her any money.

في عام 2016، وصلت إلى لبنان مِقدِس بيلاينِه، البالغة من العمر 15 عاماً فقط، من إثيوبيا لكسب لقمة العيش وتغيير حياتها. تم توظيفها من قبل طوني رعيدي للعمل لديه ولدى ابنه الياس رعيدي.
تقول مِقدِس عن المدة التي عملت فيها:
“كان صاحب العمل يضربني. لم أقابل أحداً مثله من قبل.”
يمتلك طوني رعيدي قلعة ومنزلاً من طابقين ومتاجر، وكانت مِقدِس مسؤولة عن تنظيفها كلها. كان يتعين عليها العمل حوالي 18 ساعة في اليوم، من الصباح الباكر حتى وقت متأخر من المساء. طوال السنوات الأربع التي عملت فيها مِقدِس لدى طوني، لم تحصل على يوم عطلة أبداً.
مع اقتراب انتهاء عقد مِقدِس لمدة 3 سنوات، أخبرها طوني بأنها لا تستطيع العودة إلى إثيوبيا نظراً للقيود المفروضة بسبب كوفيد وإغلاق المطار. إلا أنه، يبدو وبالرغم من ثراء طوني، أن خطته كانت إجبار مِقدِس على العمل مجاناً في ذلك العام. كلما سألت عن راتبها، كان يخبرها أنه ليس لديه أموال نقداً. لقد كسب دخله من استثماراته العقارية في لندن وأخبر مِقدِس أنه سيدفع لها بمجرد ذهابه إلى لندن. ومع ذلك، فقد اعترف لأحد أفراد أسرته بأنه لم يكن ينوي أن يدفع لها، لكنه شعر بأنه يحق له التمنّع عن دفع أجورها. قال بأنها لا تستحقها أو أنه كان عليها أن تجتهد بالعمل أكثر، رغم أنها كانت تعمل فوق طاقتها أصلاً. في حال عادت مِقدِس إلى إثيوبيا، كان ينوي أن يقطع الاتصال بها، وهكذا يتجنب دفع راتبها الذي حصلت عليه بشق النفس. بين آب 2019 وآب 2020، لم تستلم أية تحويلات مالية. وتبلغ قيمة مستحقاتها المالية 2400 دولار.
طوني مخادع وخطير للغاية. عاشت مِقدِس في خوف. غالباً ما كان طوني يفقد أعصابه ويعنّفها جسدياً مراراً أثناء عملها لديه في السنة الثالثة.
تحدثت عائلة طوني مع “هذا لبنان” وأكدوا أنه ضرب مِقدِس في أربع أو خمس مواقف منفصلة. يتذكرون أنه ضربها لأن اللوحة كانت مائلة، حتى أنه رفعها من أذنيها، وآذاها جسدياً بينما كانت تصرخ.
لقد شاهد أحد أفراد عائلة طوني وهو يقول لمِقدِس: “سأضربك حتى الموت!” كانت ذريعة طوني للتعنيف الجسدي بأنه “حين تضربهن، يعرفن كيفية العمل كما ينبغي.”

لم تكن مِقدِس حرة وكانت تتعرض للمضايقات باستمرار. لقد حدد لها أوقات استخدام هاتفها بحيث لم يُسمح لها باستعماله إلا بعد الساعة 6 مساءً. وكان يصادر هاتفها ويفتشه باستمرار. لم يُسمح لها بالتحدث على الهاتف وقيل لها إنها تخضع للمراقبة.
بعد أربع سنوات من العمل مع طوني وعائلته، تم خداع مِقدِس للعودة إلى إثيوبيا. أخبرها طوني أنها ستتلقى مستحقاتها المالية في وقت لاحق. كانت تتوسل إليه أن يدفع لها ما تبقّى من رواتبها لكنه كان يهددها أو يختلق الأعذار أو لا يرد. في النهاية حظر رقمها كي لا تتمكن من الاتصال به. لقد مر أكثر من عام منذ عودة مِقدِس إلى إثيوبيا. ويدّعي طوني رعيدي أنه لا يدين لها بأي فلس.

THE STORY

Abigail, a Ghanaian national, arrived in Lebanon on 10 July 2019 to work as a domestic worker for Michel Azzi and Parissida Boutros in Adonis.
Abigail told us she would finish her work in the house at 11:00 pm and then have to massage Parissida’s feet for a long time before going to bed. She had to wake during the night to feed the small dog and “lullaby it to sleep” before waking for work at 6:00 a.m.
Mounir is a managing partner of Al-Kaissar company, a gas station, founded in 2010, alongside Parissida and Michel. Mounir’s son, Semaan, has a history of payment defaults. Abigail claimed
that Mounir Boutros, Parissida’s father, wanted to sleep with her but she refused him.
She says that this refusal did not deter Mounir from touching Abigail’s butt and breasts three times. She tried to refuse to clean Mounir and his wife’s house (located in the same building) but Parissida would get angry with her. Abigail was prepared to tolerate these abusive working conditions; what she couldn’t tolerate was working for free. Whenever she asked for her salary, they yelled at her and told her there were no dollars in Lebanon. She was paid for only 3 months, but has evidence that she is owed 11 months.
Twice, Abigail ran away to the police station. Both times she was returned to her employers with a “warning” to Parissida that she needed to pay Abigail.
On 6 September 2020, at around 9 pm, Parissida told Abigail to get in the car, as she wanted to show her something. Abigail described that Parissida drove her to the airport and tried to deport her without her clothes, phone and the 11 months’ salary she was owed. When Abigail put up a protest in front of the airport officials, Parissida told them that Abigail was crazy. Abigail refused to board without her salary. She found her way to the Ghanaian consulate. On 18 September, she was repatriated to Ghana without her personal possessions or any recovered salary.
On 24 September, Abigail contacted This Is Lebanon asking us to help her get her 11 months’ unpaid salary. We contacted Mounir, Parissida’s father. He refused to give us Parissida’s number, saying she didn’t have a phone. Mounir claims that Abigail has been paid in full. He said that there are 2 OMT receipts and the rest was paid in cash. He said, that he did not care if we posted and had 10 lawyers who would sue us.
This Is Lebanon has tried to speak to Parissida and Michel but Mounir and his wife, Rita, refused to give their contact information. Sadly, Abigail will not receive the salary she worked so hard for.

وصلت أبيغايل نيامي، وهي مواطنة من غانا، إلى لبنان في 10 تموز 2019 لتعمل عاملة منزل لدى ميشيل قزي وباريسيدا بطرس في أدونيس. قالت أبيغايل بأنها كانت تنتهي من أعمال المنزل عند الساعة 11:00 مساءً ثم يتعيّن عليها تدليك قدمي باريسيدا لساعات قبل الذهاب إلى الفراش. كان عليها أن تستيقظ أثناء الليل لإطعام الكلب الصغير و”تهدهد له لينام” قبل الاستيقاظ للعمل في الساعة السادسة صباحاً.
وقد أراد منير بطرس، والد باريسيدا، أن ينام معها لكنها رفضته، حسب قول أبيغايل.
منير هو الشريك الإداري لشركة القيصر التي تأسست عام 2010 (محطة وقود) إلى جانب باريسيدا وميشيل. ولدى سمعان، ابن منير، سوابق من التخلف عن التسديد.
كانت أبيغايل مستعدة لتحمّل ظروف العمل الاستغلالية، غير أنها لم تستطع تحمّل العمل مجاناً. فكلما طلبت راتبها، كانوا يصرخون في وجهها ويقولون لها بأنه لا يوجد دولارات في لبنان. لم تقبض إلا مقابل 3 أشهر فقط. ويدينون لها برواتب 11 شهراً.
هربت أبيغايل مرتين إلى مركز الشرطة. وفي المرتين أُعيدت إلى أصحاب عملها مع إنذار لباريسيدا بأنه ينبغي عليها أن تدفع لأبيغايل.
في السادس من أيلول 2020، حوالي التاسعة مساءً، طلبت باريسيدا من أبيغايل ركوب السيارة لأنها تريد أن تُريها شيئاً. فأخذت أبيغايل إلى المطار وحاولت ترحيلها بدون حتى ملابسها أوهاتفها أو رواتب 11 شهراً التي تستحقها. وعندما قدمت أبيغايل شكوى لدى موظفي المطار، أخبرتهم باريسيدا أن أبيغايل مجنونة. رفضت أبيغايل الصعود إلى الطائرة بدون راتبها ووجدت طريقها إلى قنصلية غانا. في 18 أيلول، أعيدت إلى غانا دون ممتلكاتها الشخصية أو راتبها.
في 24 أيلول، اتصلت أبيغايل بـجمعية “هذا لبنان” تطلب منّا مساعدتها في الحصول على راتبها غير المدفوع لمدة 11 شهراً. اتصلنا بوالد باريسيدا، منير، فرفض إعطاءنا رقم باريسدا قائلاً بأنه ليس لديها هاتف. ويؤكد منير أن أبيغايل قد حصلت على أجرها بالكامل. قال بأن هناك إيصالين OMT والباقي تم دفعه نقداً. وأضاف بأنه لا يكترث إن قمنا بالنشر وأن لديه 10 محامين سيرفعون دعوى قضائية ضدنا.
لقد حاول “هذا لبنان” التحدث إلى باريسيدا وميشيل غير أن منير وزوجته ريتا رفضا إعطاءنا معلومات الاتصال الخاصة بهما. ومن المؤسف، لن تحصل أبيغايل على الراتب الذي استحقته بعرق جبينها.

Watch Ban Mai plead to go home to Nepal
THE STORY
On 25 March, 2021 the Nepali government became involved in the case of Ban Mai Dong, a Nepali woman who traveled to Lebanon 13 years ago. According to the Nepali Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ban Mai, “wished time and again to come back to Nepal but no favorable environment has been fostered by that country to send her back.”
Ban Mai’s family contacted This Is Lebanon seeking help in July, 2021. According to Ban Mai’s younger brother, she has only ever remitted about $3500 (exact amount is unavailable). Her case is complicated because she is ethnically Tamang, speaks no Nepali, has never attended school and is illiterate. These factors make it easy to manipulate and deceive her.
Ban Mai has been employed by Dr Nawaf Assad Abdallah, 81, and his wife Asia Ayte for about 11 years. They have 3 adult children, Layal, Achraf and Firas. Dr Abdallah was a Major in the Customs Department and is now retired. He is a psychologist.
We contacted Ban Mai via Facebook Messenger and were glad to hear that she is not being physically abused; in fact, she has a warm relationship with her employers.
Communication was difficult due to the fact that she doesn’t speak her national language. However, Ban Mai does speak passable Arabic and she was able to express clearly her desire to return to Nepal. You can listen to her voice message here. She says she wants to “return however possible” but doesn’t have trust in people. She said Dr Abdallah says, “What would you do there? You don’t have anyone there.”
Having firmly established Ban Mai’s desire to return to Nepal, we contacted Dr Abdallah who claims that Ban Mai is not a maid, she is a member of the family. According to Dr Abdallah the only person who loves Ban Mai more than him is his wife. He said:
“I asked her who she loves more, her mother who gave birth to her or Asia, and she replied mama Asia.”
That is why, he says, she does not want to return to Nepal. He was keen to emphasize that “she came naked” to them and they paid $1500 to put her under their name. When asked about her salary, he said her family had wasted the money she had sent so she did not want to send anymore, preferring to save it with them. He said, “If I have a few dollars I put them aside for her. We are victims of the financial situation and she is sharing in it equally with us.”

Unfortunately, the discussion with Dr Abdallah did not lead anywhere. We then reached out to Layal Sheppel, his daughter who lives in South Africa, advising her we wanted to avoid posting and asking her to talk to her parents and ask them to send Ban Mai home. She replied, “Good day, after understanding the full story, I will ask you kindly not to bother me or any other person related to my family with your tricks as we can sue all you with law. Ban Mai herself had been saying and keeps saying that she, herself, is very happy and spoiled with my parents and has no intention of leaving them. She can even speak Arabic fluently. We can complain and take you to court wherever you are. So for the last time, please don’t contact me or any other person related to me, my family and Ban Mai included because she is more than a sister to me as the second daughter to my parents.”

Ban Mai has clearly said she wants to go home. She is owed about a decade in unpaid salary. If she considers herself one of the Abdallah family and wishes to return to them after visiting Nepal, that is her choice. But only when she is back in Nepal, amongst her own people, will Ban Mai’s story be fully known.

في 25 آذار 2021، شاركت الحكومة النيبالية في قضية “بان ماي دونغ”، وهي امرأة نيبالية سافرت إلى لبنان منذ ثلاثة عشر عاماً. ووفقاً لوزارة الشؤون الخارجية النيبالية، فإن بان ماي “كانت تتمنى مراراً وتكراراً العودة إلى نيبال، لكن لم يتم توفير بيئة ملائمة من قبل ذلك البلد لإعادتها.”

اتصلت عائلة بان ماي مع جمعية “هذا لبنان” في تموز 2021 تطلب المساعدة. ووفقاً لشقيق بان ماي الأصغر، فقد قامت بتحويل حوالي 3500 دولار فقط (لا تتوفر معلومات دقيقة عن المبلغ). قضيتها معقدة لأنها عرقيّاً من أصل “تامانغ”، ولا تتحدث اللغة النيبالية، ولم تلتحق بالمدرسة مطلقاً فهي أميّة. وهذه العوامل تجعل من السهل خداعها والتلاعب بها.
تعمل بان ماي لدى الدكتور نواف أسعد عبد الله، 81 عاماً، وزوجته آسيا العيط منذ أحد عشر عام تقريباً. لديهم ثلاثة أولاد راشدين، ليال وأشرف وفراس. كان الدكتور عبد الله رائداً في مديرية الجمارك وهو الآن متقاعد. إنه عالم نفس.
اتصلنا مع بان ماي عبر فيسبوك مسنجر وسعِدنا لسماع أنها لا تتعرض للإيذاء الجسدي؛ في الواقع، لديها علاقة حميمة مع أصحاب عملها الذين يعاملونها بشكل جيد. كان التواصل عسيراً لأنها لا تتحدث لغة بلدها. ومع ذلك، فإن بان ماي تتحدث العربية بشكل مقبول لتتمكن من التعبير بوضوح عن رغبتها في العودة إلى نيبال. يمكنكم الاستماع إلى رسالتها الصوتية هنا. تقول بأنها تريد “العودة بأية طريقة ممكنة” لكنها لا تثق بالناس. أخبرتنا بأن الدكتور عبد الله يقول: “ماذا ستفعلين هناك؟ ليس لديك أحد هناك.”

ولهذا السبب، كما يقول، لا تريد العودة إلى نيبال. وكان حريصاً على التأكيد بأنها “جاءت عارية” إليهم ودفعوا 1500 دولار لوضعها تحت اسمهم. وحين سُئل عن راتبها، قال إن عائلتها قد أهدرت الأموال التي أرسلتها لهم لذلك لم تعد ترغب في إرسال المزيد، وتفضّل ادخارها معهم. قال: “إذا كان لديّ بضعة دولارات، أدخرها لها. إننا ضحايا الوضع المالي وهي تشاركنا فيه على قدم المساواة.”

لسوء الحظ، لم نصل بالمناقشة مع الدكتور عبد الله إلى نتيجة. عندها تواصلنا مع ابنته ليال شبل التي تعيش في فرنسا، نُعلمها بأننا نريد تجنب النشر، ونطلب منها التحدث إلى والديها وأن تطلب منهم إعادة بان ماي إلى بلدها. فكان ردّها: “طاب يومكم، بعد فهم القصة كاملة، سأطلب منكم التفضل بعدم مضايقتي أو مضايقة أي شخص آخر مرتبط بأسرتي بحيَلكم، حيث يمكننا مقاضاتكم جميعاً بموجب القانون.
كانت بان ماي نفسها تقول ولا تزال تقول بأنها هي نفسها سعيدة للغاية ومدللة مع والديّ ولا تنوي تركهما. كما يمكنها حتى التحدث باللغة العربية بطلاقة. بمقدورنا تقديم شكوى ضدكم في المحكمة أينما كنتم. لذلك وللمرة الأخيرة، يرجى عدم الاتصال بي أو بأي شخص آخر يتعلق بي، بما في ذلك عائلتي وبان ماي لأنها بالنسبة لي هي أكثر من أخت باعتبارها الابنة الثانية لوالديّ.”

لقد عبّرت بان ماي بوضوح بأنها تريد العودة إلى ديارها. وهم يدينون لها برواتب سنوات غير مدفوعة. إن كانت هي تعتبر نفسها واحدة من عائلة عبد الله وترغب في العودة إليهم بعد زيارة نيبال، فهذا هو خيارها. ولكن فقط حين تعود إلى نيبال و تكون بين أهلها، ستصبح قصة بان ماي معروفة بالكامل.

Watch Birhane talk about her experience with Lina Talhouk
THE STORY
Lina Talhouk lives in Aley and is in a position of leadership at a well-known, private Christian school. In December 2019, Birhane, an Ethiopian freelance worker, was employed by Lina to take care of Lina’s very elderly mother, Tahia. It was demanding work as the old lady was often awake during the night.
For the first five and a half months, Lina paid Birhane her full salary. In the seventh month, Birhane asked Lina for her salary which, by then, was overdue. In response, Lina accused her of stealing her gold jewelry. Birhane claims that Lina didn’t even own gold jewellery. Lina threatened to call the police, so Birhane told her to go ahead and call them. The police arrived and searched all Birhane’s belongings. Finding no stolen items, they left. Birhane realized that Lina was not going to pay her salary, so she left the house, but Lina took her phone and bag of personal possessions which included $200 in cash. Lina later sent Birhane her bag and phone by taxi but kept the $200 cash.
When an Ethiopian community leader called Lina to discuss the return of Birhane’s $200 and the non-payment of salary, Lina said she had evidence that Birhane had stolen from her. The alleged evidence was an OMT receipt she had seen on Birhane’s phone for 2,500.
Birhane had, indeed, sent money to her family in Ethiopia but it was in the Ethiopian currency of Birr, not US dollars. 2,500 Birr is equivalent to about $60. When Lina was pressed about the false accusation of theft, Lina claimed to be unable to continue the conversation because the police were on the line. Lina was asked to put them on speaker but she hung up instead. It is clear in the recording that Lina is lying.
The authorities at the school where Lina teaches claim to uphold values of truth and integrity. They were informed of Lina’s behavior, however Lina remains in position and has still not returned Birhane’s stolen money or paid the overdue salary.

خلال أول خمسة أشهر ونصف، دفعت لينا ل بيرهاني راتبها بالكامل. في الشهر السابع، طلبت بيرهاني من لينا راتبها الذي كان حينئذ قد فات موعد استحقاقه. ورداً على ذلك، اتهمتها لينا بسرقة مجوهراتها الذهبية. تقول بيرهاني أن لينا لم يكن لديها حتى مجوهرات من الذهب. هددت لينا بالاتصال بالشرطة، فطلبت منها بيرهاني المضي قدماً والاتصال بهم. وصلت الشرطة وفتشت جميع مقتنيات بيرهاني. لم يجدوا أية مسروقات فغادروا. أدركت بيرهاني أن لينا لن تدفع لها راتبها، فغادرت المنزل، لكن لينا أخذت هاتفها وحقيبة ممتلكاتها الشخصية التي كانت تحتوي على 200 دولار نقداً. أرسلت لها لينا فيما بعد حقيبتها وهاتفها بسيارة أجرة لكنها احتفظت بمبلغ 200 دولار.
عندما اتصلت رئيسة الجالية الإثيوبية “تسيغريدا” هاتفياً مع لينا لمناقشة استرجاع 200 دولار التي للعاملة بيرهاني وعدم دفع راتبها، قالت لينا أن لديها دليلاً على أن بيرهاني قد سرقتها. وكان الدليل المزعوم إيصال OMT رأته على هاتف بيرهاني بقيمة 2500. لقد أرسلت بيرهاني بالفعل أموالاً إلى عائلتها في إثيوبيا لكنها كانت بالعملة الإثيوبية “بير”، وليس بالدولار الأمريكي. 2500 “بير” تعادل حوالي 60 دولار. عندما ضغطت تسيغريدا على لينا بشأن الاتهام الكاذب بالسرقة، ادعت لينا أنها غير قادرة على مواصلة المحادثة لأن الشرطة كانت على الخط. طلبت منها تسيغريدا أن تشغّل مكبّر الصوت معهم لكنها أغلقت الهاتف في وجهها. واضح في التسجيل أن لينا تكذب.
تزعم السلطات في المدرسة التي تدرّس فيها لينا أنها تعلّي من قيم الصدق والنزاهة. وقد علموا بسلوك لينا، لكن لينا لا تزال في منصبها، ولم تقم بإعادة أموال بيرهاني المسروقة أو دفع الراتب المتأخر عن موعده.
