THE STORY
Most people call the police when they have been mistreated. But where does one go when the perpetrator is a police officer?
This Is Lebanon learned in mid-August, 2020, that Salma had only been paid for 2½ of the 14 months she had been working for Bassem Nasr, a police officer, and his wife, Roba, a school teacher. According to Salma, Bassem told her one story after another to justify his non-payment of her wages and to convince her to continue working despite not receiving her dues. She had finally accepted that he had no intention of either paying her or sending her home. She was desperate not to spend another winter with the Nasrs after what she claimed was a year without a heater or winter clothes or shoes during which she did not know when or if she would be allowed food to eat. Her weight had plummeted. Salma complained of:
“being hit, being bitten by the family dog, having to wash up to five cars in one day beyond her domestic duties, being denied the right to say her Muslim prayers, working unreasonably long hours, and contending with sexual harassment when Roba was not present”
She described a time when Bassem attempted to rape her, but relenting in response to her fighting and tears, told her he would only require oral sex in order for her to get her monthly wages. Although she managed to escape to her room and lock the door, she feared for her safety, especially after Bassem told Roba to ensure Salma did not lock her door at night in case she was needed. Salma was tempted to run away, but knew if she did she would never get her pay. Her mother and siblings were depending on her.

On August 16, This Is Lebanon contacted Bassem, who claimed he had banked Salma’s money for her, but now the bank would not let him withdraw it in dollars. He said that he intended to pay, and that Salma was obligated to complete her contract since the Nasrs had paid the agent for her. This Is Lebanon told him shortly that the agent’s money was between him and the agent. Bassem said he might be able to wire money via his mother’s American bank. The Nasrs told Salma they would send her home with $200 and transfer the rest later. She did not believe them. This day, Salma told us, she was starved.
This Is Lebanon again contacted Bassem the following day. He informed This Is Lebanon that the Ghanaian embassy had told him no flights were available at present, but they would arrange a flight on September 1 if he returned in ten days with $400. Bassem told us he was a police officer and had saved up Salma’s money. We told Bassem that Salma was entitled by law to monthly transfer payments, and as a police officer, he should uphold the law. When asked about his mother’s account in the US, Bassem told This Is Lebanon to forget that idea. He would try to send monthly installments of $300 to Salma at home. He made some rough guesses at what he owed her, the least accurate being less than half of the actual $2300. Roba warned Salma that This Is Lebanon was just trying to steal her money. That day, Salma reported that Roba was uncharacteristically nice to her, and gave her food, too. It did not last. In the next few days, Salma noticed Roba inspecting her belongings and feared her employer was setting a trap. Meanwhile, we were inspecting Police Officer Bassem Nasr.
By September 4, Bassem had still not arranged a flight or taken Salma to the embassy. This Is Lebanon posted a limited-access video to let Bassem know we were serious about exposing reports of his illegal and unethical behavior as a policeman. Bassem finally bought her a ticket to fly home on September 17. That day, Salma told This Is Lebanon, Bassem was “behaving like a good man.” Again, it didn’t last. Two days later Salma said she was starved, weak and exhausted.
The ticket Bassem bought Salma had no price on it. He claimed it cost $900, which she must pay up front though it was far beyond Salma’s means. When Salma protested, Bassem said that his only other option was to resell her to someone else. This Is Lebanon discovered he had paid only $400 but, concerned for Salma’s safety, urged her not to bring up the issue of money while still in Lebanon.
On the way to the airport, Salma asked her boss about her wages. Bassem said $2000, then quickly changed to $1000, admitting he didn’t know what he owed, but claiming to have written it all down. He said he would send her “$400, $300 or at least a minimum of $200 each week, a maximum of $400.“
He reckoned at that rate he could pay her off in two months which, even by his own very faulty reckoning at the maximum rate, was unrealistic. Then Bassem switched on some Arabic music and tried to sexually assault Salma in the car.
He demanded, grabbed and pleaded while Salma made excuses and said “no” repeatedly. This was her last experience in Lebanon.
Once safe in Ghana, Salma followed This Is Lebanon’s advice and demanded her wages according to the contract, and not, as Bassem suggested, according to the official rate of lira to the dollar as it had been at the end of each month, which would have been a pittance in light of the hyperinflation plaguing Lebanon. Bassem responded by accusing Salma, rather belatedly for credibility, of stealing his phone and his wife’s gold. Salma responded in anger with threats, but later calmed down and carried forth her rightful demands. In the end, Salma received most of her salary from the Nasrs, but when she reminded Bassem that he had yet to pay for her $400 airfare and $50 Covid PCR as promised and required by law, he blocked Salma and her mother.
This Is Lebanon asked if she wanted to expose what the Nasrs had done to her. Although the amount still owed was worth nearly two months’ wages to Salma, she didn’t want to be vindictive, or to damage the Nasr children. What made her decide was the thought of other women being starved, unpaid, overworked and sexually abused, with nowhere to turn because their abuser was a policeman. Despite all the dangers of kafala, hundreds of workers are still pouring into Lebanon by lies and deception. This article is for them.

يتصل معظم الناس بالشرطة حين يتعرضون لسوء المعاملة. لكن أين يذهب المرء عندما يكون الجاني ضابط شرطة؟
علمت جمعية “هذا لبنان” في منتصف آب 2020، أن سلمى لم تقبض سوى راتب شهرين ونصف من أصل 14 شهراً كانت تعمل أثناءها لدى باسم نصر، ضابط شرطة، وزوجته ربا، تعمل مدرّسة. وحسب قول سلمى، فقد روى لها باسم قصة تلو الأخرى لتبرير عدم دفعه أجورها وإقناعها بمواصلة العمل رغم عدم قبض مستحقاتها. فأدركت أخيراً أنه لا ينوي الدفع لها أو إرسالها إلى بلدها. كان لديها رغبة شديدة بعدم قضاء شتاء آخر مع عائلة نصر بعدما أمضت عاماً بدون مدفأة أو ملابس شتوية أو حذاء، ولم تكن تعرف خلال هذا العام متى ستأكل أو إن كان سيقدّم لها الطعام، على حد قولها. وقد انخفض وزنها إلى حد كبير. اشتكت سلمى من:
تعرضها للضرب، والعض من كلب العائلة، واضطرارها إلى غسل خمس سيارات في يوم واحد بالإضافة إلى واجباتها المنزلية، وحرمانها من حقها في الصلاة كمسلمة، والعمل لساعات طويلة بشكل غير معقول، ومقاومة التحرش الجنسي أثناء غياب ربا.
وصفت لنا مرة حين حاول باسم اغتصابها، وأنه استجابةً لمقاومتها ودموعها، قال لها أنه سيكتفي بطلب الجنس الفموي وبذلك تحصل على أجرها الشهري. وعلى الرغم من تمكنها من الهروب إلى غرفتها وإقفال الباب، كانت تخشى على سلامتها، خاصة بعد أن طلب باسم من ربا التأكد من عدم إقفال سلمى بابها ليلاً في حال كانت هناك حاجة إليها. استحسنت سلمى فكرة الهروب، لكن أدركت أنها إذا فعلت ذلك فلن تحصل على أجرها. و قد كانت والدتها وإخوتها يعتمدون عليها.
كلب العائلة الذي عض سلمى
في 16 آب، اتصل “هذا لبنان” مع باسم، الذي ادعى أنه أودع أموال سلمى في المصرف، لكن البنك لن يسمح له الآن بسحبها بالدولار. قال إنه ينوي الدفع، وأن سلمى ملزمة بإتمام عقدها لأن عائلة نصر دفعت للوكيل من أجل الحصول عليها. أخبرته جمعية “هذا لبنان” مباشرة أن أموال الوكيل كانت بينه وبين الوكيل. قال باسم أنه قد يكون قادراً على تحويل الأموال عبر مصرف والدته الأمريكي. أخبرت عائلة نصر سلمى أنهم سيرسلونها إلى بلدها مع 200 دولار وتحويل الباقي لاحقاً. لم تصدقهم. أخبرتنا سلمى أنه لم تحصل على الطعام ذلك اليوم.
اتصل “هذا لبنان” مع باسم مرة أخرى في اليوم التالي، فأعلمهم أن سفارة غانا أخبرته بعدم وجود رحلات جوية في الوقت الحالي، لكنهم سينظمون رحلة في 1 أيلول إذا عاد في غضون عشرة أيام بمبلغ 400 دولار. قال لنا باسم أنه ضابط شرطة وقد كان يدّخر أموال سلمى. قلنا لـه أنه يحق لسلمى بالقانون أن يُدفع لها بتحويلات مالية شهرية، وباعتباره ضابط شرطة، يجب عليه الالتزام بالقانون. عندما سئل عن حساب والدته في الولايات المتحدة، قال باسم لـ “هذا لبنان” أن ينسوا الفكرة. سيحاول إرسال دفعات شهرية بقيمة 300 دولار إلى سلمى في بلدها. و قدم بعض التخمينات التقريبية حول ما يدين به لها، أقلها دقة يبلغ أدنى من نصف المبلغ الفعلي الذي هو 2300 دولار. حذرت ربا سلمى من أن “هذا لبنان” يحاول سرقة أموالها فحسب. في ذلك اليوم، ذكرت سلمى أن ربا كانت لطيفة معها بشكل لم تعهده من قبل، وأطعمتها أيضاً. لم يدم ذلك طويلاً. في الأيام القليلة اللاحقة، لاحظت سلمى أن ربا تفتش في أغراضها، فخافت أن تكون صاحبة عملها قد نصبت لها فخاً. في غضون ذلك كنا نتحرى عن رئيس الشرطة باسم نصر.
بحلول 4 أيلول، لم يكن باسم قد رتب سفر سلمى بعد، ولم يأخذها إلى السفارة. نشر “هذا لبنان” مقطع فيديو محدود الوصول إليه كي يعلم باسم بأننا جادّون في فضح معلومات عن سلوكه غير القانوني وغير الأخلاقي كشرطي. اشترى لها باسم أخيراً تذكرة عودة إلى بلدها في 17 أيلول. في ذلك اليوم، قالت سلمى لجمعية “هذا لبنان”، كان باسم «يتصرف كرجل صالح». ومرة أخرى، لم يدم ذلك طويلاً. بعد يومين قالت سلمى إنها لم تحصل على طعام، وكانت ضعيفة ومنهكة.
لم يكن هناك سعر على التذكرة التي اشتراها لسلمى. لقد ادعى أنها كلفت 900 دولاراً، ويجب أن تدفعها مقدماً على الرغم من أنها تتجاوز قدرة سلمى بكثير. عندما احتجت سلمى، قال باسم إن خياره الوحيد هو إعادة بيعها لشخص آخر. اكتشف “هذا لبنان” أنه لم يدفع سوى 400 دولاراً، ولكن خوفاً على سلامة سلمى، شدد عليها بعدم إثارة موضوع المال أثناء وجودها في لبنان.
في الطريق إلى المطار، سألت سلمى صاحب العمل عن أجورها. قال باسم إنها 2000 دولار، ثم سرعان ما تحولت إلى 1000 دولار، معترفاً بأنه لا يعرف بكم يدين لها، لكنه ادعى أنه قد سجل كل شيء. قال إنه سيرسل لها «400 دولار، 300 دولار أو ما لا يقل عن 200 دولار كل أسبوع، كأقصى حد 400 دولار». لقد احتسب أنه بإمكانه بذلك المعدل أن يدفع لها أجورها في غضون شهرين، وهو ما لم يكن واقعياً حتى في حسابه الخاطئ إلى أقصى درجة.
ثم شغّل باسم بعض الموسيقى العربية وحاول التحرش بها جنسياً في السيارة. طلب منها وأمسكها وتوسل إليها بينما قدمت سلمى الأعذار وقالت «لا» مراراً وتكراراً. كان هذا آخر ما اختبرته في لبنان.
بمجرد أن أصبحت بأمان في غانا، اتبعت سلمى نصيحة “هذا لبنان” وطالبت بأجرها وفقاً للعقد، وليس كما اقترح باسم، وفقاً للسعر الرسمي لليرة مقابل الدولار كما كان في نهاية كل شهر، والذي كان ممكناً أن يشكل نسبة زهيدة في ظل التضخم الهائل الذي يعاني منه لبنان. وردّ باسم باتهام سلمى، متأخراً نوعاً ما ليثبت مصداقيته، بسرقة هاتفه وذهبِ زوجته. للأسف، وجهت سلمى أيضاً بعض التهديدات باسم “هذا لبنان”، من دون موافقتنا، وهذا يتعارض مع سياستنا. فيما بعد، تواصلت مع “هذا لبنان” قبل كل اتصال مع باسم. وفي النهاية، تلقت سلمى من عائلة نصر كامل راتبها، لكن عندما ذكّرت باسم أنه لم يدفع بعد ثمن تذكرة سفرها التي تبلغ 400 دولاراً وأيضاً 50 دولاراً لاختبار (Covid) كما وعدها وكما هو مطلوب بالقانون، قام بحظر سلمى ووالدتها.
سأل “هذا لبنان” إذا كانت تريد أن تكشف ما فعلته عائلة نصر بها فكانت سلمى متحفظة. وعلى الرغم من مستحقاتها المالية تساوي أجر شهرين تقريباً، إلا أنها رفضت أن تكون انتقامية أو أن تسبب الضرر بأطفال نصر. لكن ما جعلها تقرر ذلك هو فكرة أن هناك نساء أخريات تتعرضن لسوء التغذية، ولا تحصلن على أجورهن، وتعملن فوق طاقتهن، وتتعرضن للتحرش الجنسي، ولا مكان تلجأن إليه لأن المعتدي عليهن كان شرطياً. رغم كل مخاطر الكفالة، ما تزال مئات العاملات يتدفقن إلى لبنان بكل بسذاجة. وهذه المقالة موجهة إليهن.

Patience, a 31 year old Ghanaian, contacted This Is Lebanon, asking for help. She had been working for Mr. Mouzannar for 5 years but he had not renewed her residency permit and owed her $3,300 in unpaid salary (11 months). The last payment she had received was in June the previous year. Her father had fallen ill and she wanted to send money for his treatment and go home. She had wanted to leave earlier when her mother had died but was unable to because Mr. Mouzannar had not done her papers. She claims he refused to pay her and send her home, instead ordering her to get out of his house. She informed us she was planning to leave the house because “I cannot continue working while he’s not paying me.” We strongly advised Patience against leaving as it was possible he would lodge a false accusation of theft against her, and she would never receive her salary.
27-28 August 2020
27 August. We contacted Mr. Mouzanner asking him to, “Take Patience to the consulate, book her ticket and send her home. Payment can be worked out later.” He blocked us.
28 August. Patience’s friend contacted us to advise that Patience had been arrested and was being held at Adlieh Detention Centre.

We messaged Mr. Mouzannar: “We heard you had her imprisoned. This is going to end very badly for you. You need to get her released, pay her in full and send her home. That is the ONLY way to save your personal reputation and the reputation of your business.” In response, he forwarded a photo of her private parts which he said she had sent to his mobile. He wrote, “Ur subject is a Ninfomania unstable liar.”
When we asked Patience about this, she explained that she had meant to send the picture to her fiance in Spain but had sent it to Mr. Mouzannar in error. When she realized her mistake, she quickly deleted it but not before he’d taken a screenshot. He also claimed the voice message she’d sent to her fiance was intended for him. When we asked why she would speak to him in her native language, he replied, “She is very clever.” When we enquired why he had had her imprisoned, he wrote, “She was threatening me. She wanted to kill me and all my family.”
14-15 Sept
2020
14 September TIL advised Mr. Mouzannar that we would expose him on social media if he did not pay Patience, and get her released and sent home. He replied, “She admitted in front of the police that she was just black-mailing me and that I owe her nothing and still I gave her 650$ and I paid to make her travel.” Furthermore, he claimed she signed a paper affirming that he owed her no more money and that she promised to stop her lying accusations. He said that he had treated her like a princess, at the same time accusing her of nymphomania, pornography and mental instability.
15 September. Patience contacted us from Ghana. “I am in my country now. He gave me only $650 out of $3,300. He told them I use knife on him which I will never do that in my life.” When we asked Patience if she had signed a paper, she told us she had not been given a paper to sign, and pointed out that, anyway, everything was written in Arabic.

She went on to add that Mouzannar was bringing minors into his house for underage sex. Whenever the girls came, he would ask her to stay in the kitchen and close the door. He didn’t want her to see any of them.
After we posted about Mr. Mouzannar on social media, an acquaintance of his contacted us saying about Patience, “She was a good lady and devoted. I wish her best of luck because she deserves it. I’m sorry I couldn’t help when they took her, otherwise I would have defended her.”
Why was Patience arrested and detained without any evidence?
Why didn’t the Lebanese authorities ask Mr. Mouzannar for proof that he had fully paid her?
Because this is typical, and this is Lebanon.

اتصلت بيشنس، من غانا، تبلغ من العمر 31 عاماً، بجمعية “هذا لبنان” طالبة المساعدة. كانت تعمل لدى السيد مزنّر لمدة 5 سنوات لكنه لم يجدد لها تصريح الإقامة ومدين لها برواتب غير مدفوعة قدرها 3300 دولار (11 شهراً). آخر دفعة قبضتها كانت في حزيران العام السابق. مرض والدها وأرادت إرسال المال لعلاجه والعودة إلى بلدها. كانت قد أرادت المغادرة في وقت سابق عندما توفيت والدتها لكنها لم تتمكن من ذلك لأن السيد مزنر لم يقم بعمل أوراقها. وحسب قولها، فقد رفض أن يدفع لها وأن يرسلها إلى وطنها، وبدلاً من ذلك أمرها بالخروج من منزله. أبلغتنا أنها كانت تخطط لمغادرة المنزل “لأنني لا أستطيع مواصلة العمل بدون أن يدفع لي”. نصحنا بيشنس بشدة ألّا تغادر لأنه كان من الممكن أن يقدم اتهاماً كاذباً بالسرقة ضدها، ولن تحصل على راتبها أبداً.
26 آب
27 آب. اتصلنا بالسيد مزنر طالبين منه أن “اصطحِب بيشنس إلى القنصلية، واحجز لها تذكرة وأرسلها إلى بلدها. والدفع يمكن القيام به لاحقاً”. فقام بحظرنا.
28 آب. اتصل بنا صديق بيشنس لإبلاغنا باعتقال بيشنس واحتجازها في مركز احتجاز العدلية.
27-28 آب
كتبنا رسالة إلى السيد مزنر: “لقد سمعنا بأنك وضعتها في السجن. لكن ستكون نهاية الأمر سيئة للغاية بالنسبة إليك. عليك إطلاق سراحها والدفع لها كامل مستحقاتها المالية وأرسالها إلى بلدها. إنها الطريقة الوحيدة للحفاظ على سمعتك الشخصية وسمعة عملك”. رداً على ذلك، أرسل صورة لأعضائها الحميمية وزعم أنها قد أرسلتها إلى هاتفه المحمول. وكتب: “موضوع قضيتك (بيشنس) كاذبة وغير متوازنة.” أخبرتنا بيشنس لاحقاً أنها كانت تقصد إرسال الصورة إلى خطيبها في إسبانيا لكنها أرسلتها إلى السيد مزنر عن طريق الخطأ. وحين أدركت خطأها، حذفتها بسرعة ولكن كان قد التقط صورة شاشة. كما ادعى أيضاً أن الرسالة الصوتية التي أرسلتها إلى خطيبها كانت مقصودة له. عندما سألناه لماذا قد تتحدث معه بلغتها الأم، أجاب: “إنها ذكية للغاية”. حين سألناه لماذا وضعها في السجن، كتب: “كانت تهددني. لقد أرادت قتلي أنا وجميع أفراد عائلتي.
1 أيلول
أعلم “هذا لبنان” السيد مزنر بأننا سنفضحه على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي إن لم يدفع ل “بيشنس”، ويطلق سراحها ويعيدها إلى بلدها. أجاب: “لقد اعترفَتْ أمام الشرطة بأنها كانت تبتزني وحسب، وأنني لا أدين لها بشيء ومع ذلك أعطيتُها 650 دولاراً ودفعتُ لها أجور سفرها. لقد وقّعَتْ على ورقة بأني لم أعد أدين لها بشيء وأنها ستتوقف عن كل أكاذيبها، بعد كل ما اتهمتني به وكل الصور الخليعة، واختلال العقل، والشبق، إنها كاذبة غير متّزنة وكل ما كانت تفعله في منزلي لكنها كانت تنال معاملة الأميرة. عند هذه النقطة ليس لدي ما أضيفه.”
14 أيلول
اتصلت بنا بيشنس من غانا. “إني الآن في بلدي. لقد أعطاني 650 دولاراً فقط من أصل 3300 دولاراً. وأخبرهم أنني أسحب السكين في وجهه، الشيء الذي لن أفعله أبداً في حياتي”. عندما سألنا بيشنس عما إذا كانت قد وقّعت على أية ورقة، أجابت: “لم يعطني أحد أية ورقة للتوقيع عليها بالإضافة إلى أن كل شيء مكتوب باللغة العربية.”
15 أيلول
حسب قول بيشنس فإن كلود كان يأتي بفتيات قاصرات إلى المنزل لممارسة الجنس مع من هنّ دون السن القانونية. كتبت: “كلما جاءت إحدى الفتيات كان يطلب مني ملازمة المطبخ وإغلاق الباب. لم يكن يريدني أبداً أن أراهن. فهن كثيرات. فتيات يبلغن من العمر 15 عاماً “
بعد أن نشرنا عن السيد مزنّر على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، اتصل بنا أحد معارفه قائلاً عن بيشنس: “لقد كانت سيدة طيبة ومخلصة. أتمنى لها كل التوفيق لأنها تستحق ذلك. وأنا آسف لأنني لم أستطع المساعدة عندما أخذوها، وإلا لكنت دافعت عنها.”

Naume Kavosa, Kenyan, contacted This Is Lebanon on 11 August 2020. She had been in Lebanon for 1 year 7 months and never been paid. She was very worried because her employers, Ali and Marwa Al Zein, were sending her home the next day with the promise they’d pay her in full before she left. She wrote:
“I gave him all the details to send the money but he has not given me the receipt yet. What can I do? Please help me.”
We advised her to get pictures of her employers and leave on the booked flight. With Lebanon in turmoil, the most important thing was to get home. Ali did send some of Naume’s salary. He gave her the Western Union receipt before she boarded but had torn it so the amount sent was not visible. When she arrived back in Kenya, she found that it was $770, instead of the $3800 she was owed.
Naume said her madam:
“treated me in a harsh way. I was not allowed to sleep for more than 6 hrs. All the cleaning and cooking I am the one who was doing it.”
According to Naume, her madam’s mother, Zainab, had an Ethiopian domestic worker who ran away in March 2020 because she was being abused and had received no salary for a year.
Naume was hospitalized on arrival in Kenya for surgery on her back.
This is Lebanon called Ali who said he had paid her $4000 by Western Union. We contacted Ali on WhatsApp and asked him to send a pic of the receipt. He saw the message but never responded.
Ali changes his story…
In January, 2021, a Lebanese negotiator called Ali. This time he said she remitted $600 in her first year and $1800 on the day she traveled. He accused her of theft of an iPhone 4, 165,000 LL, and 3 bottles of perfume.
He said Naume shared a bed with his daughter, making the point that she did not sleep on the floor. He also said he treated her like a daughter, not a maid. He said he smuggles cows from Syria into Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan and Qatar and pays no taxes. If you want to buy his smuggled meat, you can visit Al Hara Trading Butchery in Sidon.
It is clear from the phone calls with Ali that he contradicts himself. His story is inconsistent. Sadly, Naume will never receive the $3030 the Al Zeins owe her. It is also likely that there is, indeed, another domestic worker victimized by the same family who could have a false accusation of theft against her. It is possible she will end up in prison like many other victims of non-payment. In some ways, Naume was the lucky one.

اتصلت نعومي كافوسا، الكينية الأصل، بجمعية “هذا لبنان” في 11 آب 2020. كانت قد أمضت في لبنان مدة عام و 7 أشهر ولم تقبض أجورها مطلقاً. كانت قلقة للغاية لأن أصحاب العمل، علي ومروى الزين، كانوا سيرسلونها إلى بلدها في اليوم التالي مع وعد بأن يدفعوا لها بالكامل قبل مغادرتها. كتبت لنا:
“أعطيته كل المعلومات ليرسل المال لكنه لم يعطني الإيصال بعد. ماذا أفعل؟ أرجوكم ساعدوني.”
نصحناها بالحصول على صور لأصحاب العمل والمغادرة على متن الرحلة التي تم الحجز فيها. ولأن لبنان في حالة اضطراب، كان أهم شيء هو العودة إلى الوطن. أرسل علي قسماً من راتب نعومي. فقد أعطاها إيصال ويسترن يونيون قبل صعودها إلى الطائرة، لكنه مزقه بحيث لم يكن المبلغ المرسَل ظاهراً. حين عادت إلى كينيا، وجدت أن المبلغ كان 770 دولاراً، بدلاً من مستحقاتها البالغة 3800 دولار.
قالت نعومي بأن سيدتها:
“إذ لم يكن مسموحاً لي بالنوم لأكثر من 6 ساعات. وكنت أقوم بكافة أعمال التنظيف والطبخ”
وحسب قول نعومي، فإن زينب، والدة سيدتها، كان لديها عاملة منزل أثيوبية هربت في آذار 2020 لأنها تعرضت للتعنيف، ولم تتقاضَ أي راتب لمدة عام.
دخلت نعومي المستشفى لدى وصولها إلى كينيا لإجراء عملية جراحية لظهرها.
اتصل “هذا لبنان” ب “علي” الذي قال أنه دفع لها 4000 دولاراً عن طريق ويسترن يونيون.
تواصلنا مع علي عبر واتسآب وطلبنا منه إرسال صورة للإيصال. فشاهد الرسالة ولم يرد.
يغير علي قصته…
في كانون الثاني 2021، اتصل مفاوض لبناني ب “علي”. هذه المرة قال إنها حولت 600 دولار في عامها الأول و 1800 دولار في اليوم الذي سافرت فيه. اتهمها بسرقة iPhone 4 و 165000 ليرة لبنانية و 3 زجاجات عطر.
وقال إن نعومي تقاسمت السرير مع ابنته، محاولاً إثبات أنها لم تكن تنام على الأرض. أضاف بأنه عاملها كأنها ابنته وليس كخادمة. أخبرنا أنه يهرّب الأبقار من سوريا إلى لبنان والعراق والأردن وقطر ولا يدفع ضرائباً. فإذا كنتم ترغبون في شراء لحومه المهرّبة، بإمكانكم زيارة ملحمة الحارة التجارية في صيدا.
يتضح من المكالمات الهاتفية مع علي أنه يناقض نفسه. رواياته متضاربة. وللأسف، لن تتلقى نعومي مستحقاتها المالية 3030 دولاراً من عائلة الزين. ومن المحتمل أيضاً أن تكون هناك بالفعل عاملة منزل أخرى ضحية للعائلة نفسها التي يمكن أن توجّه إليها اتهاماً كاذباً بالسرقة. من الممكن أن ينتهي بها الأمر في السجن مثل العديد من ضحايا عدم دفع الأجور. بطريقة ما، كانت نعومي هي التي حالفها الحظ.
هذا هو نظام الكفالة. هذا هو لبنان.

Regina, a 37-year-old Filipino national, arrived in Lebanon on the 26th of July 2019 to work in the house of Georges Kfoury, a 90-year-old retired doctor.
She contacted This Is Lebanon on 27th October 2019 to ask for help because Dr. Kfoury was withholding her salary. She said he did not know she had a cell phone. She was afraid he would get angry because he didn’t want her to have contact with anyone except himself.
However, there was an additional problem. Dr. Kfoury was sexually harassing Regina. She told us:
“He wants me to look at his co** every time I am taking his bath but I ignored him.”
She secretly recorded conversations with him saying he wanted to examine her private parts and wanted her to sleep with him.
It seems that Dr. Kfoury thought that in hiring a domestic worker he was also securing sexual services from her. Regina told him that in the Philippines they respect old people and bow to them. She said they treated old men as their fathers. Dr. Kfoury was not interested in being treated as a father; he wanted a wife, “somewhere to put my heart.” It took a long time for Regina to trust us with his contact details.
Initially she was too scared even to tell us who he was. She wrote:
“I am afraid to tell because he told me that I will be in jail if I seek help. He told me if I tell anybody I will go to jail. He told me he will tell the police a story that I am stealing his money but that is not true. I don’t steal his money ever.”
She wrote that she was depressed and sometimes thought of killing herself. She had contacted the embassy but had no response.
We tried, without success, to find a way for her to escape or be released. She was completely locked in and not allowed to go to the market for food. It was all ordered. Her release came when Dr. Kfoury passed away from a heart attack on the 30th of June 2020. Regina was repatriated but is still owed 2 months’ salary.
Why post now that he has died? Firstly, because Regina wants her story to be told. Secondly, because many other women are subject to the same sexual harassment that Regina endured for 11 months. Her story is not unique. This is the Kafala system and it must be abolished.

“يريدني أن أنظر إلى عضوه في كل مرة أساعده فيها على الاستحمام، لكني تجاهلته.”
وقامت سرّاً بتسجيل محادثات معه يقول فيها بأنه يرغب أن يتفحص أعضاءها التناسلية ويريدها أن تنام معه. لقد اعتقد الدكتور كفوري أنه بتوظيف خادمة لديه كان يضمن خدماتها الجنسية أيضاً. أخبرته ريجينا أنهم في الفلبين يحترمون كبار السن وينحنون لهم. قالت إنهم كانوا يعاملون كبار السن كآبائهم. لم يكن الدكتور كفوري مهتماً بأن يلقى معاملة الأب؛ بل أراد زوجة، “مكاناً ما أضع فيه قلبي.” لقد استغرقت ريجينا وقتاً طويلاً لتثق بنا فيما يتعلق بمعلومات الاتصال بصاحب العمل. في البداية كانت خائفة جداً لدرجة أنها لم تخبرنا من يكون. كتبت:
“أخشى أن أخبركم، لأنه قال لي أنني سأرى نفسي في السجن إذا طلبت المساعدة. قال لي إن أخبرتُ أحداً سأذهب إلى السجن. كما قال بأنه سيخبر الشرطة قصةً بأنني أسرق أمواله لكن هذا ليس صحيحاً. أنا لا أسرق ماله أبداً “.
كتبت أنها كانت مكتئبة وتفكر أحياناً في قتل نفسها. قالت بأنها اتصلت بالسفارة لكنها لم تحصل على أي رد.
بحثنا أمر إمكانية الهروب لكن ريجينا كانت محبوسة. لم يُسمح لها بالذهاب إلى السوق لشراء الطعام. لقد تم طلب كل شيء إلى المنزل. وكان يبدو أنه ليس من طريقة للخلاص، غير أن تحرّرها تمّ عندما توفي الدكتور كفوري في 30 حزيران 2020 وأعيدت ريجينا إلى وطنها. لماذا ننشر القصة الآن بعد أن مات؟ لأن العديد من النساء الأخريات يتعرضن للتحرش الجنسي الذي عانت منه ريجينا لمدة 11 شهراً. قصتها ليست فريدة من نوعها. هذا هو نظام الكفالة ويجب إلغاؤه.

THE STORY
Abike, a 23 year old Nigerian, arrived in Lebanon on 15 October, 2019. Her first employers were Colonel Abbas Akil and his wife, Nivine Assaf.
Abike alleges that they did not give her sufficient food saying it was too expensive and that Nivine took Abike to clean her mother’s house and her mother’s neighbour’s house. In October, 2020 Abike contacted This Is Lebanon for help in getting the salary Colonel Akil owed her. He had paid her for 4.5 months of the 10 months she had worked for him. In August, 2020 Abike had asked to be returned to the agency as she was owed 5.5 months salary.
Far from receiving help, she alleges that at the agency she was given two choices: either return to Colonel Abbas and continue to work for free or sign a paper forfeiting all her rights to her unpaid salary. Abike refused to sign and claims she was threatened with physical abuse. Colonel Abbas also held her passport and told her he would not return it unless she signed.
According to Abike, Najah Traboulsi, the agent, is a close friend of Colonel Akil’s and she also threatened Abike with physical abuse. What could a vulnerable domestic worker do when faced with those choices from a Colonel in the Lebanese Armed Forces? Abike wrote:
“Abbas might kill me…. because he told me that if he killed me and people asked him why, he would accuse me of stealing. I am so scared right now.”
The Document Abike was forced to sign
She signed. The document she signed said, “I hereby leave Mr Abbas with my salary. I don’t want to have anything with Mr Abbas again.“
Abike worked for her next employer for 6 months. This employer also withheld Abike’s salary and refused to buy her basic items, like Vaseline, claiming they were too expensive. On 15 February, 2021, Abike ran to the Nigerian consulate. This employer shall remain nameless since she took Abike’s passport to the Nigerian consulate at This Is Lebanon request.
Colonel Akil owes Abike $1,150 and the second employer owes her $300. We sent Colonel Akil the video Abike recorded and asked him to send us pictures of the salary he had paid her. We like to hear both sides of a story and wanted to hear his. He responded by sending us the picture of the paper Abike signed and wrote, “This a proof that habibat (sic) has no money with us and plz dont call me again.” We replied, “She is home now and wants the salary you owe her. If you paid her, please send pics of all the OMT receipts. As a senior person in government, we are sure you are aware that domestic workers must be paid at the end of every month and a receipt signed.” Colonel Akil blocked us.
Abike flew home to Nigeria on 27 February, 2021. This Is Lebanon used the funds collected through the #SendUsHome campaign to pay for her air ticket and PCR test.

“I sold everything in order to travel to Lebanon and feed myself, I never know this is what I am going to face.”

وصلت أ.و.ج، النيجيرية الأصل والبالغة من العمر 23 عاماً، إلى لبنان في 15 تشرين الأول 2019. و كان صاحب العمل الأول العقيد عباس عقيل وزوجته نيفين عساف.
لم يقدّما لها طعاماً يكفيها قائلَين بأنه باهظ الثمن، على حد قول أ.و.ج، وقد أخذت نيفين أ.و.ج لتنظيف منزل والدتها ومنزل جارة والدتها. في تشرين الأول 2020، اتصلت بجمعية “هذا لبنان” تطلب المساعدة في الحصول على الرواتب التي يدين بها العقيد عقيل لها. كان قد دفع لها أجور 4 أشهر ونصف من أصل 10 أشهر عملت لديه فيها. وفي آب 2020، طلبت أ.و.ج إعادتها إلى الوكالة إذ كان مديناً لها برواتب 5 أشهر ونصف.
تقول أنها في الوكالة أُعطِيت خيارين: إما العودة إلى العقيد عباس والاستمرار في العمل مجاناً أو التوقيع على ورقة تتنازل فيها عن جميع حقوقها في رواتبها غير المدفوعة. رفضت أ.و.ج التوقيع وتم تهديدها بالتعنيف الجسدي. كما صادر العقيد عباس جواز سفرها وقال لها بأنه لن يعيده لها إلا إذا وقّعت.
وحسب قول أ.و.ج، فإن الوكيلة نجاح طرابلسي، وهي صديقة مقرّبة للعقيد عقيل، قد هددت أيضاً أ.و.ج بالتعنيف الجسدي. ماذا يمكن أن تفعل عاملة منزلية ضعيفة عندما يواجهها عقيد في الجيش اللبناني بهذه الخيارات؟ كتبت لنا أ.و.ج:
“قد يقتلني عباس …. لأنه أخبرني أنه إذا قتلني وسأله الناس عن السبب، فسوف يتهمني بالسرقة. إني خائفة جداً الآن”.
فوقّعتْ. وتقول الوثيقة التي وقعتها: “إني أترك للسيد عباس رواتبي. لا أريد أن أحصل على أي شيء من السيد عباس مجدداً”
عملت أ.و.ج لدى صاحبة العمل الثانية لمدة 6 أشهر. والتي تمنّعت أيضاً عن دفع رواتب أ.و.ج ورفضت شراء حاجياتها الأساسية، مثل الفازلين، لأنها كانت باهظة الثمن. في 15 شباط 2021، هربت أ.و.ج إلى القنصلية النيجيرية. ستبقى صاحبة العمل مجهولة الهوية بما أنها سلّمت جواز سفر أ.و.ج إلى القنصلية النيجيرية بناء على طلب “هذا لبنان”.
إن العقيد عقيل مدين للعاملة أ.و.ج بمبلغ 1150 دولار وصاحبة العمل الثانية مدينة لها بـمبلغ 300 دولار. أرسلنا للعقيد عقيل مقطع الفيديو الذي سجلته أ.و.ج وطلبنا منه أن يرسل لنا صوراً عن الرواتب الذي دفعها لها. فنحن نحب أن نسمع القصة من الطرفين وأردنا سماعها منه. رد بإرسال صورة الورقة الموقعة من أ.و.ج وكتب: “هذا دليل على أن حبيبة (كما كتب حرفياً) ليس لها مال لدينا، ومن فضلكم لا تتصلوا بي مرة أخرى.” أجبناه: “إنها في بلدها الآن وتريد الرواتب الذي تدين بها لها. إذا كنت قد دفعت لها، يرجى إرسال صور لجميع إيصالات OMT. وبصفتك شخصاً بارزاً في الحكومة، فأنا متأكدة من إدراكك بأنه يجب دفع أجور عاملات المنازل في نهاية كل شهر بإيصال موقّع.” فقام العقيد عقيل بحظرنا.
عادت أ.و.ج إلى نيجيريا في 27 شباط 2021. وقد دفع “هذا لبنان” ثمن تذكرة الطيران واختبار PCR .
كتبت أ.و.ج:
“لقد بعت كل شيء من أجل السفر إلى لبنان وإعالة نفسي، ولم أعرف أبداً أن هذا ما سأواجهه.”

THE STORY
It is easy to assume that if a worker has been with the same employer for a long time, everything is going well. That definitely was not the case for Emmaculate Fondum Eyah, a Cameroonian woman, who came in 2013 to work for Cynthia and Bechara Khairallah, only to be sent home 7 years later with 50% of her salary. A seven-year relationship was no guarantee for Eyah that she would receive her rights, nor was it a guarantee that the employers would fulfill their responsibilities.
The same day that Eyah safely arrived back home, she contacted This is Lebanon for help. Eyah had not been paid since 2017 and when she was packing her bags to go back to Cameroon for good, Cynthia showed no signs of paying her. It was not until Eyah got to the airport that Cynthia gave her a wad of cash, which Eyah had to quickly tuck away, for obvious security reasons. Clearly, Cynthia thought giving three years worth of salary – 7,452 USD – at a public place, in an airport, was acceptable and justified.
To Eyah’s surprise, her employer only paid 4,000 USD, about 50% of what was owed to her, but there was little she could do, considering she was already at the airport and had a plane to catch, not to mention that her employer had already left. This is why she contacted us as soon as she arrived to Cameroon.
When our case negotiator contacted Cynthia to understand her point of view, Cythnia explained at great length what a bad worker Eyah was and how she drove other workers away, and in contrast, how she was great with the worker and always bought her clothes, bags and perfumes.
But when the time came to discuss what really mattered to Eyah, the issue of non-payment of her salary, Cynthia turned defensive and aggressive.
When the negotiator asked the employer how much she paid Eyah, she said she couldn’t remember.

“I gave her a handful of dollars. Maybe it was $9,000. Maybe it was $10,000. I don’t know.”
We found it highly implausible that an employer who paid thousands of dollars couldn’t remember how many thousands. When she was asked for receipts, she said she’d thrown them out.
The negotiator asked Cynthia how she saw fit to pay such a large sum of salary at the airport, without giving Eyah an opportunity to count her money in an appropriate environment. Cynthia initially denied paying three years of wages at the airport, scoffing at the accusation. She said, “I gave her the money before she left the house. We packed her stuff and I gave her her money and we left.”
Later in the same conversation, she changed her story saying she actually gave her the money in the car on the way to the airport. Only at the end of the conversation, did she admit to paying it in haste, at the airport.
Cynthia could not make up her mind where she gave her the money. We find it strange that someone who supposedly handed over about $10,000 in cash couldn’t remember where that took place. According to Cynthia, the airport was the best place to pay three years worth of salaries, and Eyah could have easily complained to a police officer about the alleged underpayment, even if that meant missing her flight.

We strongly believe that is unacceptable. There is only one way to pay salaries and that is according to the labour contract signed at the notary public. Article six of that contract states that the worker should be paid in full every month. Ms. Cynthia and Mr. Bechara Khairallah severely breached the contract. According to Eyah, “madam Cynthia is the one who wanted to keep my money and she promised to pay me all my money when am done with my contract.”
Eyah is still owed 3,452 USD and Cynthia has refused to pay. Cynthia has a new domestic worker. We don’t know if she is being paid or not.
Eyah explains she wants the world to know what happened to her and says:
“She gave perfume, a watch, chains and some nice dresses and shoes as a gift but when I told her that I want to go to my country she was very upset and promised to teach me a lesson. I believe the best lesson she promised to teach me was not paying all my money and taking back some of the items she gave me”

في اليوم نفسه الذي عادت فيه “إياه” إلى وطنها سالمة، اتصلت بـجمعية “هذا لبنان” طلباً للمساعدة. لم تقبض”إياه” أجرها منذ عام 2017، وحين كانت تحزم حقائبها لتعود نهائياً إلى الكاميرون، لم تُظهر سينثيا أية علامة تدل على أنها ستدفع لها، إلى أن وصلت “إياه” إلى المطار فأعطتها سينثيا مبلغاً نقدياً، كان على “إياه” أن تدسّه بحقيبتها وتخفيه سريعاً، لأسباب أمنية بديهية. من الواضح أن سينثيا ظنّت أن إعطاء رواتب ثلاث سنوات – 7،452 دولاراً أمريكياً – في مكان عام، في أحد المطارات، هو أمر مقبول ويمكن تبريره.
ومما أدهش “إياه”، أن صاحبة العمل قد دفعت لها 4000 دولار أمريكي فقط، أي حوالي 50 بالمئة من مستحقاتها المالية، إلا أنه لم يكن بإمكانها فعل الكثير، مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار أنها كانت أصلاً في المطار وعليها أن تلحق بطائرتها، ناهيك عن أن صاحبة العمل كانت قد غادرت. ولذلك اتصلت بنا بمجرد وصولها إلى الكاميرون.
عندما تواصل مفاوضنا مع سينثيا لنفهم وجهة نظرها، شرحت سيثنيا بإسهاب كم كانت “إياه” سيئة وكيف أبعدت عاملات أخريات، وفي المقابل كم كانت هي رائعة مع العاملة، واشترت لها دائماً العطور والملابس والحقائب. ولكن عندما حان الوقت لمناقشة ما يهم “إياه” حقاً، أي قضية عدم دفع راتبها، أصبحت سينثيا دفاعية وعدوانية.
وحين سأل المفاوض صاحبة العمل عن المبلغ الذي دفعته ل”إياه”، قالت إنها لا تذكر.
استمع إلى سينثيا تدعي أنها لا تستطيع تذكر المبلغ الذي دفعته.
“أعطيتها حفنة من الدولارات. ربما كانوا 9000 دولار. وربما 10000 دولار. لا أعلم.”
نرى أنه من غير المعقول للغاية أن صاحبة العمل التي دفعت آلاف الدولارات لا يمكنها تذكر عددها. ولما طُلب منها إيصالات، قالت بأنها قد تخلصت منها.
سأل المفاوض سينثيا كيف ترى أنه من المناسب دفع مثل هذا المبلغ الكبير من الراتب في المطار، دون إعطاء فرصة ل “إياه” أن تعدّ نقودها في ظروف مناسبة. أنكرت سينثيا في البداية دفع أجور ثلاث سنوات في المطار، مستهزئة بهذا الاتهام. وقالت: “لقد أعطيتها النقود قبل أن تغادر المنزل. وضّبنا أغراضها وأعطيتها المال وغادرنا”.
في وقت لاحق من المحادثة نفسها، غيرت روايتها قائلة بأنها بالفعل أعطتها المال في السيارة في طريقها إلى المطار.
فقط في نهاية المحادثة، اعترفت بالدفع لها على عجل في المطار. بإمكانكم الاستماع إليها وهي تقول ذلك هنا. لم تستطع سينثيا أن تقرر أين أعطتها المال. نرى أنه من الغريب أن شخصاً يُفترض أنه سلّم ما يقارب 10000 دولار نقداً لا يمكنه تذكر مكان حدوث ذلك.
اسمع سينثيا تخبر كذبة عن دفعها لإياه في المنزل.

كان المطار، بالنسبة لسينثيا، المكان الأفضل لدفع رواتب ثلاث سنوات، وكان بإمكان “إياه” بسهولة أن تشتكي إلى ضابط شرطة من النقص المزعوم للمبلغ، حتى لو كان ذلك يعني عدم اللحاق برحلتها.
لدينا إيمان راسخ بأن هذا غير مقبول. فهناك طريقة واحدة فقط لدفع الرواتب وذلك حسب عقد العمل الموقع لدى كاتب العدل. تنص المادة السادسة من هذا العقد على أن العاملة يجب أن تتقاضى أجرها بالكامل كل شهر. والسيدة سينثيا والسيد بشارة خير الله خرقا العقد بشدة. وفقاً ل”إياه”، “سيدتي سينثيا هي التي أرادت الاحتفاظ بأموالي ووعدت بدفع كل نقودي عند انتهاء عقدي.”
لم تقبض “إياه” مستحقاتها المالية 3،452 دولاراً أمريكياً، وقد رفضت سينثيا أن تدفع. سينثيا لديها عاملة منزلية جديدة. لا نعرف ما إذا كانت تتقاضى أجراً أم لا.
أوضحت “إياه” أنها تريد أن يعرف العالم ما حدث لها وتقول:
“لقد قدّمت لي عطراً وساعة وسلاسل وبعض الفساتين والأحذية الجميلة كهدية، لكن عندما أخبرتها أنني أريد الذهاب إلى بلدي، انزعجت جداً ووعدت أن تلقّنني درساً. أعتقد بأن أفضل درس وعدتني بتعليمي إياه هو عدم دفع كل أموالي واسترداد بعض الأشياء التي قدمتها لي.”

THE STORY
Ade Glory, a 25 year old Cameroonian, had served her time. Her 2-year contract had finished in April 2021 but her employer, a judge, was not allowing her to go home, demanding that she stay another year or pay him to release her. A simple text to the judge did the trick: “We’re sure that you, as a member of the legal profession, are aware of your obligations under the contract. One of those obligations is to provide Glory with a ticket home at the end of her 2 year contract. Please send a picture of that air ticket. Thank you.”
Exactly two weeks after contacting us, Glory was home with her full salary paid. She said:

لقد قضت “أدي غلوري”، و هي شابة من الكاميرون تبلغ من العمر 25 عاماً، فترة خدمتها. في نيسان 2021، انتهت مدة عقدها لسنتين لكن صاحب العمل، وهو قاضٍ، لم يسمح لها بالعودة إلى بلدها، وطالبها بالبقاء مدة عام آخر، أو أن تدفع له مقابل إطلاق سراحها. لكن رسالة نصية بسيطة للقاضي قد وفت بالغرض: “نحن على يقين من أنك، بصفتك عضواً في مهنة المحاماة، مدركٌ لالتزاماتك المنصوص عليها في العقد. وأحد هذه الالتزامات هو منح غلوري تذكرة العودة إلى الوطن في نهاية عقدها لمدة عامين. الرجاء إرسال صورة لتذكرة الطيران تلك. وشكراً لك.”
بعد أسبوعين بالضبط من اتصالها بنا، عادت غلوري إلى بلدها وبحوزتها راتبها كاملاً. قالت:
“لقد كان الأمر أشبه بالمعجزة.”
THE STORY
Imagine you lived in a remote village in Nepal, spoke a tribal language and didn’t know the national language well, and your eldest daughter had gone to Lebanon over a decade ago and hadn’t returned or sent money for several years.
This was the situation of Gaj Bahadur Moktan whose daughter, Salmo Maya Muktan, left Nepal on 27 August 2010 at the age of 20 to work for Mr Farouk Ismail Khoder and his wife Mrs Asadghik. They have an adult son and their known address is Baabda, Rihanie, Arayssi Building.
In her first 2 years, Salmo was able to send money home – about $3700. After that, all payments stopped. She continually asked for her salary as she went to Lebanon to support her parents and 5 younger siblings, but was met only with false promises.
In 2015, Salmo’s father contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu who notified the Nepalese consulate in Beirut of her situation. He also recently contacted This Is Lebanon. This Is Lebanon ascertained that the consulate had Salmo removed from the Khoder home and she has been in a Caritas shelter since 19 June, along with another Nepali worker, Sajita, also owed a decade’s salary.
Instead of paying at least part of the huge salary debt he owes to Salmo, Mr Khoder engaged a lawyer, Mr Samir Haidar, to represent him. Domestic workers are commonly deported from the Caritas shelter without their salaries, their cases being referred to a labyrinthine judicial system where cases drag on for years, the workers are unable to present their own testimonies, and justice is usually denied. One such case is that of Halima, whose salary was unpaid for a decade, and who was enslaved by a Lebanese politician, Ibtissam Saade. Halima returned to the Philippines in 2017 and four years later has not received any payment. Unpaid salary cases of a decade or more are not uncommon, the longest This Is Lebanon case being a Filipino who was enslaved for 21 years.
This is Lebanon contacted Mr Haidar, citing the case of Sajita, whom they helped to rescue from her enslavers. This Is Lebanon went on to state that Salmo and her family are willing to negotiate a settlement which can include an installment plan. They requested that he ask his client to present a proposal for them to consider.
This Is Lebanon discovered that Mrs Asedik Fyounijar, who was Salmo’s official sponsor, died on 30 May 2019, leaving her husband, Mr Khoder with an open court case with huge debts due to a breach of trust, and a lawsuit against their company, Walco, who deal in car paint.
Mr Haidar claimed that his client intended to pay his debt to Salmo by trying to sell an apartment in his deceased wife’s name, but he also made many false accusations. He misrepresented his client’s age (he is 77, not “in his 80s”). He asserted that Salmo’s passport had not been withheld (it had), that her father was a drunkard (he isn’t), that Salmo had not asked for her salary (she had), that there are ongoing negotiations with the Consulate (there are not) and that Salmo was treated like a daughter (far from it).
Finally he accused This Is Lebanon of slander and defamation of character and threatened legal action against them. Salmo’s $18,000 salary remains unpaid.
UPDATE: After This Is Lebanon posted Salmo’s story, she received the following payments: $4000 in mid December 2021 and $5,000 on 11 May 2022.

تخيل لو أنك تعيش في قرية نائية في نيبال، وتتحدث لغة قبليّة ولا تعرف لغة البلد جيداً، وغادرت ابنتك الكبرى إلى لبنان منذ أكثر من 10 سنوات ولم تعد أو ترسل المال لعدة سنوات.
كان هذا هو حال غاج باهادور موكتان الذي غادرت ابنته، سالمو مايا موكتان، نيبال في 27 آب 2010 حين كانت في سن العشرين، للعمل لدى السيد فاروق إسماعيل خضر وزوجته السيدة أسَدغيك. ولهما ابن راشد وعنوانهما المعروف هو بعبدا، الريحانية، مبنى الرّيسي.
في أول عامين من عملها، تمكنت سالمو من إرسال النقود إلى بلدها – حوالي 3700 دولار. بعد ذلك، توقفت جميع الدفعات المالية. كانت تطالب براتبها باستمرار حيث أنها ذهبت إلى لبنان لإعالة والديها وإخوتها الخمسة الصغار، لكنها لم تلقَ إلا وعوداً كاذبة.
في عام 2015، اتصل والد سالمو بوزارة الخارجية في كاتماندو والتي أبلغت القنصلية النيبالية في بيروت عن حالتها. كما اتصل مؤخراً بجمعية “هذا لبنان” التي تأكدت من أن القنصلية قد أخرجت سالمو مؤخراً من منزل خضر وهي الآن في أحد ملاجئ كاريتاس، مع عاملة نيبالية أخرى، ساجيتا، والتي يدينون لها أيضاً برواتب عشر سنوات.
بدلاً من دفع جزء على الأقل من الراتب الضخم الذي يدين به لسالمو، استعان السيد خضر بمحامٍ وهو السيد سمير حيدر، لتمثيله. يتم عموماً ترحيل عاملات المنازل من ملجأ كاريتاس دون رواتبهن، وتحال قضاياهن إلى نظام قضائي يشبه المتاهة حيث تطول القضايا لسنوات، ولا تتمكن العاملات من تقديم شهاداتهن، وعادة ما يُحرَمن من العدالة. إحدى هذه الحالات هي حليمة التي لم يُدفع راتبها لعقد من الزمن، والتي تم استعبادها من قبل السياسيّة اللبنانية ابتسام السعدي. عادت حليمة إلى الفلبين في عام 2017 والآن بعد أربع سنوات لم تتلق أية مبالغ بعد. حالات الرواتب غير المدفوعة لعشر سنوات أو أكثر ليست نادرة الحدوث، وأطول قضية تابعها “هذا لبنان” كانت الفلبينية التي تم استعبادها لمدة 21 عاماً.
اتصلت جمعية “هذا لبنان” بالسيد حيدر، مستشهدة بقضية ساجيتا، التي ساعدوا في إنقاذها من مستعبديها. ومضى “هذا لبنان” ليصرّح بأن سالمو وعائلتها على استعداد للتفاوض بشأن تسوية يمكن أن تتضمن خطة لتقسيط المبلغ. طلبوا منه أن يطلب من موكله تقديم اقتراح لهم للنظر فيه.
اكتشف “هذا لبنان” أن السيدة أشيدك، التي كانت الكفيل الرسمي لسالمو، قد توفيت في 30 أيار 2019، وتركت زوجها السيد خضر مع قضية ديون ضخمة بسبب خيانة الأمانة، ودعوى قضائية ضد شركتهم، Walco، التي تتاجر في طلاء السيارات.
ادّعى السيد حيدر بأن موكله كان ينوي تسديد ديونه إلى سالمو من خلال محاولة بيع شقة باسم زوجته المتوفاة، لكنه وجّه أيضاً العديد من الاتهامات الكاذبة. لقد أعطى فكرة خاطئة عن عمر موكله (هو 77، وليس “في الثمانينيات من عمره”). أكد أن جواز سفر سالمو لم تتم مصادرته (لقد تمت)، وأن والدها كان سكّيراً (هو ليس كذلك)، وأن سالمو لم تطالب براتبها (بل كانت تطالب)، وأن هناك مفاوضات جارية مع القنصلية (ليس هناك أية مفاوضات) وأن سالمو تلقّت معاملة الابنة (بعيدة كل البعد عن ذلك).
وأخيراً اتهم “هذا لبنان” بالتشهير وتشويه السمعة وهدّد باتخاذ إجراءات قانونية ضدهم. ولم تزل رواتب سالمو البالغة 18 ألف دولار غير مدفوعة.
تحديث: بعدما نشرت جمعية (هذا لبنان) قصة سالمو، تلقت المبالغ التالية: 4000 دولار في منتصف ديسمبر (كانون الأول) 2021 و5000 دولار في 11 مايو (أيار).

उनको पहिलो 2 वर्षमा, साल्मो घर पैसा पठाउन सक्षम थिइन – लगभग $ 3700। त्यस पछि, सबै भुक्तानी बन्द भयो। उनी आमा बुबा र ५ कान्छो भाइबहिनीहरुलाई सहयोग गर्न लेबनन गएकि थिइन तर लगातार आफ्नो तलब माग्दा पनि झुटो प्रतिज्ञाहरु मात्र भेटियो।
२०१५ मा, साल्मोका बुबाले काठमाडौं मा परराष्ट्र मन्त्रालय लाई सम्पर्क गरे जसले बेरूत मा नेपाली दूतावास लाई उनको स्थिति को बारे मा सूचित गरे। उनले भर्खरै दिस इज लेबनान लाई पनि सम्पर्क गरे। टीआईएलले पत्ता लगायो कि वाणिज्य दूतावासले भर्खरै खोडरको घरबाट साल्मो हटाएको र उनी अहिले अर्की नेपाली कामदार सजिता जसको एक दशकको तलब पनि बाँकी छ सँगै क्यारिटास आश्रयमा रहेकी छिन।
साल्मोको तलबको कम्तीमा केही भाग तिर्नुको सट्टा, श्री खोडरले एक वकील श्री समीर हैदरलाई उनको प्रतिनिधित्व गर्न लगाए। घरेलु कामदारहरु सामान्यतया आफ्नो तलब बिना Caritas आश्रयबाट निर्वासित हुन्छन, उनीहरुका मुद्दाहरु एक भूलभुलैया न्यायिक प्रणाली मा पठाइन्छ जहाँ केसहरु केही बर्षहरुको लागी लम्बाइन्छ, श्रमिकहरु आफ्नो गवाही पेश गर्न असमर्थ छन्, र न्याय सामान्यतया इन्कार गरिन्छ। यस्तै एक मामला हलिमा को हो, जसको तलब एक दशक को लागी भुक्तान गरिएको थिएन, र जो एक लेबनानी राजनीतिज्ञ, इब्तिस्साम सादे को दास थिइन्। हलिमा फिलिपिन्स 2017 मा फर्किन् र चार बर्ष पछि सम्म कुनै भुक्तानी प्राप्त भएको छैन। एक दशक वा सो भन्दा बढी को तलब वेतन मामलाहरु असामान्य छैन, सबैभन्दा लामो This Is Lebanon मामला एक फिलिपिनो को हो जो २१ बर्ष को लागी दास बनाइएको थियो।

THE STORY
Fe Simon, a Filipino, and Gadise Fanto, an Ethiopian, worked in Lebanon in the home of Rosine Azzam, her husband Michel, and their two adult daughters. Rosine is a lawyer and a shareholder in her father’s company, Bou Farah Petroleum. Michel used to sell underwear and work at Blom Bank. The Azzam family live in Mar Chaaya.
Of the two domestic workers, Fe was the lucky one. She had a phone and was in regular contact with This Is Lebanon between August 2019 and October 2020, when she went home. In texts, calls and videos she testified to the abuse that Gadise was suffering.
“Madam Rosine slapped Gadise. Many times she hurt her.”
Fe sent videos of Gadise crying and asking for help.
Although not physically abused, Fe’s salary was withheld, but due to This Is Lebanon’s intervention she returned to the Philippines with $4000 in cash. In the end, she was paid in full.
Gadise was less fortunate. According to Fe, Rosine would make Gadise empty all the kitchen cupboards, wash the already clean pots, pans and crockery then put them all back again. Rosine made Gadise sign a paper agreeing to deductions from her salary for ‘misdemeanors’ e.g.
“Sunday 25 August at 10 am sink is very dusty $10 deducted”
“Wednesday, 28 August 2019, “Forgot to fill black pepper – $5 deducted”
“Sunday, 6 October 2019, “I woke up and again oven is very dirty from last day. – $50 deducted”
After Fe left, Gadise was on her own without any means of contact with the outside world. Unlike Fe, she had no phone and was denied contact with her family for months on end. Having succeeded in getting Fe repatriated with her salary, we at This Is Lebanon turned our efforts to getting Gadise home. Over a period of months, a negotiator communicated with Rosine. Despite the long-term non-payment, Rosine insisted that Gadise must stay until May when she said her contract finished. Gadise had already worked for her for almost 3 years. Rosine always had an excuse why we couldn’t speak to Gadise – her father was sick and she was at the hospital, there was no network, she had Covid…and so on. Then she stopped responding to our calls and messages. But not before she texted, “Gadise is living with us as family.”
On 18 March, 2021, we received unexpected good news from Gadise’s brother who informed us that Gadise was back in Ethiopia and she had been paid in full! We later learned how Gadise escaped: she threw a piece of paper from the balcony onto the pavement below asking for HELP. Someone referred the note to KAFA who sent it to the police.
However, the task is not finished. TIL has been informed about the situation of Towabech Wude Fanto, Gadise’s sister. Towabech works for Roy Abou Farah and his wife, Manal Aouad (39). Roy and Rosine are siblings but according to Rosine, she and Roy are not on speaking terms. In May, Towabech was able to call her family from a phone borrowed from another Ethiopian she met when out with her employers – her first call in two years. She has not been paid for years and Roy is forcing her to stay another year. She is being physically abused. She is effectively enslaved in Roy and Manal’s house. Gadise and her family are very worried about Towabech.
This Is Lebanon has called Roy many times but there is never any reply. We have also texted him without any response. We call on the Lebanese authorities to mobilize and rescue Towabech, to ensure that her due salary is paid and that she is safely repatriated.

كانت “في سيمون” الفلبينية، و”غاديس فانتو” الإثيوبية، تعملان في لبنان في منزل روزين عزام (52 عاماً) وزوجها ميشيل (62 عاماً) وابنتيهما الراشدتين. روزين محامية ومساهمة في شركة والدها، “بو فرح للبترول”. كان ميشيل يبيع الملابس الداخلية ويعمل في بنك Blom. تقيم عائلة عزام في مار شعيا.
كانت “في” الأوفر حظاً من بين العاملتين المنزليتين. إذ كان لديها هاتف جوال، وكانت على اتصال دائم بـجمعية “هذا لبنان” من شهر آب 2019 إلى حين عودتها إلى بلادها في تشرين الأول 2020. وشهدت في الرسائل النصية والمكالمات ومقاطع الفيديو على الانتهاكات التي عانت منها غاديس..
“سيدتي روزين صفعت جاديس، يا سيدتي. وقد تسببت بأذيتها مرات عديدة”.
أرسلت “في” مقاطع فيديو لغاديس وهي تبكي وتطلب المساعدة.
صحيح أن “في” لم تتعرض للإيذاء الجسدي، إلا أنها لم تقبض رواتبها، ولكن بسبب تدخل “هذا لبنان”، عادت إلى الفلبين وقد حصلت على 4000 دولار نقداً. في النهاية، حصلت على أجرها بالكامل.
كانت غاديس أقل حظاً. حسب قول “في”، فإن روزين كانت تجعل غاديس تفرغ جميع خزائن المطبخ، وتغسل الأواني والمقالي والأواني الفخارية التي سبق تنظيفها، ثم تعيدها كلها مرة أخرى. وقامت روزين بإجبار غاديس على توقيع ورقة توافق فيها على اقتطاع مبلغ من راتبها بسبب “مخالفات” على سبيل المثال:

“الأحد، 6 تشرين الأول 2019،” استيقظت ومرة أخرى الفرن متسخ جداً من اليوم السابق – خصم 50 دولار.
بعد مغادرة “في”، كانت غاديس بمفردها دون أية وسيلة للاتصال بالعالم الخارجي. وعلى عكس “في”، لم يكن لديها هاتف، وحُرمت من الاتصال بعائلتها لشهور متتالية. بعد أن نجحنا في إعادة “في” إلى بلدها ومعها راتبها، قمنا في “هذا لبنان” بتركيز جهودنا على إعادة غاديس إلى وطنها. وعلى مدى أشهر، تواصل أحد المفاوضين مع روزين. على الرغم من عدم الدفع لمدة طويلة، أصرت روزين على أن غاديس يجب أن تبقى حتى أيار عندما ينتهي عقدها حسب قولها. وكانت غاديس قد عملت لديها بالفعل لما يقارب 3 سنوات. كانت روزين دائماً تجد الأعذار لتعيق تحدثنا إلى غاديس – كان والدها مريضاً، كانت في المستشفى، لم تكن هناك شبكة، وكانت مصابة بـ كورونا … وما إلى ذلك. ثم توقفت عن الرد على مكالماتنا ورسائلنا. ولكن ليس قبل أن ترسل رسالة نصية: “تعيش غاديس معنا كأحد أفراد العائلة”.
في 18 آذار 2021، تلقينا أخباراً سارة غير متوقعة من شقيق غاديس الذي أخبرنا أن غاديس عادت إلى إثيوبيا وقد حصلت على أجرها بالكامل! وقد علمنا لاحقاً كيف هربت غاديس: ألقت بقصاصة ورق من الشرفة على الرصيف في الأسفل طالبة المساعدة. أحال أحدهم الرسالة إلى منظمة “كفى” التي أرسلت الشرطة.
ومع ذلك، لم تنته المهمة. لقد تم إبلاغ “هذا لبنان” بوضع “توابيش وودي فانتو”، شقيقة غاديس. تعمل توابيش لدى روي أبو فرح وزوجته منال عواد (39 عاماً). روي وروزين شقيقان، لكن حسب قول روزين، هي وروي لا يتكلمان مع بعضهما. وفي أيار، تمكنت توابيش من الاتصال بأسرتها من هاتف استعارته من إثيوبية أخرى التقت بها عندما كانت برفقة أصحاب العمل خارج المنزل – وكانت أول مكالمة لها منذ عامين. لم تحصل على أجرها منذ سنوات، ويجبرها روي على البقاء لمدة عام آخر. تتعرض للتعنيف الجسدي. وقد تم استعبادها فعلياً في منزل روي ومنال. غاديس وعائلتها في غاية القلق على توابيش.
اتصل “هذا لبنان” بروي مرات عديدة ولكن من دون أي رد على الإطلاق. كما أرسلنا له رسالة نصية دون أي استجابة. ندعو السلطات اللبنانية إلى التحرك وإنقاذ توابيش، لضمان حصولها على راتبها المستحق وإعادتها سالمة إلى وطنها.

ምንም እንኳ የአካል ጥቃት ባይሆንም የፊ ደመወዝ በመያዙ በቲአይኤል ጣልቃ መግባት ወደ ፊሊፒንስ ዶላር 4,000.00 ጥሬ ገንዘብ ይዛ ተመልሳለች፡፡ በመጨረሻ ሙሉ ክፍያ ተፈጽሞላታል፡፡

THE STORY
Life in Sierra Leone was hard for Isha Sankoh. Orphaned at a young age and raised by siblings, she had to leave school and do odd jobs to help the family. Eventually Isha resorted to working as a miner, an uncommon choice for women there. Isha proudly tells how she grew strong through that physically rigorous job.
Having been told she could double her salary for lighter work in Lebanon, Isha paid $500 to an agent in Sierra Leone, who organized her travel to Beirut in June, 2019. There she was assigned by Lebanese agent Bilal Khalil to a family who was nice enough to her, allowed her some contact with her family, and fed her well. But Isha needed medical help, and the family was unwilling to pay for Isha’s medical expenses, so they sent her back to the agency.
The agency re-assigned her to a family with three children. They were even kinder, offered her more, and even invited her to join them at church and for shopping. They also paid for Isha to have the operation she needed. But Isha did not recover well, and realized she was unable to continue work. After discussing the matter with her, Isha’s employer sent her back to the agency, paid her the $600 she was owed for her salary, and told the agent Isha needed to be sent home for her family to take care of her.
Suddenly working in the mines was a delight compared to her current situation. Bilal Khalil took everything she owned: her phone and her $600 salary. Although she was in pain and her large, stapled surgical wound was infected, Khalil refused to buy her the prescribed medicine, offering only whatever pills he had on hand.

Her captor beat her, kicked her near her incision and insulted her. He gave her the dilemma between either working or paying 6000$ to go back home.
There were several other women at the agency: some had been there for months, many had been beaten, none had been properly fed, and some were handcuffed. Describing her fear of dying at the agency, Isha said:
“I know they were able [to kill], because I witnessed a girl who was locked up with us die. She was an Ethiopian girl we called Lulu”
“Lulu was beaten every day. She was always handcuffed. She coughed blood and was badly bruised. One day, we noticed she was no longer moving. Police came to look into the death. Bilal warned us that if any of us told the police that he had killed someone, we would be next. So I didn’t say anything. But I was scared. It was the worst time of my life. I even thought about committing suicide.”
One imprisoned woman had managed to smuggle in a phone, though it was soon taken away. Isha seized the opportunity and contacted her sister, who asked for help from This Is Lebanon on January 19. The next day, the agent told This Is Lebanon that Isha had received all her rights, had money in hand, and would be going home as soon as the paperwork was done. He claimed, “She cheated us because she came ill. We paid for it all. She is not entitled to be paid by the insurance company because she had an old illness. We did all the necessary things.” Isha did not return home.
Despite his consistent abuse of African women, Bilal Khalil had an Ethiopian girlfriend who helped him out at the agency and was well aware of the circumstances the other women lived in. According to Isha, the girlfriend was nicknamed “China,” and did everything from administrative work to taking his calls.
This Is Lebanon found a means to communicate with Isha, hear her story, and work for her repatriation. Bilal Khalil was briefly in jail at the time, under investigation for the murder of Lulu. He was soon released. In the meantime, Ghassan Khalil, Bilal’s father, told This Is Lebanon that the agency had no obligation to pay for Isha’s medical expenses, but had paid for her operation because of their “personal feelings.” He claimed the $600 he had taken was money owed by Isha to the agency for being sick and not working. “We’ve lost money on her. She is living and eating here. We’re running a business here.” This Is Lebanon, he said, should have bought Isha’s air ticket if they were concerned.
This Is Lebanon persisted. It was the agency’s obligation to buy the ticket and return Isha’s salary which she needed to get to her hometown and start again. To avoid additional negative repercussions, the agency sent Isha home in mid-March 2020 with $200 of her $600 salary hoping This Is Lebanon would forget about the remaining.
Isha warns others against working in Lebanon:
“What happens there isn’t supposed to happen to human beings. There are many African girls who are suffering and dying there. You won’t lose your life or your freedom if you stay home”

كانت الحياة في سيراليون صعبة على “إيشا سانكوه”. و لأنها تيتّمت في سن مبكرة و قام إخوتها بتربيتها، كان عليها أن تترك المدرسة وأن تقوم بأعمال غريبة من نوعها لمساعدة الأسرة. في النهاية لجأت إيشا إلى العمل في منجم، لتكون واحدة من عدد قليل جداً من النساء في المنجم. تخبرنا إيشا بفخر كيف أنها أصبحت قوية من خلال قيامها بهذا العمل الجسدي الشاق.
بعد أن سمعت بإمكانية مضاعفة راتبها بعمل أقل جهداً في لبنان، دفعت إيشا 500 دولار إلى وكيل في سيراليون، الذي رتب سفرها إلى بيروت في حزيران 2019. هناك تم تعيينها من قبل الوكيل اللبناني بلال خليل لدى عائلة كانت لطيفة تماماً معها، وسمحت لها بالتواصل مع عائلتها إلى حد مقبول، وقدمت لها غذاء جيداً. لكن إيشا كانت بحاجة إلى مساعدة طبية، ولم تكن الأسرة مستعدة لدفع نفقاتها الطبية، لذلك أعادوها إلى الوكالة.
قامت الوكالة بإعادة تعيينها في منزل أسرة لديها ثلاثة أطفال. وكانوا أكثر لطفاً معها، يغذّونها جيداً، ويسمحون لها بالاتصال أكثر مع عائلتها، و يدعونها لمرافقتهم إلى الكنيسة وأثناء التسوق. كما دفعوا لها كلفة إجراء العملية التي كانت تحتاجها. لكن إيشا لم تستردّ عافيتها سالمة، وأدركت أنها غير قادرة على مواصلة العمل. وبعد مناقشة الأمر معها، أعادها صاحب العمل إلى الوكالة، ودفع لها رواتبها المستحقة، مقدار 600 دولار، وأخبر الوكيل بأنه يلزم إعادة إيشا إلى بلدها لتعتني بها عائلتها.
فجأة أصبحت الحياة أسوأ من العمل في المناجم. لقد أخذ بلال خليل هاتفها، وراتبها 600 دولار الذي كان كل ما تملك. وعلى الرغم من آلامها و التهاب جرح العملية الكبير، رفض خليل شراء الدواء الموصوف لها، و قدم لها أية حبوب في متناول يده.
وجدت إيشا نفسها محبوسة في غرفة بلا نوافذ، تنام على مفرش إسفنجي رقيق على الأرضية الباردة.
و قام “سجّانها” بضربها وإذلالها وركلها بالقرب من مكان الشق الجراحي. قال لها بأنه عليها إما أن تعمل أو تدفع 6000 دولار للعودة إلى بلادها.
كانت هناك عدة نساء أخريات في الوكالة: بعضهن منذ شهور، وتعرضت كثيرات منهن للضرب، ولم يتم إطعام أي منهن على نحو لائق، و أخريات كنّ مكبلات اليدين. قالت إيشا وهي تصف خوفها من الموت في الوكالة:
«أعرف أنهم كانوا قادرين على [القتل]، لأنني رأيت فتاة محبوسة معنا وهي تموت. كانت فتاة إثيوبية نسميها “لولو”.
تعرضت لولو للضرب كل يوم. وكانت دائماً مكبلة اليدين. كانت تسعل دماً ومصابة بكدمات شديدة. ذات يوم، لاحظنا أنها لم تعد تتحرك. جاءت الشرطة للتحقيق في أمر الوفاة. فحذّرنا بلال من أنه إذا أخبرت إحدانا الشرطة بأنه قتل شخصاً، فستكون هي التالية. لذلك لم أقل شيئاً. لكنني كنت خائفة. لقد كانت أسوأ فترة عشتها في حياتي. حتى إنني فكرت في الانتحار».
تمكنت امرأة تشاركهنّ السجن من تهريب هاتف إلى الداخل، مع أنه سرعان ما تم أخذه منها. اغتنمت إيشا الفرصة واتصلت بشقيقتها، التي لجأت للمساعدة بالاتصال بجمعية “هذا لبنان” في 19 كانون الثاني. وفي اليوم التالي، أخبر الوكيل “هذا لبنان” أن إيشا حصلت على جميع حقوقها، وتحمل معها نقوداً، وستعود إلى ديارها بمجرد الانتهاء من تجهيز الأوراق. وزعم قائلاً: «لقد خدعتنا لأنها جاءت إلينا مريضة. لقد دفعنا كلفة ذلك كله. فلا يحق لها أن تدفع لها شركة التأمين لأنها كانت تعاني من مرض قديم. قمنا بكل الأمور اللازمة». لكن إيشا لم تعد إلى بلدها.
وجد “هذا لبنان” وسيلة للتواصل مع إيشا، والاستماع إلى قصتها، والعمل على إعادتها إلى الوطن. حينها كان بلال خليل في السجن لفترة وجيزة، قيد التحقيق بتهمة قتل لولو. أُطلِق سراحه بعد وقت قصير. في غضون ذلك، أخبر غسان خليل، والد بلال، “هذا لبنان” أن الوكالة ليست ملزمة بدفع نفقات إيشا الطبية، لكنها دفعت ثمن عمليتها بسبب “موقفهم النبيل”. وادّعى أن مبلغ الـستمائة دولار الذي أخذه كانت إيشا تدين به للوكالة بسبب مرضها وتوقفها عن العمل. «لقد أنفقنا الكثير من المال عليها. إنها تعيش وتأكل هنا. نحن ندير عملنا هنا». وقال بأن على جمعية “هذا لبنان” أن يشتروا تذكرة طيران إيشا إذا كانوا قلقين على أمرها.
واظب “هذا لبنان” في مساعيه. لقد كان من واجب الوكالة شراء التذكرة وإعادة راتب إيشا الذي كانت تحتاجه للوصول إلى مسقط رأسها والبدء من جديد. لكن لعدم رغبتهم في مزيد من الإشهار السلبي في تلك اللحظة المشينة من تاريخهم، أرسلت الوكالة إيشا إلى وطنها في منتصف آذار 2020 مع 200 دولار من راتبها البالغ 600 دولار. ويبدو أن الوكالة كانت تأمل بأن ينسى “هذا لبنان” أمر المبلغ المتبقي والبالغ 400 دولار. هذا مُستبعَد!
تحذّر إيشا الأخريات من العمل في لبنان:
من غير المفترض أن يحدث لأي بشر ما يحصل هناك. ثمة العديد من الفتيات الأفريقيات يتعذّبن ويلقين حتفهنّ هناك. لن تخسري حياتكِ أو حريتكِ إذا بقيتِ في وطنكِ

በምዕራብ አፍሪካ ሲየራ ሊዮን ሃገር ተወላጅ የሆነችው ኢሻ ሳንኮህ በልጅነቷ ነበር ወላጆችዋን ያጣቸው። ታላቅ እህቶችና ወንድሞችዋ የኑሮ ውድነትና ችግርን እየተጋፈጡ ኢሻን አሳድጓታል። ኢሻህ አደግ ስትል ቤተሰቦቿን ለመርዳት ወስና የማዕደን ቁፈራ ስራ ትጀምራለች። በማእድን ስራ ማግኘቱ ለሴት ልጅ ብርቅ መሆኑን የምትገልጸው ኢሻ ስራው ጠንካራ እንዳደረጋትም ታስረዳለች።
ደሞዟ እጅግ በጣም ዝቅተኛ በመሆኑ ታላቅ ወንድም እህቶቿን የማገልገል አቅሟ ውስን ነበር። ስለሆነም ወደ ሊባኖስ ተሰድዳ በሰው ቤት ሰራተኝነት ለመቀጠር ወሰነች። በሲየራ ሊዮን ለሚንቀሳቀስ ደላላ 500 የአሜሪካ ዶላር ከፍላ በሰኔ 2011 ወደ ሊባኖስ ዋና ከተማ ቤሩት ትበራለች። ሊባኖስ እንደገባች አንድ ቢላል ኻሊል የተሰኘ ደላላ በቤሩት ከተማ ስራ ያገኝላታል። ኢሻ እንደምትለው አሰሪዎቿ ጥሩ ሰዎች የነበሩ ቢሆንም ኢሻ በገጠማት የጤና ችግርና አሰሪዎቿ የህክምና ወጪዎቿን መሸፈን ባለመፈለጋቸው ስራዋን አቋርጣ ወደ ደላላዋ ቢሮ ተመለሰች።
ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊል ወደ ሌላ ቤት አዘዋወዋት። ኢሻ ሶስት ልጆች ባሉበት ቤት ተቀጥራ መስራት ጀመረች። አዲሶቹ አሰሪዎቿ ደግሞ እጅግ በጣም ደግ ከመሆናቸው የተነሳ የህክምና ወጪዎቿን ሸፍነው አሳከሟት። እሁድ እሁድ አብረዋቸው ወደ ቤተ ክርስትያንም እንድሄድም ፈቀዱላት። ኢሻ በቤቱ ደስተኛ ብትሆንም የጤናዋ ሁኔታ ሊሻሻል ባለመቻሉ ምክንያት ስራውን መቀጠል አልቻለችም። አሰሪዎቿ የደሞዟ 600 ዶላር አስረክበውላት ወደ ደላላው ቢሮ ተላከች። አሰሪዎቿ ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊልን አግኝተውት ኢሻ ወደ ሃገሯ ተልካ ህክምናዋን መከታተል እንዳለባት አማከሩት።
ይሄንን ሲነገረው ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊል እጅግ በጣም ይበሳጫል። ኢሻን በደብደብ፤ በእርግጫ መምታትና መሳደብንም ጀመረ። የእጅ ስልኳንና የተሰጣት 600 ዶላር ደሞዟንም ቀማት። ኢሻ በከባድ ህመም ላይ ነበረች። አልፎ አልፎ በቢሮዉ የነበሩት ኪኒኖች እየሰጣት ወደ ሆስፒታል መሄዱን ከለከላት። በቢሮዉ የሚገኝ አንዲት መስኮት የሌለው ክፍል ውስጥ ተቀምጣ በር ተቆልፎባት መሄጃ አጣች። አብረዋት የቢሮዉ እስረኛ ሆነው ለወራት የተቀመጡ ከኢትዮጵያ ከጋና ከስሪ ላንካ የመጡ ሌሎች ስደተኞች ነበሩ። ቢላል ኻሊል እያንዳንዳቸውን እየደበደበ እየቀጠቀጠ ያሰቃይ የነበረ ሲሆን በካቴና ታስረው የተቀመጡና ለቀናት ሳይበሉ ተርበው ይቀመጡ የነበሩት ሴቶችም ጭምር አንደነበሩ ኢሻ ታካፍለናለች። ታጉረው ለተቀመጡት ስደተኞች የ6000 ዶላር ቅጣት ከከፈሉ ብቻ እንደሚለቀቁ ቢላል ኻሊል ይነግራችዋል።
ኢሻ ለህይወቷ መስጋት ጀመረች። “ከተወሰነ ቀናት ቦኋላ ደላላዬ እኔን ከመግደል ወደ ኋላ የሚል አይነት ሰው እንዳነበረ መረዳት ቻልኩ” ብላ አስረድታናለች ኢሻ። “እዛ በተቀመጥንበት አንዲት ሉሉ የምትባል ኢትዮጵያዊት ተዋውቄ ነበር። ሉሉ ላይ እጅግ በጣም ዘግናኝ ድብደባ ይፈጸምባት ነበር በየቀኑ። ደላላው እጆቿን እግሮቿን አሣስረው በትክክል መተንፈስም አቃታት። ሰውነቷ ቁስል በቁስል ሆኖ ሁሌ ደም ትተፋ ነበር። አንድ ቀን እዛው በተቀመጥንበት መንቀሳቀሱን አቆመች። ሉሉ ስትሞት የከተማ ፖሊስ መጥተው ጎበኙን። ከመምጣታቸው በፊት ለፖሊስ አንዲት ነገር የተነፈሰ ይገደላል ብሎ ዛተብን ቢላል ኻሊል። ስለዚህ ፈርቼ ዝም አልኩ። በህይወቴ መፈጠሬን የጠላሁበት ሰሞን ነበር። እራሴን ስለማጥፋት ሁሉ ማሰብ ጀመርኩ።”
ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊል እጅግ በጣም ጨካኝ አረመኔና በቤቱ በነበሩት አፍሪካውያን እስያውያን ሴቶች አሰቃቂ ግፍ ይፈጽም የነበረ ቢሆንም ሰውየው አንዲት “ቻይና” ተብላ የምትጠራ ኢትዮጵያዊት ፍቅረኛ እንደነበረው መረዳት ቻልን። አልፎ አልፎ ቢሮ እየመጣች እንደምታገለግለው ኢሻ አካፍላናለች። ለግዜው የቻይና ማንነት አልደረስንበትም።
በዚህ ሁኔታ ውስጥ በታጎሩበት አንዲት ተጨማሪ ስደተኛ ትቀላቀላችዋለች። ልጅታዋ ስልኳ የተቀማቸው በሁለተኛዋ ቀን ስለነበር በአንደኛው ቀን ኢሻ አጋጣሚውን ተጠቅማ ወደ እህቷ ደውላ ስለሁኔታዋ ያለውን ሁሉ ታስረዳታለች።
ቀጥሎ የኢሻ እህት ትብብራችን ፍለጋ ወደ “ይህ ነው ሊባኖስ” ደውላ እርዳታችን ጠየቀች። ከጥር 2012 ዓም ጀምሮ ይህ ነው ሊባኖስ የኢሻን ጉዳይ መከታተል ጀመረ።
ወደ ደላላው ቢሮ በመደወል ስልክ የመለሱትን በቢሮዉ እየተከሰተ ስላለው ድርጊት ሁሉን ማወቃችን አስረዳናቸው። ቢላል ኻሊል ገመናው ወጥቶ ተቋማችን ጋር በመድረሱ ተደናግጦ ኢሻ በቅርብ ቀን ገንዘቧን ይዛ ወደ ሃገሯ እንደምትመለስና ነገረን። እንደ እስረኛ ተቀምጣ መሰቃየቷ ምክንያቱ ምንድነው ብለን ጠየቅነው።
“ኢሻ አጭበርብራናለች!” ብሎ ምላሽ ሰጠን። “ከሃገሯ ስትመጣ ታምማ ነበር። እዚህ እንድመጣ ወጪ አውጥተን ከጤናዋ ምክንያት ከሁለት ወር በላይ እንኳን አንድ ቤት ተቀምጣ መስራት አትችልም ነበር። የተከፈላት ገንዘብ አይገባትም! አጭበርባሪ ናት!”
ትንሽ ቆይቶ ቢላል በስልኩ ከኛ ቢሮ የሚደውልለት ሁሉ ብሎክ በማድረግ እራሱን ለማሰወር ሞከረ። ቢላል ቃሉን አልጠበቀም፤ ኢሻም አልተለቀቀችም።
የሟቿ ኢትዮጵያዊት ሉሉ አገዳደልን የመረመረው የሊባኖስ ፖሊስ ለተወሰነ ቀናት ቢላል ኻሊልን አሳስረውት ነበር። እንደተለመደው በሰው ቤት ሰራተኞች መሞት ለፍርድ የሚቀርብ ሰው ጠፋ፤ ቢላል ያለምንም ቅጣት ከእስራት ተፈትቶ ወደ ስራው ተመለሰ።
በዚህ ግዜ ይህ ነው ሊባኖስ የአባቱ ጋሳን ኻሊል ቁጥር አፈላልፈን አገኘነው። ለአባትየው ያለው ሁኔታ አስረዳንና በኢሻ ጉዳይ ለቀቅ እንደማናደርጋቸውም ነገርነው። 600 ዶላር ከሷ ስለ መስረቃቸው አንስተንለት “ልጄ ኢሻን ስራ ለማስገባት ሞክሮ በመታመሟ ምክንያት ቢሮ አስቀጣት እያኖራት ነው ያለው። በነጻ እኛ ቢሮ ተቀምጣ እየበላች እየተኛች 600 ዶላርዋን ብንወስደው ምንድነው ጉዳቱ?” ብለው ምላሽ ሰጡን።
ከብዙ ግፊት ቦኋላ ለአባትየው ያለውን ነገር ካልፈትቱ ሙሉ ታሪኩ ከነፎቶዋቸው ከ120 ሺህ በላይ ተከታይ ባለው የፌስቡክ ገጻችን ላይ እንደምንለጥፈው ገለጽንለት። ጉዳዪ በመላው ሊባኖስ መነጋገርያ እንደሚሆን ሲረዱት አባት ልጁን አሳምኖ ለኢሻ የአየር ቲኬት ቆርጠውላት ወደ ሃገሯ ተመለሰች። ከ600 ዶላሩ 200 ዶላርን ብቻ መለሱላት።
ኢሻ ከነነፍሷ ወደ ሃገሯ በመመለሷ ደስተኛ ብትሆንም በቢሮዉ ጥላቸው ለሄዱት እህቶቿ በየቀኑ እንደምታስብላቸው ነገረችን።
“በሊባኖስ ያለው ሁኔታ በጣም መጥፎ ነው። ብዙ አፍሪካዊ እህቶቼ እየተሰቃዩ እየተገደሉ ነው ያሉት። ስራ ፍለጋ ወደ ሊባኖስ እንዳትሄዱ። ትልቅ ስህተት ነበር የሰራሁት።
በይህ ነው ሊባኖስ ያለን ሁሉ እስካሁን ድረስ በቢሮዋ የሞተችዋና ሉሉ ተብላ የምትጠራ የነበረችዋ ኢትዮጵያዊት ማንነት ልናውቀው አልቻልንም። ሉሉ ማን ልትሆን እንደምትችል ለምታውቁ በውስጥ መስመር መጥታችሁ ታሪኳን በማካፈል የእህታችን ሞት ተቀብሮ እንዳይቀር ተረባረቡላት።
