Hear Rispa’s Story About Her Experience in Lebanon
THE STORY
Rispa Gichoya, a Kenyan national, contacted This is Lebanon in April 2021 because she had finished her 2 year contract but her employers were unwilling to send her home and her passport had expired.
She wrote:
“I am in dire need of going home. The worst thing is, our salary is reduced, I hate this place like never before! Am sick and tired. I don’t know what to think anymore, I don’t know how to feel anymore.”
This is Lebanon contacted her employers who immediately secured her temporary travel documents and bought her ticket home. She arrived in Kenya in May, 2021 and wrote:

اتصلت ريسبا غيشويا، وهي مواطنة من كينيا، بجمعية “هذا لبنان” في نيسان 2021 إذ كانت قد أنهت عقدها الذي مدته سنتان، لكن أصحاب العمل لم يرغبوا بإرسالها إلى بلدها، وكانت صلاحية جواز سفرها قد انتهت.
كتبت لنا:
“إني بحاجة ماسة للعودة إلى وطني. وأسوأ ما في الأمر هو أن رواتبنا أصبحت أقلّ، وأنا أكره هذا المكان أكثر من أي وقت مضى! إني مريضة ومتعبة. لم أعد أعرف بماذا أفكر.. ولم أعد أدري كيف أشعر”.
اتصل “هذ لبنان” بأصحاب العمل الذين أمّنوا لها على الفور وثائق سفر مؤقتة، واشتروا تذكرة عودتها إلى الوطن. وصلت إلى كينيا في أيار 2021، وكتبت:
“إني ممتنة للغاية. والفرح الذي في داخلي لا يقاس.”

Rodelyn Dollete is owed two months salary worth $600 by the Saniour Family
THE STORY
In September 2020, Rodelyn Dollete, a former Migrant Domestic Worker from The Philippines, contacted our casework team asking for help reclaiming unpaid salary from her former employers.
Whilst she was in Lebanon, Rodelyn worked for the Saniour family. When her contract was finished, Rodelyn decided she wanted to return home to be with her family and on August 2nd 2020 she left the Saniour’s house but was not paid her last two months wages.

We attempted to contact Nadine Saniour on behalf of Rodelyn to get a better understanding of the situation, but she was not willing to engage with us. Instead Ms Saniour’s lawyer contacted us, he said:
“[Rodelyn] cheated the office in Manila and the employer in Lebanon, she is very short and has health problems. This wasn’t mentioned in the contract and [Rodelyn] added fake photos to the CV.”
We asked Rodelyn about these accusations, she told us that she has no health issues at all and underwent a health screening before she arrived in Lebanon. Rodelyn also told us that she is 4’11” which is the average height for a Filipino woman. Rodelyn worked for the Saniour’s since 2018 so it makes little sense why this only became an issue after Rodelyn finished her contract.
Rodelyn has not heard anything further from her former employer Nadine Saniour. We hope that Ms. Saniour will do the right thing and pay her former employee the $600 salary she is still owed and we will keep this page updated if there are any developments in this case.
Unfortunately, Rodelyn is just one of many thousands of women who have suffered wage theft under the Kafala system and in the absence of any fair justice system in Lebanon, we will continue to fight for workers like her.

Watch Selina Boardiwaa Tell of Her Experiences with This Is Lebanon
THE STORY
Selina Boadiwaa, a 24 year old Ghanaian domestic worker, hadn’t been paid for 16 months and was owed $3200. Her employer had only ever paid her 3 months’ salary.
She did not know who to contact or what to do as she lived in a very isolated village deep in the south of Lebanon, had no phone and did not have a Facebook account.
Thankfully, she was creative and determined and was able to make contact with This Is Lebanon using her madam’s phone and Instagram account. Initially, we were a bit confused why a Lebanese woman was contacting us for help!
After getting contact details for Selina’s family we reached out to her brother and then contacted her employers on his behalf.
Selina’s employer was unlike any we’d contacted before, she was crying on the phone and expressing sorrow over the non-payment.
Together with Selina, we negotiated a settlement and bought her a ticket home. Less than a month after contacting This Is Lebanon, Selina arrived safely back in Ghana.
Selina said:
“This Is Lebanon wiped my tears when I was helpless. They helped me get my rights and find my money. They are the best.”

سيلينا بواديوا، عاملة منزلية من غانا وتبلغ من العمر 24 عاماً، لم تحصل على أجرها مدة 16 شهراً ويدينون لها بمبلغ 3200 دولار. كان صاحب العمل قد دفع لها راتب 3 أشهر فقط.
لم تكن تعلم بمن تتصل أو ماذا تفعل لأنها تعيش في قرية منعزلة للغاية في قلب جنوب لبنان، وليس لديها هاتف وليس لديها حساب على فيسبوك.
لحسن الحظ، كانت مبدعة وذات عزم ثابت فتمكنت من التواصل مع “هذا لبنان” باستخدام هاتف سيدتها وحساب إنستغرام. في البداية، كنا في حيرة من أمرنا قليلاً بسبب اتصال امرأة لبنانية بنا لطلب المساعدة.
وبعد الحصول على معلومات الاتصال الخاصة بعائلة سيلينا، تواصلنا مع شقيقها ثم اتصلنا بأصحاب العمل نيابة عنه.
كانت صاحبة عمل سيلينا مختلفة عن أي شخص اتصلنا به من قبل؛ فقد راحت تبكي على الهاتف وتعرب عن أسفها لعدم الدفع.
وبالمشاركة مع سيلينا، قمنا بالتفاوض إلى أن توصلنا إلى تسوية واشترينا لها تذكرة العودة إلى بلدها. بعد الاتصال بـ “هذا لبنان” بأقل من شهر، عادت سيلينا سالمة إلى غانا.
قالت سيلينا:
“جمعية هذا لبنان مسحوا دموعي حين كنت بائسة. لقد ساعدوني في الحصول على حقوقي وعلى أموالي. إنهم الأفضل.”

THE STORY
Hannah Ogundele’s mother contacted This Is Lebanon fearing for her 24 year old daughter. Hannah moved to Lebanon in August 2019 and works for the famous radio host and TV presenter, Nisrine Zawahra Daher. Despite being a public figure she still refuses to pay her domestic worker. Hannah has not received fair treatment during her time in Lebanon with her hard-earned salary from the past five months withheld by Nisrine.
As well as this, Hannah has had her phone confiscated making her unable to contact her family at a time when her mother has informed us of the death of Hannah’s sister. Hannah’s mother also informed us that Hannah has been denied adequate food and made to work long unpaid hours. “No time for her to rest, she work as a slave, she cry always, no place for her to be sleeping , she work till 1.30 am.”
When This Is Lebanon reached out to Nisrine, first via her Twitter account and later by phone, she hung up on us and has yet to respond to our subsequent messages. Nisrine has broken the contract* by not paying her for 5 months and we are calling on her to pay Hannah and send her home. Immediately.
*According to the Ministry of Labour a domestic worker “can terminate the contract with your employer in case your salary is not paid or underpaid for 3 consecutive months.”
UPDATE: October 29, 2020
Moments after publishing, but shortly before publicizing this story, Nisrine Zawahra replied to us on Twitter. She declined to send the receipts. Instead, she believes she can speak on behalf of Hannah and that Hannah “doesn’t want to send her money.” Evidently, Hannah must also not want proper sleep or adequate food, and we must presume that it was her choice not to talk to her mother or children since June. Of course none of those are her choices. Her choices were taken away by Nisrine Zawahra as another abusive employer in the Kafala system.
UPDATE: October 30, 2020
While Nisrine previously dealt with the situation as if she was completely unconcerned by hanging up on our phone call and telling us “post I don’t care,” she seems to have a changed perspective after we brought Hannah’s case and her abuses to the spotlight.
Our ask is simple to employers who are holding the worker in forced labour: pay her and send her home. A big name, government power and money might protect Nisrine or other employers like her in Lebanon, but This Is Lebanon is dedicated to fighting for workers regardless of the how powerful or average their employer.

Hannah Forced into False Testimony
In an attempt at defending herself, Nisrine posts a series of videos in which she forces Hannah to give false testimony and humiliate herself jumping around the camera. Throughout the video, she leads Hannah to claim that all is good and fine. She smiles and waves her hands around because she loves Nisrine so much and they are having such a great time together!
Nisrine knows so little about Hannah’s personal life, that she forgot Hannah was from Nigeria and not Ghana. As Hannah acts out the parts that Nisrine scripted, Hannah says that, “when i finish my one year i will go to Ghana,” a place she has never been, nor does she have family there.
This is a similar tactic that we saw in our very first case in mid-2017 with Halima when Ibtissam Alsaadi’s family posted videos of Halima with big smiles and laughs. After Halima returned to the Philippines, she testified that around that time she had heard the family in the living room discussing whether it was more strategic to murder her and hide the body or return her to the Philippines. Fortunately they chose the latter.
Nisrine did make one truthful correction in her attempt to change the narrative. The woman in the original video begging for Hannah’s release is not her mother. She is Ruth, Hannah’s aunt. Hannah’s mother, Esther, does not speak English, so her mother elected for Hannah’s aunt to speak on her behalf.
In response to Nisrine, Hannah’s entire family made a video with her mother, aunt, three year-old daughter and five year-old son. In a follow-up call, they maintained that everything they have said is true and that Hannah is under intense pressure to give false testimony. When Ruth first contacted us, she alleged that Hannah had told her mom on a previous phone call earlier this year, “Mummy, my boss want to kill me.”
Hannah’s Family Refutes Nisrine’s Deflection
Is it that Hannah loves Nisrine so much she has abandoned her family and children or that Nisrine has denied them contact for months as she enslaves and tortures her? Nisrine needs to hand Hannah over to the embassy with her salary and a plane ticket so she can be reunited with those she truly loves.
UPDATE: October 30, 2020
As the videos released on social media began to go viral in Lebanon, Al Jadeed decided to host an interview with Nisrine and presenter Tony Khalife speaking to one of ThisIsLebanon’s Founders in an attempt to clear Nisrine’s name.
The channel has previously hosted similar interviews with a bias towards defending abusive employers as was seen with the case of Lensa Tufa, an Ethopian Migrant Worker, who was paraded around on live TV whilst still lying in her hospital bed, and forced to announce that her initial statement that she had been abused was ‘a lie’. The show met great criticism from rights groups insisting that such display of statements under clear duress were unlikely to be true and pressured from employers.
The same tactics were used in the case of Hannah with her Aunt and family insisting that Hannah was speaking falsely and most likely pressured by her employer, Nisrine, to make false allegations that she was alright and very happy.
In the interview on Al Jadeed, the presenter’s repeatedly spoke over This Is Lebanon staff and failed to allow them to make the case against Nisrine who continuously interrupts even her own colleague. In a display of true unprofessionalism, Tony Khalife goes on to break a request for privacy agreed upon beforehand, and insist that our staff reveal their identities on live TV fully aware of the risks that our staff face from Lebanese General Security and Internal Security Forces.

This Is Lebanon, receives a message from Hannah’s Aunt informing us that Hannah has had her phone returned to her by Nisrine and that This Is Lebanon should not remove the videos highlighting the story of Hannah in order to keep the pressure on Nisrine to purchase her ticket home.

Hannah arrives safely back to her home and family in Nigeria with her full salary. Her sister tells us that her own children did not even recognise her as she had been away for so long.

نسرين ظواهرة: نجمة قناة الجديد
اتصلت إحدى أقارب هانا أوغوندلي بجمعية “هذا لبنان” بسبب خوفها على قريبتها أثناء وجودها في لبنان. انتقلت هانا إلى لبنان في آب 2019 وعملت لدى مقدمة البرامج التلفزيونية، نسرين ظواهرة ضاهر. وعلى الرغم من كونها شخصية مشهورة، فهي ترفض أن تدفع لعاملة المنزل التي لديها. لم تلقَ هانا معاملة مُنصفة في لبنان خاصةً أنها لم تقبض راتبها في الأشهر الخمسة السابقة.
بالإضافة الى هذا، تمت مصادرة هاتف هانا مما جعلها غير قادرة على الاتصال بأسرتها في الوقت الذي أبلغتنا فيه والدتها بوفاة شقيقة هانا. كما أبلغتنا فيه قريبتها أن هانا حُرمت من تناول طعام يكفيها وقد أُجبرت على العمل لساعات طويلة بدون أجر. «لا وقت لها للراحة، إنها تعمل كعبدة، تبكي دائماً، ولا مكان لها لتنام فيه، فهي تعمل حتى الساعة 1.30 فجراً».
عندما تواصل “هذا لبنان” مع نسرين، عبر حسابها على “تويتر” أولاً ثم عبر الهاتف، أقفلت الخط ولم تردّ على رسائلنا اللاحقة. لقد خرقت نسرين العقد* بعدم الدفع لها مدة 3 أشهر ونحن نطالبها بأن تدفع لعاملتها هانا وترسلها إلى بلدها فوراً.
*وفقاً لوزارة العمل، يمكن للعاملة المنزلية “إنهاء العقد مع صاحب العمل في حالة عدم دفع راتبكِ أو أقلّ من راتبك
مدة 3 أشهر متتالية”.

بعد لحظات من نشر هذه القصة، ولكن قبل تعميمها بوقت قصير، ردت علينا نسرين ظواهرة عبر تويتر. لقد رفضت إرسال الإيصالات. وبدلاً من ذلك، فهي تعتقد أنه بإمكانها التحدث نيابة عن هانا وأن هانا “لا تريد إرسال أموالها”. وكأنه لا بدّ أن هانا لا تريد أيضاً مكاناً لائقاً للنوم أو طعاماً كافياً. وعلينا أن نفترض أنها هي التي قررت عدم التحدث إلى والدتها أو أطفالها منذ حزيران. بالطبع لم تكن تلك خياراتها. لقد سلبت نسرين ظواهرة حقها في الاختيار باعتبارها صاحبة عمل استغلالية أخرى في نظام الكفالة.

رغم أن نسرين تعاملت سابقاً مع الموقف كما لو أنها غير مبالية كليّاً وذلك بإنهاء المكالمة الهاتفية وقولها “انشروا، لا يهمني”، يبدو أنها تغير وجهة نظرها بعد أن كشفنا قضية هانا وإساءة معاملتها تحت الأضواء.
طلبُنا بسيط لأصحاب العمل الذين يحتجزون العاملة في عمل السّخرة: ادفعوا لها ثم أرسلوها إلى بلدها.قد يحمي المال وشهرة الاسم وسلطة الحكومة نسرين أو أرباب العمل الآخرين مثلها في لبنان، لكن جمعية “هذا لبنان” مكرّسة للدفاع عن العاملات بغض النظر إذا كان صاحب العمل عادياً أم ذا نفوذ

نسرين أجبرت حنة على شهادة زور
.في محاولة للدفاع عن نفسها، نشرت نسرين سلسلة من الفيديوهات تجبر فيها هانا على الإدلاء بشهادة زور وإذلال نفسها وهي تقفز حول الكاميرا. طوال الفيديو، دفعت هانا إلى الادعاء بأن كل شيء على ما يرام.
راحت تبتسم وتلوح بيديها لأنها تحب نسرين كثيراً وهما يقضيان وقتاً رائعاً معاً!لا تعرف نسرين الكثير عن حياة هانا الشخصية، لدرجة أنها نسيت أن هانا كانت من نيجيريا وليس من غانا. بينما كانت تقوم هانا بتمثيل المقاطع التي لقّنتها إياها نسرين، تقول هانا: «عندما أنهي سنتي الأولى سأذهب إلى غانا»، وهو مكان لم تقم بزيارته مطلقاً، وليس لديها عائلة هناك.
هذا أسلوب شبيه بالذي رأيناه في قضيتنا الأولى في منتصف عام 2017 مع حليمة عندما نشرت عائلة ابتسام السعدي مقاطع فيديو لحليمة بابتسامات وضحكات كبيرة. بعد أن عادت حليمة إلى الفلبين، شهدت بأنها في ذلك الوقت تقريباً سمعت العائلة في غرفة الجلوس تناقش أيهما يحقق غايتهم أكثر، قتلها وإخفاء جثتها أم إعادتها إلى الفلبين. ولحسن الحظ كان خيارهم هو الثاني.
قامت نسرين بتصحيح واحد حقيقي في محاولتها تغيير الرواية. المرأة في الفيديو الأصلي التي تتوسل لإطلاق سراح هانا ليست والدتها. إنها روث، عمة هانا. فوالدة هانا، إستر، لا تتكلم الإنجليزية، لذلك طلبت من عمة هانا أن تتحدث نيابة عنها.
رداً على نسرين، قامت عائلة هانا بأكملها بتسجيل فيديو مع والدتها وخالتها وابنتها البالغة من العمر ثلاث سنوات وابنها البالغ من العمر خمس سنوات. في مكالمة لاحقة، أكدوا أن كل ما قالوه صحيح وأن هانا تتعرض لضغوط شديدة للإدلاء بشهادة زور. حين اتصلت بنا روث لأول مرة، قالت بأن هانا أخبرت والدتها في مكالمة هاتفية سابقة مطلع هذا العام: “ماما، سيدي يريد قتلي”

هل هانا تحب نسرين كثيراً لدرجة تجعلها تتخلى عن عائلتها وأولادها أم أن نسرين حرمتهم من التواصل لشهور وهي تستعبدها وتعذبها؟ ينبغي على نسرين تسليم هانا إلى السفارة ومعها راتبها وتذكرة سفر كي تتمكن من لمّ شملها مع من تحبهم حقاً.

THE STORY
Joy from Ghana began working for Pierre Attallah and his wife Katia in May, 2019. She claimed she worked long hours “from Monday to Monday,” and was never allowed to leave the house on her own. She contacted This Is Lebanon in October 2020 for help as she had not been paid any salary. When Joy had asked, Katia refused to say when they’d pay, pressed a soapy sponge into Joy’s face, and later told her:
“Raise the matter again, and I’ll show you something the likes of which you have never seen in your life!”
Katia tried to convince Joy her contract was for 3 years, not two.
Pierre told TIL, “I send all her salary. I send by Western Union. I don’t like that you called me. I’m very good. I give her all her salary but I don’t trust her family. They are liars. Joy is not a good girl. She don’t like to work, and she lie, and all these things.” When we advised him to take her back to the office if he wasn’t happy, he replied, “Ok, yalla, bye, bye.” You can listen to the conversation here. The call upset him: “F*** you!,” he told Joy, “F*** your mum! F*** your brother! F*** your agency!” He began yelling at Joy frequently. TIL warned Pierre: “You are being watched. If you harm Joy, you will regret it.” Constant tension was wearing Joy down emotionally and physically. TIL again contacted Pierre. Joy reported afterward that Katia cried and asked, “Why are you making trouble for us?” Evidently, after imprisoning, humiliating and exploiting Joy for months, Katia and her husband were the victims.
The Attallahs relented and paid three months’ salary: the amount due the agency. A relative likened Joy’s situation to kidnapping and was astonished that people could be forced to work long hours, seven days a week, without pay. TIL forwarded his comments to Pierre. Nothing changed.
Joy alleges it was normal for Katia to make unreasonable demands, yell, put suds in her face, push her by the head and summon her by calling, “Come here, b*tch!” Demoralized, she texted:
“They are killing my soul.”
She despaired upon learning that the Attallahs had exploited two former maids. TIL pressed again, and Pierre promised to pay, but claimed Joy had started in June, not May. Joy’s health worsened. Following more pressure from TIL, Pierre agreed to take Joy to the doctor, but warned that if the doctor found nothing, Joy would pay. After considerable delay, Joy saw a doctor, who found three problems and recommended an injection for Joy’s red, swollen hand. Pierre said he had no time to wait for Joy to get treatment: tablets would have to do.
Katia asked Joy if she wanted to go home. Yes! Pierre, four months behind in payments, was enraged, heaping insults on Joy and her family, telling her she must never again ask for medical care, and refusing to let her go. Katia took Joy to the agency, which told Joy she would forfeit four months’ unpaid salary and buy her own ticket if she left. Because of the pain in her hand, Joy agreed to this patently unjust arrangement. But Pierre wanted to keep her. The couple began to fight often, and Joy was terrified, trapped in the flat while their arguments escalated. TIL again asked Pierre about Joy’s salary. On November 29, Joy finally wired home $580 in remittances.
Joy asked for a doctor again. Pierre responded with denial, sarcasm, and insults toward her family. TIL informed Pierre that he must, under the terms of the contract, pay what he owed Joy and send her home. That day, Joy texted TIL for the phone number of the police: “The sir is angry.”
On January 28, 2020, Joy bought her own ticket from the money she had sent home. Pierre refused to take Joy to the airport, insisting she work another month without pay. When Joy tried to change the date of her ticket, Katia turned off the WiFi. Desperate, Joy fled, while Katia threatened to accuse her of theft. TIL told her to cancel the ticket and go back IMMEDIATELY. We confirmed they would accuse her of theft and explained that her ticket was worthless without a passport or employer’s release. Then we lost contact.
When next we heard from Joy, she was home in Ghana! What happened? Away from the apartment, Joy tried to change the ticket, but couldn’t afford the penalty fee. She returned the next morning and unsuccessfully demanded her possessions and passport. Pierre called the police. Joy waited for them: God knew the truth!
When policemen arrived, Joy said, “Okay. Take me to the station. I have nowhere else to go.” They asked why she would return after stealing a million pounds. Pierre had, indeed, lodged a false accusation of theft against Joy – a common tactic of abusers. She protested her innocence:
“Only Jesus is my lawyer, and he can save me from this.”
At the station, Pierre agreed to pay to change Joy’s ticket and let her go, showing which story the police believed. The couple took her to the airport and sent her home with nothing – “not one dollar!” Not even her clothes.
TIL gave Pierre until February 6 to send Joy her 3 months unpaid salary plus $200 for the belongings he stole. That deadline is long past, and Joy has still received no justice from Pierre and Katia who subjected her to nine months of chronic emotional and physical abuse, insults, imprisonment, false accusation, arrest, and the loss of all her belongings.

بدأت جوي، من غانا، العمل لدى بيار عطا الله وزوجته كاتيا في أيار 2019. كانت تعمل لساعات طويلة «من الاثنين إلى الاثنين»، ولم يُسمح لها بمغادرة المنزل بمفردها. اتصلت بجمعية “هذا لبنان” في تشرين الأول طلباً للمساعدة لأنها لم تقبض أي راتب. لما طالبت جوي به، رفضت كاتيا أن تقول متى ستدفع لها، و ضغطت بإسفنجة مليئة بالصابون على وجه جوي، و قالت لها لاحقاً:
«إياك أن تثيري المسألة مرة أخرى، و إلا سأريك شيئاً لم يسبق لك رؤيته في حياتك!».
و حاولت كاتيا إقناع جوي بأن عقدها كان لثلاث سنوات وليس لسنتين.
قال بيار لـجمعية “هذا لبنان”: «إني أرسل كل راتبها. أرسله بواسطة ويسترن يونيون. لا أحبذ اتصالكم بي. إني شخص طيب جداً. و أعطيها راتبها بالكامل لكنني لا أثق في عائلتها. إنهم كاذبون. جوي ليست فتاة صالحة. فهي لا تحب العمل، و تكذب، وكل هذه الأمور». عندما قدمنا له نصيحة بإعادتها إلى المكتب إن لم يكن مسروراً، أجاب: “حسناً، يلّا، إلى اللقاء، إلى اللقاء”. يمكنكم الاستماع إلى المحادثة هنا. و إذ أزعجته المكالمة، قال لجوي: «***أنت! ***أمك! ***أخاك! ***وكالتك!». و أخذ يصرخ في وجهها باستمرار. قام “هذا لبنان” بإنذار بيار: «أنت تحت المراقبة. إن آذيت جوي، سوف تندم». كان التوتر المستمر يقضي على جوي عاطفياً وجسدياً. فاتصل “هذا لبنان” مرة أخرى ببيار. أفادت جوي بعد ذلك بأن كاتيا راحت تبكي و تسألها: «لماذا تسببين لنا المشاكل؟». من الواضح أنه بعد قيامهما بسَجن جوي وإهانتها واستغلالها لشهور، كانت كاتيا وزوجها الضحيّتن.
تعطفت عائلة العطالله ودفعت راتب ثلاثة أشهر: المبلغ المستحق للوكالة. وقد شبّه أحد أقاربها وضع جوي بالاختطاف، و كان مصعوقاً من إجبار الناس على العمل لساعات طويلة، سبعة أيام في الأسبوع، بدون أجر. أحال “هذا لبنان” تعليقات هذا القريب إلى بيار، و لكن بقي الأمر على حاله.
لقد كان أمراً طبيعياً أن تطلب كاتيا أشياء غير معقولة، وتصرخ، وتحشر الرغوة في وجهها، وتنهزها من رأسها و تستدعيها منادية إياها: «تعالي هنا، يا عاهرة!». على حدّ قول جوي. كتبت لنا رسالة وهي محبطة:
«إنهم يقتلون روحي».
و شعرت باليأس عندما علمت أن عائلة عطاالله استغلت خادمتين قبلها. ضغط “هذا لبنان” مرة أخرى، ووعد بيار بالدفع، لكنه زعم أن جوي بدأت العمل في حزيران، وليس في أيار. تدهورت صحة جوي. وبعد مزيد من الضغط من “هذا لبنان”، وافق بيار على أن يأخذ جوي إلى الطبيب، لكنه أنذر إذا لم يجد الطبيب علّة، فإن جوي ستدفع. وبعد تأخير كثير، ذهبت جوي إلى الطبيب، و قد وجد ثلاث إشكالات وأوصى بحقن يد جوي الحمراء المتورمة. قال بيار إنه لم يكن لديه وقت لانتظار جوي للحصول على العلاج: كانت الأقراص ستفي بالغرض.
سألت كاتيا جوي إذا كانت تريد العودة إلى وطنها. «نعم»! فثار غضب بيار، وهو المتأخر عن الدفع أربعة أشهر، مما أدى إلى إنزال وابل من الإهانات على جوي وعائلتها، و طلب منها ألا تطلب الرعاية الطبية مرة أخرى، ورفض السماح لها بالرحيل. أخذت كاتيا جوي إلى الوكالة، حيث أخبروا جوي أنها ستتنازل عن راتب الأشهر الأربعة غير المدفوع و تشتري تذكرتها بنفسها في حال أرادت المغادرة. وبسبب الألم في يدها، وافقت جوي على هذا الحل غير المنصف. لكن بيار أراد الاحتفاظ بها. بدأ الزوجان يتشاجران في غالب الأحيان، و شعرت جوي بالخوف و بأنها محاصرة في الشقة بينما كثرت شجاراتهما. سأل “هذا لبنان” بيار مرة أخرى عن راتب جوي. و في 29 تشرين الثاني، قامت جوي أخيراً بتحويل مبلغ 580 دولاراً أمريكياً إلى بلدها.
طلبت جوي أن ترى طبيباً مرة أخرى. جاء رد بيار بإنكار وسخرية و إهانات تجاه عائلتها. فأبلغ “هذا لبنان” بيار أنه ملزم، بموجب شروط العقد، دفع مستحقات جوي و إعادتها إلى ديارها. في ذلك اليوم، أرسلت جوي رسالة نصية إلى “هذا لبنان” تطلب رقم هاتف الشرطة: “السيد غاضب”.
في 28 كانون الثاني 2020، اشترت جوي تذكرتها بنفسها من النقود التي أرسلتها إلى بلدها. فرفض بيار أن يأخذ جوي إلى المطار، وأصر على أن تعمل شهراً آخر بدون أجر. وعندما حاولت جوي تغيير موعد الرحلة، قطعت كاتيا اتصال الانترنت. فهربت جوي يائسة، بينما هددت كاتيا باتهامها بالسرقة. طلب منها “هذا لبنان” بإلغاء التذكرة والعودة على الفور. و أكدنا لها بأنهم سيتهمونها بالسرقة وشرحنا لها أن تذكرتها لا قيمة لها بدون جواز السفر أو سماح بالمغادرة من صاحب العمل. ثم فقدنا الاتصال معها.
عندما سمعنا بعد ذلك أخبار جوي، كانت في بيتها في غانا! ماذا حدث؟ حاولت جوي، بعيداً عن الشقة، تغيير موعد الرحلة، إلا أنها لم تستطع دفع رسم الغرامة. فعادت في صباح اليوم التالي وطالبت بمقتنياتها وجواز سفرها دون جدوى. اتصل بيار بالشرطة. انتظرتهم جوي: لقد بان الحق عند الله!
قالت جوي عندما وصل رجال الشرطة: «حسناً. خذوني إلى المخفر. ليس لدي مكان آخر أذهب إليه». فسألوها ما الذي دفعها للعودة بعد سرقة مليون ليرة لبنانية. في الواقع، كان بيار قد قدم اتهاماً كاذباً بالسرقة ضد جوي – وهو أسلوب شائع لدى المعتدين. وأكدت على براءتها:
«يسوع فقط هو محاميَّ، ويمكنه أن ينقذني من هذا».
وافق بيار في المخفر على الدفع لتغيير تذكرة جوي وتركها تذهب، مبيّناً أية قصة صدقتها الشرطة. أخذها الزوجان إلى المطار و أعاداها إلى بلدها من دون أي شيء – «و لا دولاراً واحداً!». حتى من دون ثيابها.
لقد أعطى “هذا لبنان” بيار مهلة حتى 6 شباط لإرسال جوي راتبها غير المدفوع لمدة 3 أشهر بالإضافة إلى 200 دولار للأمتعة التي سرقها. مضى على ذلك الموعد النهائي وقت طويل، و لم تحصل جوي بعدُ على العدالة من بيار وكاتيا اللذين أخضعاها لتسعة أشهر من التعنيف الشديد عاطفياً وجسدياً، والإهانات، والسَّجن، والاتهام الباطل، والاعتقال، و خسارة كل أغراضها الشخصية.

TA contacted us on 4 November, 2019: Good evening please I need your help. Please I beg you in the name of God help me out of this place. My problem is am working at Lebanon am do house help. My mister sleep with me beat me if his wife go work. They treat me bad. Please I need your help.
TIL: What do you mean he slept with you? Did he rape you?
TA: Yes he rape me please help me out of the place.
TIL: When was the last time you were raped?
TA: Two weeks ago now. Am tired of this place. I told them dat am going back to my country they not allow me.
TIL: How many times has he raped you?
TA: 4 times now. I told my Nigeria agent he told them at office they don’t answer me.
TA was near Bar Elias, not far from the Syrian border. The last we heard from her she had escaped. Communication with her was difficult because of her limited English. We put her in touch with another Yoruba speaker but have now lost contact with both of them. We believe enough time has passed that it is safe to post her story and warn others about this rapist.

اتصلت بنا “ت. أ” في 4 تشرين الثاني 2019: مساء الخير. أرجو مساعدتكم. أرجوكم، أتوسل إليكم بحق الله أن تساعدوني في مغادرة هذا المكان. مشكلتي هي أنني أعمل في لبنان مساعدة في الأعمال المنزلية. سيدي ينام معي ويضربني عندما تذهب زوجته إلى العمل. إنهم يسيئون معاملتي. أرجوكم أنا بحاجة لمساعدتكم.
“هذا لبنان”: ماذا تقصدين أنه نام معك؟ هل اغتصبك؟
“ت. أ”: نعم لقد اغتصبني. الرجاء مساعدتي في مغادرة هذا المكان.
“هذا لبنان”: متى كانت آخر مرة تعرضت فيها للاغتصاب؟
“ت. أ”: منذ أسبوعين. تعبت من هذا المكان. أخبرتهم أني سأعود إلى بلدي لكنهم لا يسمحون لي بذلك.
“هذا لبنان”: كم مرة اغتصبك؟
“ت. أ”: 4 مرات حتى الآن. أخبرت وكيلي في نيجيريا الذي قال لهم ذلك في المكتب، غير أنهم لم يجيبوه.
كانت “ت. أ” بالقرب من بر الياس، ليست بعيدة عن الحدود السورية. وآخر ما سمعناه عنها هو أنها قد هربت. كان يصعب التواصل معها بسبب لغتها الإنجليزية المحدودة. قمنا بوصلها مع شخص يتكلم اللغة اليوربية إلا أننا فقدنا الاتصال بكليهما. نعتقد أنه مضى وقت كافٍ ليكون من الآمن نشر قصتها وتحذير الآخرين من هذا المغتصب.

Abigail was appalled when her elderly employer, Anis Mohammad Chalhoub of Nabatieh, began to harass her sexually.
“I wear trousers to sleep because I am afraid he will rape me.”
This Is Lebanon advised the Ghanaian domestic worker to hide her phone and record her boss’ behaviour. The resulting video shows what Anis Chalhoub did to Abigail that particular day.

Abigail tried to get the help of her agent, whose sixth-floor office, containing several pictures of him in army uniform, is located in Beirut near the airport, but who lives in the south. Abigail referred to him as Captain Alaeddine. His name on TrueCaller is Alaeddine Fakreddine. The agent happened to be in the south when Abigail phoned him. His response was prompt. A short while later he arrived at the house of Abigail’s employer. He hit and kicked Abigail, spat in her face, called her a liar and accused her of wanting to go back to her homeland to get sex, something he said he could arrange for her in Lebanon. When she showed her agent the video she had made, her phone was taken away from her (although she quickly found a clever way to get it back). The agent said she could only go back to Ghana if she worked free for 5 months and paid her own airfare. He claimed that he had paid $1000 to the Ghanaian agent who had arranged her travel, beyond the $600 she herself had paid. Abigail realized with horror the implication for herself if this claim was true:
“Which means that the agent in Ghana sold me to him.”
Human trafficking is still practiced by some in Ghana – and Lebanon.
The team at This Is Lebanon knew we had to get Abigail out of that situation urgently. We organized her escape to Beirut and arranged for her to stay with other Ghanaian women who had escaped their abusers. On July 28, Abigail was safely on a plane back home.
Upon her arrival, Abigail reflected upon her experience:
“Living in Lebanon was like hell. How can an old man, old enough to be my grandfather, decide to sleep with me because he has no wife, and because I refused he will starve me sometimes just to punish me? I only came to Lebanon to work so that I can help my poor mother, but in return what I got was total disappointment from some Lebanese. I will make sure no Ghanaian returns to Lebanon to work again. I want to thank This Is Lebanon for their good work. If it wasn’t for the help of This Is Lebanon, I wouldn’t have made it.”

لا ينبغي السماح لأنيس شلهوب بتوظيف عاملة منازل أخرى لديه. كثيراً ما حاولت أبيغيل الحصول على مساعدة وكيلها، الذي يقع مكتبه في الطابق السادس، ويحتوي على عدة صور له بزي الجيش، في بيروت بالقرب من المطار، لكنه يعيش في الجنوب. أشارت إليه أبيغيل باسم النقيب علاء الدين. صادف وجود الوكيل في الجنوب عندما اتصلت به أبيغيل. فكانت استجابته سريعة. بعد فترة وجيزة وصل إلى منزل صاحب عمل أبيغيل. و راح يضرب ويركل أبيغيل، ويبصق في وجهها، ثم اعتبرها كاذبة واتّهمها بالرغبة في العودة إلى وطنها لممارسة الجنس، وهو أمر قال إنه يمكن أن يدبّره لها في لبنان. عندما عرضت على وكيلها مقطع الفيديو الذي صورته، سُحب منها هاتفها (على الرغم من أنها سرعان ما وجدت طريقة ذكية لاستعادته). قال الوكيل بأنه لا يمكنها العودة إلى غانا إلا إذا عملت مجاناً لمدة 5 أشهر ودفعت بنفسها ثمن تذكرة الطائرة. وزعم أنه قد دفع 1000 دولار للوكيل في غانا الذي رتب لها السفر، علاوة على 600 دولار التي دفعتها هي. فارتعبت أبيغيل إذ أدركت الآثار المترتبة عليها لذلك الادعاء إن كان صحيحاً:
«هذا يعني أن الوكيل في غانا قد باعني له»
لا يزال هناك ممارسة للاتجار بالبشر من قبل البعض في غانا – ولبنان.
أدرك الفريق في “هذا لبنان” أنه علينا إخراج أبيغيل من هذا الوضع بصورة عاجلة. قمنا بتدبير هروبها إلى بيروت ورتبنا لها البقاء مع نساء أخريات من غانا استطعن الفرار من المعتدين عليهنّ. في 28 تموز، كانت أبيغيل بأمان على متن طائرة عائدة إلى وطنها.
ولدى وصولها، تأملت أبيغيل بما عانته:
كان العيش في لبنان يشبه الجحيم. كيف يمكن لرجل عجوز، يبلغ من العمر بما يكفي ليكون جدي، أن يقرر النوم معي لأنه ليس لديه زوجة، ولأنني رفضت كان يجوّعني أحياناً لمجرد معاقبتي؟ لقد أتيت إلى لبنان للعمل فحسب كي أتمكن من مساعدة والدتي المسكينة، لكن في المقابل لم أحصل إلا على خيبة أمل كبيرة من بعض اللبنانيين. سأحرص على عدم عودة أي مواطنة من غانا إلى لبنان للعمل مرة أخرى. أريد أن أشكر “هذا لبنان” على حُسن عملهم. لولا مساعدة “هذا لبنان” لما تمكنت من النجاة والعودة.

THE STORY
Adama was determined to improve the life of her husband Adams and their then 3-year-old daughter, Josephine. When the agent Daniel Fofanah in Sierra Leone told her that she could earn $200 per month in Lebanon, she sold her refrigerator, television, and chairs to pay the agent’s fee, leaving Josephine in the care of her younger sister. On June 13, 2019, Adama arrived in Lebanon and lost her freedom.
Joseph Abu Issa of Best Maids on the autostrad in Khaldeh arranged work for Adama with Dalia (Dalai?- Joseph refused to clarify the name for us) Ghader and her three sons, Ahmad, Mohammad and Ta’rif in their home near Naamah. Dalia’s daughter Katia and her children would visit the house as well. When Dalia did not pay her at the end of the first month, Adama complained to Ziad Zakka, a Freetown-born Lebanese tent fabric salesman who was working as a translator for Joseph. Ziad refused to talk to the madam on her behalf: “That’s not how it works in Lebanon.” He assured her that the employer was holding on to her money for her, and that she would be paid. Although Adama had her doubts, she continued to work for the Ghader family for 8½ months. She knew they had the money for her salary, since Dalia’s husband works in Oman.
But the situation became unbearable. In revenge for her complaint to the office, the Ghaders took away Adama’s phone for a month — torture for the mother separated from her preschool daughter. Adama became ill for five days, and Dalia refused to take her to a doctor, instead giving her Panadol: “Panadol is good for you.”
The family beat her – the worst was when all three sons hit her with rods. She was called a “sharmouta” (b*tch) daily.
She would go around the house in tears, and no one ever asked, “Adama, why are you crying?” Most frightening, Mohammad on two occasions came into her room in the middle of the night, and she had to fight him off as he tried to remove her clothing. When she complained to Dalia about her son’s sexual assault, Dalia took away the key to Adama’s room, ensuring the potential rapist unhindered access. As a result, Adama spent many nights lying awake in fear of being raped.
Adama realized these people were, in her words, “wicked and heartless,” and they would never pay her.
She returned to the office on March 1, 2020, where she was told at various times 1) that she must return to her employer “so you can get the money,” 2) that she would not get paid because she had broken her contract by leaving her employer, and 3) that she would not get paid because there was no money to pay her. Joseph refused to assign Adama to a new employer, but instead put Adama to work for his own family. Adama now cleans the home of his mother, but she is also required to clean for Joseph’s sister. Joseph never even pretended he would pay her. He seems to think she is obligated to work to make up for leaving an employer who exploited and mistreated her. Joseph has added insult to injury by hitting Adama himself. After five months of being ripped off by Joseph and his wife Maguy, Adama has reached out to This Is Lebanon for help to get paid and get home.
This Is Lebanon has given the Ghaders an opportunity to pay Adama the money they owe her, but they have not done so.
They have exploited, demeaned, and physically and sexually abused the woman who served them.
The Ghader family deserve the scorn of all decent people. They personify all that is evil about the Kafala system.
Ziad Zakka (check out his Facebook page to discover what an upstanding citizen he is!) has been an accessory to Adama’s enslavement. He has stood with an oppressive employer rather than speaking up for the basic human rights of a woman from the land of his birth who was in his care.
On 7 August, Adama sent a voice message to This Is Lebanon saying “The suffering in Lebanon is too much for me. Why do Joseph and Ziad treat me like this? Please help me. I will kill myself. The suffering is too much for me. I will kill myself.”
Joseph Abou Issa has refused to advocate for a worker who was being exploited, and he is using his position to enslave a woman for five months and counting. The Kafala system seems to produce exactly this kind of agent. Now Joseph is refusing to give Adama her right to be sent home. Instead, he is planning to set her up for further exploitation by sending her to neighboring Guinea. TIL offered to save him exposure to the media if he would pressure the Ghaders to pay Adama, pay her for her work for his own family, and buy her a ticket to her homeland. He has not done so. We urge all our readers to phone Joseph (+961 3 951 529 and +961 71 951 529) or his wife Maguy (+961 76 735 966), speaking on behalf of Adama. We also implore the Lebanese authorities to investigate this agency and withdraw Joseph Abou Issa’s licence to operate.

كانت أداما مصممة على تحسين حياة زوجها آدامز وابنتهما جوزفين البالغة من العمر عندئذ 3 سنوات. عندما أخبرها الوكيل دانييل فوفاناه في سيراليون أن بإمكانها أن تكسب 200 دولار شهرياً في لبنان، باعت ثلاجتها وتلفزيونها وكراسيها لدفع رسوم الوكيل، وتركت جوزفين في رعاية أختها الصغرى. في 13 حزيران 2019 وصلت أداما إلى لبنان وخسرت حريتها.
رتب جوزيف أبو عيسى، صاحب مكتب ” بيست ميدز” على الطريق السريع في خلدة، العمل لأداما مع داليا (دالاي؟ – رفض جوزيف توضيح الاسم لنا) غدير وأبنائها الثلاثة أحمد ومحمد وطريف في منزلهم بالقرب من نعمة. كانت ابنة داليا كاتيا وأطفالها يزورون المنزل أيضاً. عندما لم تدفع لها داليا في نهاية الشهر الأول، اشتكت أداما لزياد زكا، بائع أقمشة الخيام اللبناني المولود في “فريتاون” والذي كان يعمل مترجماً لجوزيف. رفض زياد التحدث إلى السيدة نيابة عنها: «لا تجري الأمور هكذا في لبنان». وأكد لها أن صاحبة العمل تحتفظ لها بمالها، وأنها ستدفع لها. بالرغم من الشكوك التي كانت تساور أداما، إلا أنها واصلت العمل لدى عائلة غدير لمدة ثمانية أشهر ونصف الشهر. كانت تعلم أن لديهم المال لدفع راتبها، لأن زوج داليا يعمل في عُمان.
لكن أصبح الوضع لا يطاق. انتقاماً لشكواها إلى المكتب، أخذت عائلة غديرهاتف أداما مدة شهر – وهذا تعذيب لأم منفصلة عن ابنتها التي في عمر الحضانة. مرضت أداما لمدة خمسة أيام، فرفضت داليا أن تأخذها إلى الطبيب، وبدلاً من ذلك أعطتها بانادول: «بانادول مفيد لك».
كانت الأسرة تضربها – وأسوأ ما في الأمر كان عندما ضربها الأبناء الثلاثة جميعهم بالعصي. كانوا يدعونها “عاهرة” يومياً.
كانت تجول في المنزل باكية، ولم يسألها أحد قط: «لماذا تبكين يا أداما؟». و الأكثر رعباً هو أن محمد دخل غرفتها مرتين في منتصف الليل، وكان عليها أن تقاومه بينما كان يحاول أن ينزع عنها ملابسها. عندما اشتكت لداليا من الاعتداء الجنسي من قبل ابنها، أخذت داليا مفتاح غرفة أداما، لتضمن وصول المغتصب المتوقّع دون عائق. وبذلك، أمضىت أداما عدة ليال ترقد مستيقظة خوفاً من التعرض للاغتصاب.
لقد أدركت أداما أن هؤلاء الناس، حسب تعبيرها بالذات، “أشرار وبلا رأفة” وأنهم لن يدفعوا لها أبداً.
فعادت إلى المكتب في 1 آذار 2020، حيث قيل لها في أوقات متفاوتة: 1) أنها يجب أن تعود إلى صاحبة عملها “حتى تتمكن من الحصول على المال”، 2) أنها لن تحصل على أجر لأنها خرقت عقدها بتركها صاحبة عملها، و 3) أنها لن تتقاضى أجرها لأنه لم يكن هناك نقود ليدفعوا لها. رفض جوزيف تعيين أداما عند صاحب عمل جديد، لكنه بدلاً من ذلك سخّرها للعمل لدى أسرته. تقوم أداما الآن بتنظيف منزل والدته، ولكن مطلوب منها أيضاً تنظيف منزل شقيقته. لم يتظاهر يوسف حتى بأنه سيدفع لها. يبدو أنه يعتقد أنها مُلزمة بالخدمة للتعويض عن تركها صاحبة العمل التي استغلتها وأساءت معاملتها. وأضاف جوزيف على الجراح ذلاً وإهانة بضرب أداما بنفسه. بعد خمسة أشهر من سرقة جوزيف وزوجته ماغي لها، قامت أداما بالتواصل مع “هذا لبنان” تطلب المساعدة للحصول عل رواتبها والعودة إلى وطنها.
أعطى “هذا لبنان” الفرصة لعائلة غدير أن يدفعوا مستحقات أداما من المال، لكنهم لم يفعلوا.
لقد استغلوا المرأة التي خدمتهم واحتقروها وعنّفوها واعتدوا عليها جنسياً.
إن عائلة غدير تستحق ازدراء جميع الناس الشرفاء. إنهم يجسّدون كل الشر الذي في نظام الكفالة.
زياد زكا (راجع صفحته على فيسبوك لتكتشف كم هو مواطن شريف!) كان شريكاً في استعباد أداما. لقد ساند صاحب عمل مستبدّاً ظالماً بدلاً من الدفاع بجرأة عن حقوق الإنسان الأساسية لامرأة من مسقط رأسه والتي كانت في رعايته.
في 7 آب، أرسلت أداما رسالة صوتية إلى “هذا لبنان” تقول فيها: «المعاناة في لبنان أكبر مما أحتمل. لماذا يعاملني يوسف وزياد بهذه الطريقة؟ أرجوكم ساعدونى. سوف أقتل نفسي. المعاناة فوق طاقتي. سأقتل نفسي».
لقد رفض جوزيف أبو عيسى الدفاع عن عاملة تم استغلالها، بل ويستغل منصبه لاستعباد امرأة مدة خمسة أشهر والعدّ مستمرّ. يبدو أن نظام الكفالة يثمر هذا النوع بالضبط من الوكلاء. إن جوزيف يرفض الآن أن يعطي أداما حقها في العودة إلى الوطن. وبدلاً من ذلك، يخطط لإعدادها لمزيد من الاستغلال من خلال زجّها في الأزمات والمخاطر. عرض “هذا لبنان” عليه أن يوفر عليه التعرض لوسائل الإعلام لو أنه ضغط على عائلة غدير أن يدفعوا مستحقات أداما، وأن يدفع مقابل عملها لعائلته، وأن يشتري تذكرة سفر إلى وطنها. لم يقم بذلك. نهيب بجميع قرائنا الاتصال بجوزيف:961 3 951 529 +/ +961 71 951 529أو زوجته ماغي +961 76 735 966 متحدثًين بالنيابة عن أداما. كما نناشد السلطات اللبنانية التحقيق في أمر هذه الوكالة وسحب ترخيص العمل من جوزيف أبو عيسى.

Watch Dorcas explain her awful experience with the owner of “Magic Maids”
THE STORY
Dorcas Boadi, Ghanaian national, arrived in Lebanon on 30 May, 2019. On 19 January her mother passed away and she told her employer, DD, an employee of an international organization, that she wanted to go home for the funeral. At that stage, Dorcas had not been paid for 5 months. DD told Dorcas that she could only go home if she repaid the recruitment fees she’d paid the agent, Joseph Zakhia, Magic Maids in Zahle.
When Dorcas would not stop crying, DD took her to Joseph Zakhia who administered the treatment given by agencies to recalcitrant maids – a thorough beating. Dorcas wrote:
“The boy in the office (who she later identified as Joe) was talking to me to decide to work or I should pay back his money for him before I can go to Ghana. I was sitting down and looking at the man so quiet. In a little moment the boy stood up from his chair and came close to me. He started beating me all up because he was talking to me and I was quiet. He also said if I didn’t stay and she brought me to the office again he will put me in jail.”
Having been beaten into submission, Dorcas was returned to DD.
That’s when Dorcas wrote to This Is Lebanon who messaged DD on 21 January: “Dorcas has contacted us because a) she hasn’t been paid for 5 months and b) she wants to go home to attend her mother’s funeral. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Labor, you have broken the contract by not paying her for 3 consecutive months. She is actually entitled to be sent home with her full salary at your expense. She has agreed to forfeit her salary in order to get home quickly. Please send me a pic of her air ticket. Do NOT send her back to the agency. As you are aware, he has already beaten her up once.”
That same day, we received a message from Dorcas:
“She has booked my ticket and am at the airport now. I am very grateful.”
Joseph Zakhia is a repeat offender. We have had multiple complaints about his physical abuse of domestic workers. When will the Lebanese government provide some oversight and accountability so that Joseph and other agents like him do not have complete impunity to do with these women as they please?

وصلت “دوركاس بوادي”، مواطنة من غانا، إلى لبنان في 30 أيار 2019. لكن والدتها توفيت في 19 كانون الثاني، فأخبرت صاحبة عملها “د د”، موظفة في منظمة دولية، أنها تريد العودة إلى بلادها لحضور الجنازة. و في تلك الأثناء، لم تكن دوركاس قد قبضت راتبها لمدة 5 أشهر. أجابتها “د د” بأنها لا يمكنها العودة إلى وطنها إلا إذا سددت رسوم التوظيف التي كانت قد دفعتها للوكيل جوزيف زاخيا، مكتب “ماجيك ميد”، في زحلة.
و إذ لم تتوقف دوركاس عن البكاء، أخذتها “د د” إلى جوزيف زاخيا الذي عالج الأمر بالطريقة التي تتبعها الوكالات مع الخادمات “المتمردات” – أي الضرب المبرّح. وكتبت دوركاس:
“كان الصبي في المكتب (الذي عرّفته فيما بعد باسم جو) يتحدث معي بشأن قرار مواصلة عملي أو سيكون عليّ تسديد أمواله قبل أن أتمكن من الذهاب إلى غانا. كنت جالسة أنظر إلى الرجل بهدوء. وبعد برهة قصيرة، نهض الصبي عن كرسيه واقترب مني. ثم بدأ يضربني بدون هوادة لأني بقيت صامتة بينما كان يتحدث إلي. و قال لي أيضاً أنه إن لم أستمر في عملي أو أحضرتني “د د” إلى المكتب مرة أخرى، سيضعني في السجن. بعد تعرضها للضرب لإجبارها على الخضوع، أُعيدت دوركاس إلى “د د”.
حينئذ كتبت دوركاس إلى “هذا لبنان” الذي بعث برسالة إلى “د د” في 21 كانون الثاني تقول: “اتصلت دوركاس بنا لأنها أولاً: لم تقبض راتبها منذ 5 أشهر، و ثانياً: تريد العودة إلى بلدها لحضور جنازة والدتها. و بحسب وزارة العمل اللبنانية، فقد انتهكتِ العقد بعدم دفع مستحقاتها لثلاثة أشهر متتالية. يحق لها بالفعل أن تُرسَل إلى ديارها على نفقتك الخاصة مع رواتبها كاملة. و لقد وافقت دوركاس على التنازل عن راتبها كي تعود إلى بلدها بأسرع وقت. من فضلكِ أرسلي لي صورة لتذكرة الطائرة الخاصة بها. لا تعيدها مجدداً إلى الوكالة. كما هو معلوم لديك، فقد سبق و ذاقت منه الضرب المبرّح أصلاً.”
في اليوم نفسه، تلقينا رسالة من دوركاس:
“لقد حجزَتْ لي التذكرة وأنا الآن في المطار. إني شديدة الامتنان لكم.”
إن جوزيف زاخيا لا يتوقف عن تكرار جرائمه. فلدينا العديد من الشكاوى بخصوص التعنيف الجسدي لعاملات المنازل. متى ستفرض الحكومة اللبنانية بعض الرقابة والمساءلة كي لا يتسنى لجوزيف و غيره من الوكلاء أن يفعلوا بهؤلاء النساء كما يحلو لهم؟
