THE STORY
Ade Glory, a 25 year old Cameroonian, had served her time. Her 2-year contract had finished in April 2021 but her employer, a judge, was not allowing her to go home, demanding that she stay another year or pay him to release her. A simple text to the judge did the trick: “We’re sure that you, as a member of the legal profession, are aware of your obligations under the contract. One of those obligations is to provide Glory with a ticket home at the end of her 2 year contract. Please send a picture of that air ticket. Thank you.”
Exactly two weeks after contacting us, Glory was home with her full salary paid. She said:

لقد قضت “أدي غلوري”، و هي شابة من الكاميرون تبلغ من العمر 25 عاماً، فترة خدمتها. في نيسان 2021، انتهت مدة عقدها لسنتين لكن صاحب العمل، وهو قاضٍ، لم يسمح لها بالعودة إلى بلدها، وطالبها بالبقاء مدة عام آخر، أو أن تدفع له مقابل إطلاق سراحها. لكن رسالة نصية بسيطة للقاضي قد وفت بالغرض: “نحن على يقين من أنك، بصفتك عضواً في مهنة المحاماة، مدركٌ لالتزاماتك المنصوص عليها في العقد. وأحد هذه الالتزامات هو منح غلوري تذكرة العودة إلى الوطن في نهاية عقدها لمدة عامين. الرجاء إرسال صورة لتذكرة الطيران تلك. وشكراً لك.”
بعد أسبوعين بالضبط من اتصالها بنا، عادت غلوري إلى بلدها وبحوزتها راتبها كاملاً. قالت:
“لقد كان الأمر أشبه بالمعجزة.”
THE STORY
Imagine you lived in a remote village in Nepal, spoke a tribal language and didn’t know the national language well, and your eldest daughter had gone to Lebanon over a decade ago and hadn’t returned or sent money for several years.
This was the situation of Gaj Bahadur Moktan whose daughter, Salmo Maya Muktan, left Nepal on 27 August 2010 at the age of 20 to work for Mr Farouk Ismail Khoder and his wife Mrs Asadghik. They have an adult son and their known address is Baabda, Rihanie, Arayssi Building.
In her first 2 years, Salmo was able to send money home – about $3700. After that, all payments stopped. She continually asked for her salary as she went to Lebanon to support her parents and 5 younger siblings, but was met only with false promises.
In 2015, Salmo’s father contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu who notified the Nepalese consulate in Beirut of her situation. He also recently contacted This Is Lebanon. This Is Lebanon ascertained that the consulate had Salmo removed from the Khoder home and she has been in a Caritas shelter since 19 June, along with another Nepali worker, Sajita, also owed a decade’s salary.
Instead of paying at least part of the huge salary debt he owes to Salmo, Mr Khoder engaged a lawyer, Mr Samir Haidar, to represent him. Domestic workers are commonly deported from the Caritas shelter without their salaries, their cases being referred to a labyrinthine judicial system where cases drag on for years, the workers are unable to present their own testimonies, and justice is usually denied. One such case is that of Halima, whose salary was unpaid for a decade, and who was enslaved by a Lebanese politician, Ibtissam Saade. Halima returned to the Philippines in 2017 and four years later has not received any payment. Unpaid salary cases of a decade or more are not uncommon, the longest This Is Lebanon case being a Filipino who was enslaved for 21 years.
This is Lebanon contacted Mr Haidar, citing the case of Sajita, whom they helped to rescue from her enslavers. This Is Lebanon went on to state that Salmo and her family are willing to negotiate a settlement which can include an installment plan. They requested that he ask his client to present a proposal for them to consider.
This Is Lebanon discovered that Mrs Asedik Fyounijar, who was Salmo’s official sponsor, died on 30 May 2019, leaving her husband, Mr Khoder with an open court case with huge debts due to a breach of trust, and a lawsuit against their company, Walco, who deal in car paint.
Mr Haidar claimed that his client intended to pay his debt to Salmo by trying to sell an apartment in his deceased wife’s name, but he also made many false accusations. He misrepresented his client’s age (he is 77, not “in his 80s”). He asserted that Salmo’s passport had not been withheld (it had), that her father was a drunkard (he isn’t), that Salmo had not asked for her salary (she had), that there are ongoing negotiations with the Consulate (there are not) and that Salmo was treated like a daughter (far from it).
Finally he accused This Is Lebanon of slander and defamation of character and threatened legal action against them. Salmo’s $18,000 salary remains unpaid.
UPDATE: After This Is Lebanon posted Salmo’s story, she received the following payments: $4000 in mid December 2021 and $5,000 on 11 May 2022.

تخيل لو أنك تعيش في قرية نائية في نيبال، وتتحدث لغة قبليّة ولا تعرف لغة البلد جيداً، وغادرت ابنتك الكبرى إلى لبنان منذ أكثر من 10 سنوات ولم تعد أو ترسل المال لعدة سنوات.
كان هذا هو حال غاج باهادور موكتان الذي غادرت ابنته، سالمو مايا موكتان، نيبال في 27 آب 2010 حين كانت في سن العشرين، للعمل لدى السيد فاروق إسماعيل خضر وزوجته السيدة أسَدغيك. ولهما ابن راشد وعنوانهما المعروف هو بعبدا، الريحانية، مبنى الرّيسي.
في أول عامين من عملها، تمكنت سالمو من إرسال النقود إلى بلدها – حوالي 3700 دولار. بعد ذلك، توقفت جميع الدفعات المالية. كانت تطالب براتبها باستمرار حيث أنها ذهبت إلى لبنان لإعالة والديها وإخوتها الخمسة الصغار، لكنها لم تلقَ إلا وعوداً كاذبة.
في عام 2015، اتصل والد سالمو بوزارة الخارجية في كاتماندو والتي أبلغت القنصلية النيبالية في بيروت عن حالتها. كما اتصل مؤخراً بجمعية “هذا لبنان” التي تأكدت من أن القنصلية قد أخرجت سالمو مؤخراً من منزل خضر وهي الآن في أحد ملاجئ كاريتاس، مع عاملة نيبالية أخرى، ساجيتا، والتي يدينون لها أيضاً برواتب عشر سنوات.
بدلاً من دفع جزء على الأقل من الراتب الضخم الذي يدين به لسالمو، استعان السيد خضر بمحامٍ وهو السيد سمير حيدر، لتمثيله. يتم عموماً ترحيل عاملات المنازل من ملجأ كاريتاس دون رواتبهن، وتحال قضاياهن إلى نظام قضائي يشبه المتاهة حيث تطول القضايا لسنوات، ولا تتمكن العاملات من تقديم شهاداتهن، وعادة ما يُحرَمن من العدالة. إحدى هذه الحالات هي حليمة التي لم يُدفع راتبها لعقد من الزمن، والتي تم استعبادها من قبل السياسيّة اللبنانية ابتسام السعدي. عادت حليمة إلى الفلبين في عام 2017 والآن بعد أربع سنوات لم تتلق أية مبالغ بعد. حالات الرواتب غير المدفوعة لعشر سنوات أو أكثر ليست نادرة الحدوث، وأطول قضية تابعها “هذا لبنان” كانت الفلبينية التي تم استعبادها لمدة 21 عاماً.
اتصلت جمعية “هذا لبنان” بالسيد حيدر، مستشهدة بقضية ساجيتا، التي ساعدوا في إنقاذها من مستعبديها. ومضى “هذا لبنان” ليصرّح بأن سالمو وعائلتها على استعداد للتفاوض بشأن تسوية يمكن أن تتضمن خطة لتقسيط المبلغ. طلبوا منه أن يطلب من موكله تقديم اقتراح لهم للنظر فيه.
اكتشف “هذا لبنان” أن السيدة أشيدك، التي كانت الكفيل الرسمي لسالمو، قد توفيت في 30 أيار 2019، وتركت زوجها السيد خضر مع قضية ديون ضخمة بسبب خيانة الأمانة، ودعوى قضائية ضد شركتهم، Walco، التي تتاجر في طلاء السيارات.
ادّعى السيد حيدر بأن موكله كان ينوي تسديد ديونه إلى سالمو من خلال محاولة بيع شقة باسم زوجته المتوفاة، لكنه وجّه أيضاً العديد من الاتهامات الكاذبة. لقد أعطى فكرة خاطئة عن عمر موكله (هو 77، وليس “في الثمانينيات من عمره”). أكد أن جواز سفر سالمو لم تتم مصادرته (لقد تمت)، وأن والدها كان سكّيراً (هو ليس كذلك)، وأن سالمو لم تطالب براتبها (بل كانت تطالب)، وأن هناك مفاوضات جارية مع القنصلية (ليس هناك أية مفاوضات) وأن سالمو تلقّت معاملة الابنة (بعيدة كل البعد عن ذلك).
وأخيراً اتهم “هذا لبنان” بالتشهير وتشويه السمعة وهدّد باتخاذ إجراءات قانونية ضدهم. ولم تزل رواتب سالمو البالغة 18 ألف دولار غير مدفوعة.
تحديث: بعدما نشرت جمعية (هذا لبنان) قصة سالمو، تلقت المبالغ التالية: 4000 دولار في منتصف ديسمبر (كانون الأول) 2021 و5000 دولار في 11 مايو (أيار).

उनको पहिलो 2 वर्षमा, साल्मो घर पैसा पठाउन सक्षम थिइन – लगभग $ 3700। त्यस पछि, सबै भुक्तानी बन्द भयो। उनी आमा बुबा र ५ कान्छो भाइबहिनीहरुलाई सहयोग गर्न लेबनन गएकि थिइन तर लगातार आफ्नो तलब माग्दा पनि झुटो प्रतिज्ञाहरु मात्र भेटियो।
२०१५ मा, साल्मोका बुबाले काठमाडौं मा परराष्ट्र मन्त्रालय लाई सम्पर्क गरे जसले बेरूत मा नेपाली दूतावास लाई उनको स्थिति को बारे मा सूचित गरे। उनले भर्खरै दिस इज लेबनान लाई पनि सम्पर्क गरे। टीआईएलले पत्ता लगायो कि वाणिज्य दूतावासले भर्खरै खोडरको घरबाट साल्मो हटाएको र उनी अहिले अर्की नेपाली कामदार सजिता जसको एक दशकको तलब पनि बाँकी छ सँगै क्यारिटास आश्रयमा रहेकी छिन।
साल्मोको तलबको कम्तीमा केही भाग तिर्नुको सट्टा, श्री खोडरले एक वकील श्री समीर हैदरलाई उनको प्रतिनिधित्व गर्न लगाए। घरेलु कामदारहरु सामान्यतया आफ्नो तलब बिना Caritas आश्रयबाट निर्वासित हुन्छन, उनीहरुका मुद्दाहरु एक भूलभुलैया न्यायिक प्रणाली मा पठाइन्छ जहाँ केसहरु केही बर्षहरुको लागी लम्बाइन्छ, श्रमिकहरु आफ्नो गवाही पेश गर्न असमर्थ छन्, र न्याय सामान्यतया इन्कार गरिन्छ। यस्तै एक मामला हलिमा को हो, जसको तलब एक दशक को लागी भुक्तान गरिएको थिएन, र जो एक लेबनानी राजनीतिज्ञ, इब्तिस्साम सादे को दास थिइन्। हलिमा फिलिपिन्स 2017 मा फर्किन् र चार बर्ष पछि सम्म कुनै भुक्तानी प्राप्त भएको छैन। एक दशक वा सो भन्दा बढी को तलब वेतन मामलाहरु असामान्य छैन, सबैभन्दा लामो This Is Lebanon मामला एक फिलिपिनो को हो जो २१ बर्ष को लागी दास बनाइएको थियो।

THE STORY
Fe Simon, a Filipino, and Gadise Fanto, an Ethiopian, worked in Lebanon in the home of Rosine Azzam, her husband Michel, and their two adult daughters. Rosine is a lawyer and a shareholder in her father’s company, Bou Farah Petroleum. Michel used to sell underwear and work at Blom Bank. The Azzam family live in Mar Chaaya.
Of the two domestic workers, Fe was the lucky one. She had a phone and was in regular contact with This Is Lebanon between August 2019 and October 2020, when she went home. In texts, calls and videos she testified to the abuse that Gadise was suffering.
“Madam Rosine slapped Gadise. Many times she hurt her.”
Fe sent videos of Gadise crying and asking for help.
Although not physically abused, Fe’s salary was withheld, but due to This Is Lebanon’s intervention she returned to the Philippines with $4000 in cash. In the end, she was paid in full.
Gadise was less fortunate. According to Fe, Rosine would make Gadise empty all the kitchen cupboards, wash the already clean pots, pans and crockery then put them all back again. Rosine made Gadise sign a paper agreeing to deductions from her salary for ‘misdemeanors’ e.g.
“Sunday 25 August at 10 am sink is very dusty $10 deducted”
“Wednesday, 28 August 2019, “Forgot to fill black pepper – $5 deducted”
“Sunday, 6 October 2019, “I woke up and again oven is very dirty from last day. – $50 deducted”
After Fe left, Gadise was on her own without any means of contact with the outside world. Unlike Fe, she had no phone and was denied contact with her family for months on end. Having succeeded in getting Fe repatriated with her salary, we at This Is Lebanon turned our efforts to getting Gadise home. Over a period of months, a negotiator communicated with Rosine. Despite the long-term non-payment, Rosine insisted that Gadise must stay until May when she said her contract finished. Gadise had already worked for her for almost 3 years. Rosine always had an excuse why we couldn’t speak to Gadise – her father was sick and she was at the hospital, there was no network, she had Covid…and so on. Then she stopped responding to our calls and messages. But not before she texted, “Gadise is living with us as family.”
On 18 March, 2021, we received unexpected good news from Gadise’s brother who informed us that Gadise was back in Ethiopia and she had been paid in full! We later learned how Gadise escaped: she threw a piece of paper from the balcony onto the pavement below asking for HELP. Someone referred the note to KAFA who sent it to the police.
However, the task is not finished. TIL has been informed about the situation of Towabech Wude Fanto, Gadise’s sister. Towabech works for Roy Abou Farah and his wife, Manal Aouad (39). Roy and Rosine are siblings but according to Rosine, she and Roy are not on speaking terms. In May, Towabech was able to call her family from a phone borrowed from another Ethiopian she met when out with her employers – her first call in two years. She has not been paid for years and Roy is forcing her to stay another year. She is being physically abused. She is effectively enslaved in Roy and Manal’s house. Gadise and her family are very worried about Towabech.
This Is Lebanon has called Roy many times but there is never any reply. We have also texted him without any response. We call on the Lebanese authorities to mobilize and rescue Towabech, to ensure that her due salary is paid and that she is safely repatriated.

القصة
كانت “في سيمون” الفلبينية، و”غاديس فانتو” الإثيوبية، تعملان في لبنان في منزل روزين عزام (52 عاماً) وزوجها ميشيل (62 عاماً) وابنتيهما الراشدتين. روزين محامية ومساهمة في شركة والدها، “بو فرح للبترول”. كان ميشيل يبيع الملابس الداخلية ويعمل في بنك Blom. تقيم عائلة عزام في مار شعيا.
كانت “في” الأوفر حظاً من بين العاملتين المنزليتين. إذ كان لديها هاتف جوال، وكانت على اتصال دائم بـجمعية “هذا لبنان” من شهر آب 2019 إلى حين عودتها إلى بلادها في تشرين الأول 2020. وشهدت في الرسائل النصية والمكالمات ومقاطع الفيديو على الانتهاكات التي عانت منها غاديس..
“سيدتي روزين صفعت جاديس، يا سيدتي. وقد تسببت بأذيتها مرات عديدة”.
أرسلت “في” مقاطع فيديو لغاديس وهي تبكي وتطلب المساعدة.
صحيح أن “في” لم تتعرض للإيذاء الجسدي، إلا أنها لم تقبض رواتبها، ولكن بسبب تدخل “هذا لبنان”، عادت إلى الفلبين وقد حصلت على 4000 دولار نقداً. في النهاية، حصلت على أجرها بالكامل.
كانت غاديس أقل حظاً. حسب قول “في”، فإن روزين كانت تجعل غاديس تفرغ جميع خزائن المطبخ، وتغسل الأواني والمقالي والأواني الفخارية التي سبق تنظيفها، ثم تعيدها كلها مرة أخرى. وقامت روزين بإجبار غاديس على توقيع ورقة توافق فيها على اقتطاع مبلغ من راتبها بسبب “مخالفات” على سبيل المثال:
“الأحد 25 آب الساعة العاشرة صباحاً مغسلة مغبرة جداً، خصم 10 دولارات”
“الأربعاء، 28 آب 2019، نسيت أن تملأ عبوة الفلفل الأسود, خصم 5 دولارات”
“الأحد، 6 تشرين الأول 2019،” استيقظت ومرة أخرى الفرن متسخ جداً من اليوم السابق – خصم 50 دولار.
بعد مغادرة “في”، كانت غاديس بمفردها دون أية وسيلة للاتصال بالعالم الخارجي. وعلى عكس “في”، لم يكن لديها هاتف، وحُرمت من الاتصال بعائلتها لشهور متتالية. بعد أن نجحنا في إعادة “في” إلى بلدها ومعها راتبها، قمنا في “هذا لبنان” بتركيز جهودنا على إعادة غاديس إلى وطنها. وعلى مدى أشهر، تواصل أحد المفاوضين مع روزين. على الرغم من عدم الدفع لمدة طويلة، أصرت روزين على أن غاديس يجب أن تبقى حتى أيار عندما ينتهي عقدها حسب قولها. وكانت غاديس قد عملت لديها بالفعل لما يقارب 3 سنوات. كانت روزين دائماً تجد الأعذار لتعيق تحدثنا إلى غاديس – كان والدها مريضاً، كانت في المستشفى، لم تكن هناك شبكة، وكانت مصابة بـ كورونا … وما إلى ذلك. ثم توقفت عن الرد على مكالماتنا ورسائلنا. ولكن ليس قبل أن ترسل رسالة نصية: “تعيش غاديس معنا كأحد أفراد العائلة”.
في 18 آذار 2021، تلقينا أخباراً سارة غير متوقعة من شقيق غاديس الذي أخبرنا أن غاديس عادت إلى إثيوبيا وقد حصلت على أجرها بالكامل! وقد علمنا لاحقاً كيف هربت غاديس: ألقت بقصاصة ورق من الشرفة على الرصيف في الأسفل طالبة المساعدة. أحال أحدهم الرسالة إلى منظمة “كفى” التي أرسلت الشرطة.
ومع ذلك، لم تنته المهمة. لقد تم إبلاغ “هذا لبنان” بوضع “توابيش وودي فانتو”، شقيقة غاديس. تعمل توابيش لدى روي أبو فرح وزوجته منال عواد (39 عاماً). روي وروزين شقيقان، لكن حسب قول روزين، هي وروي لا يتكلمان مع بعضهما. وفي أيار، تمكنت توابيش من الاتصال بأسرتها من هاتف استعارته من إثيوبية أخرى التقت بها عندما كانت برفقة أصحاب العمل خارج المنزل – وكانت أول مكالمة لها منذ عامين. لم تحصل على أجرها منذ سنوات، ويجبرها روي على البقاء لمدة عام آخر. تتعرض للتعنيف الجسدي. وقد تم استعبادها فعلياً في منزل روي ومنال. غاديس وعائلتها في غاية القلق على توابيش.
اتصل “هذا لبنان” بروي مرات عديدة ولكن من دون أي رد على الإطلاق. كما أرسلنا له رسالة نصية دون أي استجابة. ندعو السلطات اللبنانية إلى التحرك وإنقاذ توابيش، لضمان حصولها على راتبها المستحق وإعادتها سالمة إلى وطنها.

እነዚህ ሁለት የሀገር ውስጥ ሰራተኞች ውስጥ ፊ እድለኛ ስትሆን ስልክ ስላላት በመደበኛነት ከነሐሴ 2011 ዓ.ም እና ጥቅምት 2013 ዓ.ም መካከል ሊባኖን ውስጥ ግንኙነት ነበራት፡፡ ባላት የጽሁፍ መልክት ስልክ ጥሪ እና ቪዲዮ ጋዲሴ ላይ ስለደሰው ስቃይ እና ጥቃት መስክራለች፡፡ ማዳም ሮዚን ጋዲሴን በጥፊ የመታቻት እና በርካታ ጊዜ ጉዳት ታደርስባት እንደነበር ጋዲሴም እለቀሰች እርዳታ እንደምትጠይቅ የሚያሳይ ቪዲዮ ፊ ልካለች፡፡
ምንም እንኳ የአካል ጥቃት ባይሆንም የፊ ደመወዝ በመያዙ በቲአይኤል ጣልቃ መግባት ወደ ፊሊፒንስ ዶላር 4,000.00 ጥሬ ገንዘብ ይዛ ተመልሳለች፡፡ በመጨረሻ ሙሉ ክፍያ ተፈጽሞላታል፡፡
ጋዲሴ ከዚህ ያነሰ መልካም አጋጣሚ ነበራት፡፡ እንደ ፊ አገላለጽ ሮዚን ጋዲሴን ሁሉንም የእቃ ቤት ካፕቦርዶች ባዶ እንድታደርግ ንፁህ ብረድስቶች፣ መጥበሻዎች እንድታፀዳ እና ሁሉንም እንደገና መልሳ እንድታስገባ ታደርጋለች፡፡ ሮዚን ጋዲሴን ከደመወዟ ጥፋት ፈፅመሻ በማለት ተቀናሽ እንዲደረግ ሰነድ ታስፈርማለች፡፡

ፊ ከለቀቀች በኋላ ጋዲሴ ከውጭው አለም ጋር ግንኙነት ማድረግ ሳትችል ብቻዋን ቆይታለች፡፡ እንደ ፊ ስልክ የሌላት በመሆኑ በየወሩ ከቤተሰቧ ጋር ግንኙነት እንዳታደርግ ሆናለች፡፡ ፊን ከደመወዟ ጋር እንድትመለስ በማሳካት ቲኤኤልላይ ጋዲሴ ወደ ቤት እንድትመለስ ጥረት አደረግን፡፡ ለወራት ከሮዚን ጋር ተደራዳሪ ግንኙነት ቢያደርግም ለረጅም ጊዜ ክፍያ ባትፈጽምም ጋዲሴ ውሏ እስከሚልቅ እስከ ግንቦት መቆየት አለባት ብላለች፡፡ ጋዲሴም ለእሷ ሶስት አመት ያህል ሰርታለች፡፡ ሮዚን ከጋዲሴ ጋር እንዳልነጋገር ሁሌ ምክንያት የሰጠች ሲሆን አባቷ ከታመሙ በኋላ ሆስፒታል የሄደች ሲሆን ኔትወርክ ባለመኖሩ በወቅቱ ኮቪድ ስለያዛት እና ሌላም ህመም ስለነበረባር ለእኛ ጥሪ እና መልእክቶች ምላሽ መስጠት አቁማለች፡፡ ከዚህ በፊት በላከችው መልክት ጋዲሴ ከእኛ ጋር እንደቤተሰብ እየኖረች ነው ብላለች፡፡
በ18/03/2021 ከጋዲሴ ወንድም የማንጠብቀውን ጥሩ ዜና የተቀበልን ሲሆን ጋዲሴ ወደ ኢትዮጵያ መመለሷን እና ሙሉ ክፍያ እደተፈፀመላት ነግሮናል፡፡ በኋም ጋዲሴ እንዴት እንዳለመጠች ተረዳን፡፡ አንድ ቁራጭ ወረቀት ከባንኮኒ ወደ ታች በመጣል እርዳታ ጠይቃ አንድ ግለሰብ ማስታወሻውን ወደ ኬኤኤፍኤ በመውሰዱ ፖሊስ ተላከ፡፡
ሆኖም ስራው አላለቀም፡፡ ቲአይኤል ስለ ተዋበች ውዴ ፋንቶ የጋዲሴ እህት መረጃ ደርሶታል፡፡ ተዋበች ለሮይ አቡ ፋራህ እና ባለቤቱ ማናል አዋድ /39/ ትሰራለች፡፡ ሮይ እና ሮዚን እንደ ሮዚን አገላለፅ እህት እና ወንድም ናቸው፡፡ ሆኖም እሷ እና ሮይ አይነጋገሩም፡፡ በግንቦት ወር ተዋበች ከሌላ ኢትዮጵያዊ በተዋሰችው ስልክ ለቤተሰቧ መደወል ችላ ነበር፡፡ እነሱ አሰሪዎቿ ከቤት ውጪ እያሉ የተገናኙ ሲሆን በሁለት አመት ውስጥ የመጀሚሪያ ስልክ ጥሪዋ ነበር፡፡ ለበርካታ አመታት ክፍያ አልተሰጣትም ሮይ ለሌላ አመት እንድትቆይ እያስገደዳት ነው፡፡የአካል ጥቃት የደረሰባት ሲሆን በሮይ እና ማናል ቤት ውስጥ በባርነት ተይዛለች፡፡ ጋዲሴ እና ቤተሰቧ ስለተዋበች በጣም ተጨንቀዋል፡፡

THE STORY
Life in Sierra Leone was hard for Isha Sankoh. Orphaned at a young age and raised by siblings, she had to leave school and do odd jobs to help the family. Eventually Isha resorted to working as a miner, an uncommon choice for women there. Isha proudly tells how she grew strong through that physically rigorous job.
Having been told she could double her salary for lighter work in Lebanon, Isha paid $500 to an agent in Sierra Leone, who organized her travel to Beirut in June, 2019. There she was assigned by Lebanese agent Bilal Khalil to a family who was nice enough to her, allowed her some contact with her family, and fed her well. But Isha needed medical help, and the family was unwilling to pay for Isha’s medical expenses, so they sent her back to the agency.
The agency re-assigned her to a family with three children. They were even kinder, offered her more, and even invited her to join them at church and for shopping. They also paid for Isha to have the operation she needed. But Isha did not recover well, and realized she was unable to continue work. After discussing the matter with her, Isha’s employer sent her back to the agency, paid her the $600 she was owed for her salary, and told the agent Isha needed to be sent home for her family to take care of her.
Suddenly working in the mines was a delight compared to her current situation. Bilal Khalil took everything she owned: her phone and her $600 salary. Although she was in pain and her large, stapled surgical wound was infected, Khalil refused to buy her the prescribed medicine, offering only whatever pills he had on hand.

Her captor beat her, kicked her near her incision and insulted her. He gave her the dilemma between either working or paying 6000$ to go back home.
There were several other women at the agency: some had been there for months, many had been beaten, none had been properly fed, and some were handcuffed. Describing her fear of dying at the agency, Isha said:
“I know they were able [to kill], because I witnessed a girl who was locked up with us die. She was an Ethiopian girl we called Lulu”
“Lulu was beaten every day. She was always handcuffed. She coughed blood and was badly bruised. One day, we noticed she was no longer moving. Police came to look into the death. Bilal warned us that if any of us told the police that he had killed someone, we would be next. So I didn’t say anything. But I was scared. It was the worst time of my life. I even thought about committing suicide.”
One imprisoned woman had managed to smuggle in a phone, though it was soon taken away. Isha seized the opportunity and contacted her sister, who asked for help from This Is Lebanon on January 19. The next day, the agent told This Is Lebanon that Isha had received all her rights, had money in hand, and would be going home as soon as the paperwork was done. He claimed, “She cheated us because she came ill. We paid for it all. She is not entitled to be paid by the insurance company because she had an old illness. We did all the necessary things.” Isha did not return home.
Despite his consistent abuse of African women, Bilal Khalil had an Ethiopian girlfriend who helped him out at the agency and was well aware of the circumstances the other women lived in. According to Isha, the girlfriend was nicknamed “China,” and did everything from administrative work to taking his calls.
This Is Lebanon found a means to communicate with Isha, hear her story, and work for her repatriation. Bilal Khalil was briefly in jail at the time, under investigation for the murder of Lulu. He was soon released. In the meantime, Ghassan Khalil, Bilal’s father, told This Is Lebanon that the agency had no obligation to pay for Isha’s medical expenses, but had paid for her operation because of their “personal feelings.” He claimed the $600 he had taken was money owed by Isha to the agency for being sick and not working. “We’ve lost money on her. She is living and eating here. We’re running a business here.” This Is Lebanon, he said, should have bought Isha’s air ticket if they were concerned.
This Is Lebanon persisted. It was the agency’s obligation to buy the ticket and return Isha’s salary which she needed to get to her hometown and start again. To avoid additional negative repercussions, the agency sent Isha home in mid-March 2020 with $200 of her $600 salary hoping This Is Lebanon would forget about the remaining.
Isha warns others against working in Lebanon:
“What happens there isn’t supposed to happen to human beings. There are many African girls who are suffering and dying there. You won’t lose your life or your freedom if you stay home”

كانت الحياة في سيراليون صعبة على “إيشا سانكوه”. و لأنها تيتّمت في سن مبكرة و قام إخوتها بتربيتها، كان عليها أن تترك المدرسة وأن تقوم بأعمال غريبة من نوعها لمساعدة الأسرة. في النهاية لجأت إيشا إلى العمل في منجم، لتكون واحدة من عدد قليل جداً من النساء في المنجم. تخبرنا إيشا بفخر كيف أنها أصبحت قوية من خلال قيامها بهذا العمل الجسدي الشاق.
بعد أن سمعت بإمكانية مضاعفة راتبها بعمل أقل جهداً في لبنان، دفعت إيشا 500 دولار إلى وكيل في سيراليون، الذي رتب سفرها إلى بيروت في حزيران 2019. هناك تم تعيينها من قبل الوكيل اللبناني بلال خليل لدى عائلة كانت لطيفة تماماً معها، وسمحت لها بالتواصل مع عائلتها إلى حد مقبول، وقدمت لها غذاء جيداً. لكن إيشا كانت بحاجة إلى مساعدة طبية، ولم تكن الأسرة مستعدة لدفع نفقاتها الطبية، لذلك أعادوها إلى الوكالة.
قامت الوكالة بإعادة تعيينها في منزل أسرة لديها ثلاثة أطفال. وكانوا أكثر لطفاً معها، يغذّونها جيداً، ويسمحون لها بالاتصال أكثر مع عائلتها، و يدعونها لمرافقتهم إلى الكنيسة وأثناء التسوق. كما دفعوا لها كلفة إجراء العملية التي كانت تحتاجها. لكن إيشا لم تستردّ عافيتها سالمة، وأدركت أنها غير قادرة على مواصلة العمل. وبعد مناقشة الأمر معها، أعادها صاحب العمل إلى الوكالة، ودفع لها رواتبها المستحقة، مقدار 600 دولار، وأخبر الوكيل بأنه يلزم إعادة إيشا إلى بلدها لتعتني بها عائلتها.
فجأة أصبحت الحياة أسوأ من العمل في المناجم. لقد أخذ بلال خليل هاتفها، وراتبها 600 دولار الذي كان كل ما تملك. وعلى الرغم من آلامها و التهاب جرح العملية الكبير، رفض خليل شراء الدواء الموصوف لها، و قدم لها أية حبوب في متناول يده.
وجدت إيشا نفسها محبوسة في غرفة بلا نوافذ، تنام على مفرش إسفنجي رقيق على الأرضية الباردة.
و قام “سجّانها” بضربها وإذلالها وركلها بالقرب من مكان الشق الجراحي. قال لها بأنه عليها إما أن تعمل أو تدفع 6000 دولار للعودة إلى بلادها.
كانت هناك عدة نساء أخريات في الوكالة: بعضهن منذ شهور، وتعرضت كثيرات منهن للضرب، ولم يتم إطعام أي منهن على نحو لائق، و أخريات كنّ مكبلات اليدين. قالت إيشا وهي تصف خوفها من الموت في الوكالة:
«أعرف أنهم كانوا قادرين على [القتل]، لأنني رأيت فتاة محبوسة معنا وهي تموت. كانت فتاة إثيوبية نسميها “لولو”.
تعرضت لولو للضرب كل يوم. وكانت دائماً مكبلة اليدين. كانت تسعل دماً ومصابة بكدمات شديدة. ذات يوم، لاحظنا أنها لم تعد تتحرك. جاءت الشرطة للتحقيق في أمر الوفاة. فحذّرنا بلال من أنه إذا أخبرت إحدانا الشرطة بأنه قتل شخصاً، فستكون هي التالية. لذلك لم أقل شيئاً. لكنني كنت خائفة. لقد كانت أسوأ فترة عشتها في حياتي. حتى إنني فكرت في الانتحار».
تمكنت امرأة تشاركهنّ السجن من تهريب هاتف إلى الداخل، مع أنه سرعان ما تم أخذه منها. اغتنمت إيشا الفرصة واتصلت بشقيقتها، التي لجأت للمساعدة بالاتصال بجمعية “هذا لبنان” في 19 كانون الثاني. وفي اليوم التالي، أخبر الوكيل “هذا لبنان” أن إيشا حصلت على جميع حقوقها، وتحمل معها نقوداً، وستعود إلى ديارها بمجرد الانتهاء من تجهيز الأوراق. وزعم قائلاً: «لقد خدعتنا لأنها جاءت إلينا مريضة. لقد دفعنا كلفة ذلك كله. فلا يحق لها أن تدفع لها شركة التأمين لأنها كانت تعاني من مرض قديم. قمنا بكل الأمور اللازمة». لكن إيشا لم تعد إلى بلدها.
وجد “هذا لبنان” وسيلة للتواصل مع إيشا، والاستماع إلى قصتها، والعمل على إعادتها إلى الوطن. حينها كان بلال خليل في السجن لفترة وجيزة، قيد التحقيق بتهمة قتل لولو. أُطلِق سراحه بعد وقت قصير. في غضون ذلك، أخبر غسان خليل، والد بلال، “هذا لبنان” أن الوكالة ليست ملزمة بدفع نفقات إيشا الطبية، لكنها دفعت ثمن عمليتها بسبب “موقفهم النبيل”. وادّعى أن مبلغ الـستمائة دولار الذي أخذه كانت إيشا تدين به للوكالة بسبب مرضها وتوقفها عن العمل. «لقد أنفقنا الكثير من المال عليها. إنها تعيش وتأكل هنا. نحن ندير عملنا هنا». وقال بأن على جمعية “هذا لبنان” أن يشتروا تذكرة طيران إيشا إذا كانوا قلقين على أمرها.
واظب “هذا لبنان” في مساعيه. لقد كان من واجب الوكالة شراء التذكرة وإعادة راتب إيشا الذي كانت تحتاجه للوصول إلى مسقط رأسها والبدء من جديد. لكن لعدم رغبتهم في مزيد من الإشهار السلبي في تلك اللحظة المشينة من تاريخهم، أرسلت الوكالة إيشا إلى وطنها في منتصف آذار 2020 مع 200 دولار من راتبها البالغ 600 دولار. ويبدو أن الوكالة كانت تأمل بأن ينسى “هذا لبنان” أمر المبلغ المتبقي والبالغ 400 دولار. هذا مُستبعَد!
تحذّر إيشا الأخريات من العمل في لبنان:

በምዕራብ አፍሪካ ሲየራ ሊዮን ሃገር ተወላጅ የሆነችው ኢሻ ሳንኮህ በልጅነቷ ነበር ወላጆችዋን ያጣቸው። ታላቅ እህቶችና ወንድሞችዋ የኑሮ ውድነትና ችግርን እየተጋፈጡ ኢሻን አሳድጓታል። ኢሻህ አደግ ስትል ቤተሰቦቿን ለመርዳት ወስና የማዕደን ቁፈራ ስራ ትጀምራለች። በማእድን ስራ ማግኘቱ ለሴት ልጅ ብርቅ መሆኑን የምትገልጸው ኢሻ ስራው ጠንካራ እንዳደረጋትም ታስረዳለች።
ደሞዟ እጅግ በጣም ዝቅተኛ በመሆኑ ታላቅ ወንድም እህቶቿን የማገልገል አቅሟ ውስን ነበር። ስለሆነም ወደ ሊባኖስ ተሰድዳ በሰው ቤት ሰራተኝነት ለመቀጠር ወሰነች። በሲየራ ሊዮን ለሚንቀሳቀስ ደላላ 500 የአሜሪካ ዶላር ከፍላ በሰኔ 2011 ወደ ሊባኖስ ዋና ከተማ ቤሩት ትበራለች። ሊባኖስ እንደገባች አንድ ቢላል ኻሊል የተሰኘ ደላላ በቤሩት ከተማ ስራ ያገኝላታል። ኢሻ እንደምትለው አሰሪዎቿ ጥሩ ሰዎች የነበሩ ቢሆንም ኢሻ በገጠማት የጤና ችግርና አሰሪዎቿ የህክምና ወጪዎቿን መሸፈን ባለመፈለጋቸው ስራዋን አቋርጣ ወደ ደላላዋ ቢሮ ተመለሰች።
ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊል ወደ ሌላ ቤት አዘዋወዋት። ኢሻ ሶስት ልጆች ባሉበት ቤት ተቀጥራ መስራት ጀመረች። አዲሶቹ አሰሪዎቿ ደግሞ እጅግ በጣም ደግ ከመሆናቸው የተነሳ የህክምና ወጪዎቿን ሸፍነው አሳከሟት። እሁድ እሁድ አብረዋቸው ወደ ቤተ ክርስትያንም እንድሄድም ፈቀዱላት። ኢሻ በቤቱ ደስተኛ ብትሆንም የጤናዋ ሁኔታ ሊሻሻል ባለመቻሉ ምክንያት ስራውን መቀጠል አልቻለችም። አሰሪዎቿ የደሞዟ 600 ዶላር አስረክበውላት ወደ ደላላው ቢሮ ተላከች። አሰሪዎቿ ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊልን አግኝተውት ኢሻ ወደ ሃገሯ ተልካ ህክምናዋን መከታተል እንዳለባት አማከሩት።
ይሄንን ሲነገረው ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊል እጅግ በጣም ይበሳጫል። ኢሻን በደብደብ፤ በእርግጫ መምታትና መሳደብንም ጀመረ። የእጅ ስልኳንና የተሰጣት 600 ዶላር ደሞዟንም ቀማት። ኢሻ በከባድ ህመም ላይ ነበረች። አልፎ አልፎ በቢሮዉ የነበሩት ኪኒኖች እየሰጣት ወደ ሆስፒታል መሄዱን ከለከላት። በቢሮዉ የሚገኝ አንዲት መስኮት የሌለው ክፍል ውስጥ ተቀምጣ በር ተቆልፎባት መሄጃ አጣች። አብረዋት የቢሮዉ እስረኛ ሆነው ለወራት የተቀመጡ ከኢትዮጵያ ከጋና ከስሪ ላንካ የመጡ ሌሎች ስደተኞች ነበሩ። ቢላል ኻሊል እያንዳንዳቸውን እየደበደበ እየቀጠቀጠ ያሰቃይ የነበረ ሲሆን በካቴና ታስረው የተቀመጡና ለቀናት ሳይበሉ ተርበው ይቀመጡ የነበሩት ሴቶችም ጭምር አንደነበሩ ኢሻ ታካፍለናለች። ታጉረው ለተቀመጡት ስደተኞች የ6000 ዶላር ቅጣት ከከፈሉ ብቻ እንደሚለቀቁ ቢላል ኻሊል ይነግራችዋል።
ኢሻ ለህይወቷ መስጋት ጀመረች። “ከተወሰነ ቀናት ቦኋላ ደላላዬ እኔን ከመግደል ወደ ኋላ የሚል አይነት ሰው እንዳነበረ መረዳት ቻልኩ” ብላ አስረድታናለች ኢሻ። “እዛ በተቀመጥንበት አንዲት ሉሉ የምትባል ኢትዮጵያዊት ተዋውቄ ነበር። ሉሉ ላይ እጅግ በጣም ዘግናኝ ድብደባ ይፈጸምባት ነበር በየቀኑ። ደላላው እጆቿን እግሮቿን አሣስረው በትክክል መተንፈስም አቃታት። ሰውነቷ ቁስል በቁስል ሆኖ ሁሌ ደም ትተፋ ነበር። አንድ ቀን እዛው በተቀመጥንበት መንቀሳቀሱን አቆመች። ሉሉ ስትሞት የከተማ ፖሊስ መጥተው ጎበኙን። ከመምጣታቸው በፊት ለፖሊስ አንዲት ነገር የተነፈሰ ይገደላል ብሎ ዛተብን ቢላል ኻሊል። ስለዚህ ፈርቼ ዝም አልኩ። በህይወቴ መፈጠሬን የጠላሁበት ሰሞን ነበር። እራሴን ስለማጥፋት ሁሉ ማሰብ ጀመርኩ።”
ደላላው ቢላል ኻሊል እጅግ በጣም ጨካኝ አረመኔና በቤቱ በነበሩት አፍሪካውያን እስያውያን ሴቶች አሰቃቂ ግፍ ይፈጽም የነበረ ቢሆንም ሰውየው አንዲት “ቻይና” ተብላ የምትጠራ ኢትዮጵያዊት ፍቅረኛ እንደነበረው መረዳት ቻልን። አልፎ አልፎ ቢሮ እየመጣች እንደምታገለግለው ኢሻ አካፍላናለች። ለግዜው የቻይና ማንነት አልደረስንበትም።
በዚህ ሁኔታ ውስጥ በታጎሩበት አንዲት ተጨማሪ ስደተኛ ትቀላቀላችዋለች። ልጅታዋ ስልኳ የተቀማቸው በሁለተኛዋ ቀን ስለነበር በአንደኛው ቀን ኢሻ አጋጣሚውን ተጠቅማ ወደ እህቷ ደውላ ስለሁኔታዋ ያለውን ሁሉ ታስረዳታለች።
ቀጥሎ የኢሻ እህት ትብብራችን ፍለጋ ወደ “ይህ ነው ሊባኖስ” ደውላ እርዳታችን ጠየቀች። ከጥር 2012 ዓም ጀምሮ ይህ ነው ሊባኖስ የኢሻን ጉዳይ መከታተል ጀመረ።
ወደ ደላላው ቢሮ በመደወል ስልክ የመለሱትን በቢሮዉ እየተከሰተ ስላለው ድርጊት ሁሉን ማወቃችን አስረዳናቸው። ቢላል ኻሊል ገመናው ወጥቶ ተቋማችን ጋር በመድረሱ ተደናግጦ ኢሻ በቅርብ ቀን ገንዘቧን ይዛ ወደ ሃገሯ እንደምትመለስና ነገረን። እንደ እስረኛ ተቀምጣ መሰቃየቷ ምክንያቱ ምንድነው ብለን ጠየቅነው።
“ኢሻ አጭበርብራናለች!” ብሎ ምላሽ ሰጠን። “ከሃገሯ ስትመጣ ታምማ ነበር። እዚህ እንድመጣ ወጪ አውጥተን ከጤናዋ ምክንያት ከሁለት ወር በላይ እንኳን አንድ ቤት ተቀምጣ መስራት አትችልም ነበር። የተከፈላት ገንዘብ አይገባትም! አጭበርባሪ ናት!”
ትንሽ ቆይቶ ቢላል በስልኩ ከኛ ቢሮ የሚደውልለት ሁሉ ብሎክ በማድረግ እራሱን ለማሰወር ሞከረ። ቢላል ቃሉን አልጠበቀም፤ ኢሻም አልተለቀቀችም።
የሟቿ ኢትዮጵያዊት ሉሉ አገዳደልን የመረመረው የሊባኖስ ፖሊስ ለተወሰነ ቀናት ቢላል ኻሊልን አሳስረውት ነበር። እንደተለመደው በሰው ቤት ሰራተኞች መሞት ለፍርድ የሚቀርብ ሰው ጠፋ፤ ቢላል ያለምንም ቅጣት ከእስራት ተፈትቶ ወደ ስራው ተመለሰ።
በዚህ ግዜ ይህ ነው ሊባኖስ የአባቱ ጋሳን ኻሊል ቁጥር አፈላልፈን አገኘነው። ለአባትየው ያለው ሁኔታ አስረዳንና በኢሻ ጉዳይ ለቀቅ እንደማናደርጋቸውም ነገርነው። 600 ዶላር ከሷ ስለ መስረቃቸው አንስተንለት “ልጄ ኢሻን ስራ ለማስገባት ሞክሮ በመታመሟ ምክንያት ቢሮ አስቀጣት እያኖራት ነው ያለው። በነጻ እኛ ቢሮ ተቀምጣ እየበላች እየተኛች 600 ዶላርዋን ብንወስደው ምንድነው ጉዳቱ?” ብለው ምላሽ ሰጡን።
ከብዙ ግፊት ቦኋላ ለአባትየው ያለውን ነገር ካልፈትቱ ሙሉ ታሪኩ ከነፎቶዋቸው ከ120 ሺህ በላይ ተከታይ ባለው የፌስቡክ ገጻችን ላይ እንደምንለጥፈው ገለጽንለት። ጉዳዪ በመላው ሊባኖስ መነጋገርያ እንደሚሆን ሲረዱት አባት ልጁን አሳምኖ ለኢሻ የአየር ቲኬት ቆርጠውላት ወደ ሃገሯ ተመለሰች። ከ600 ዶላሩ 200 ዶላርን ብቻ መለሱላት።
ኢሻ ከነነፍሷ ወደ ሃገሯ በመመለሷ ደስተኛ ብትሆንም በቢሮዉ ጥላቸው ለሄዱት እህቶቿ በየቀኑ እንደምታስብላቸው ነገረችን።
“በሊባኖስ ያለው ሁኔታ በጣም መጥፎ ነው። ብዙ አፍሪካዊ እህቶቼ እየተሰቃዩ እየተገደሉ ነው ያሉት። ስራ ፍለጋ ወደ ሊባኖስ እንዳትሄዱ። ትልቅ ስህተት ነበር የሰራሁት።
በይህ ነው ሊባኖስ ያለን ሁሉ እስካሁን ድረስ በቢሮዋ የሞተችዋና ሉሉ ተብላ የምትጠራ የነበረችዋ ኢትዮጵያዊት ማንነት ልናውቀው አልቻልንም። ሉሉ ማን ልትሆን እንደምትችል ለምታውቁ በውስጥ መስመር መጥታችሁ ታሪኳን በማካፈል የእህታችን ሞት ተቀብሮ እንዳይቀር ተረባረቡላት።

TA: Two weeks ago now. Am tired of this place. I told them dat am going back to my country they not allow me
TIL: How many times has he raped you?
TA: 4 times now. I told my Nigeria agent he told them at office they don’t answer me
TA was near Bar Elias, not far from the Syrian border. The last we heard from her she had escaped. Communication with her was difficult because of her limited English. We put her in touch with another Yoruba speaker but have now lost contact with both of them. We believe enough time has passed that it is safe to post her story and warn others about this rapist. Someone must recognize him from the pic she sent us. Contact us if you know his name. We will add it to the article.

كانت “ت. أ” بالقرب من بر الياس، ليست بعيدة عن الحدود السورية. وآخر ما سمعناه عنها هو أنها قد هربت. كان يصعب التواصل معها بسبب لغتها الإنجليزية المحدودة. قمنا بوصلها مع شخص يتكلم اللغة اليوربية إلا أننا فقدنا الاتصال بكليهما. نعتقد أنه مضى وقت كافٍ ليكون من الآمن نشر قصتها وتحذير الآخرين من هذا المغتصب.

THE STORY
Shekainah went to Lebanon on the understanding that she would work as a ‘house help’. She was surprised to find that her duties included not only cleaning the house but also being nanny to a 14 month-old toddler. She wrote, “In my country the job description u sign for is exactly what u are going to do e.g you sign for nanny, house help or cook – any that you sign for that’s what you are going to be doing.” Not so in Lebanon.
Shekainah said she was overworked,
“Honestly too much over work as if the person working is not a human being like them or is it because of skin colour difference? They should know we are not machines.. that we are human beings like them with flesh and blood.”
Overwork was to become the least of her problems. In July, there was a problem with payment. When she insisted on being paid the $1200 she was owed, her employer began to abuse her physically. She wrote, “He started beating, kicking, punching and pushing me out of their house. Then I started screaming and some people came to my aid.” Her agent came and picked her up.
This Is Lebanon contacted her employers who were reluctant to pay. However, they were planning to move to Canada for the birth of their child and realized that non-payment could jeopardize their plans. The Canadian authorities would take a dim view of forced labour. Consequently, Shekainah received her full salary and is now with a new employer who is paying her regularly.
She expressed her gratitude:

ذهبت شيكاينه إلى لبنان على أساس أنها ستعمل “مساعدة منزلية”. لكنها فوجئت حين عرفت أن واجباتها لا تشتمل فقط على تنظيف المنزل بل رعاية طفل يبلغ من العمر 14 شهراً أيضاً. كتبت لنا: “في بلدي، وصف الوظيفة الذي توقع عليه هو بالضبط ما ستقوم به، على سبيل المثال، تقوم بالتوقيع على مربية أو مساعدة منزلية أو طاهية – أي شيء تقوم بالتوقيع عليه هو ما ستفعله”. ليس الأمر هكذا في لبنان.
قالت شيكاينه إنها كانت تعمل فوق طاقتها:
“بصراحة هناك الكثير من ضغط العمل وكأن العاملة ليست بشراً مثلهم أم هل هو بسبب اختلاف لون البشرة؟ يجب أن يعرفوا أننا لسنا آلات.. إننا بشر مثلهم من لحم ودم.”
كان الإفراط في العمل هو أصغر مشاكل شيكاينه. وفي تموز، كانت هناك مشكلة في الدفع. عندما أصرت شيكاينه على أن تتقاضى مستحقاتها المالية البالغة 1200 دولار، “بدأ يضربني ويركلني ويلكمني ودفعني بالقوة للخروج من منزلهم. ثم بدأت بالصراخ فجاء بعض الناس لمساعدتي.” جاء وكيلها وأخذها.
اتصلت جمعية “هذا لبنان” بأصحاب العمل الذين كانوا مترددين في الدفع. لحسن الحظ، كانوا يخططون للانتقال إلى كندا من أجل ولادة طفلهم وأدركوا أن عدم الدفع قد يعرض مخططهم للخطر. تنظر السلطات الكندية نظرة قاتمة إلى العمل القسري. حصلت شيكاينه على راتبها كاملاً، وهي الآن مع صاحب عمل جديد يدفع لها بانتظام.

THE STORY
Kifayat’s agents, Layla and Ahmad Fawwaz and Layla’s brother Mahmoud, are members in good standing of SORAL, the Syndicate of Recruitment Agencies in Lebanon. Like all agents in the Kafala system, they have tremendous power over the fate of migrant women, whom they are authorized by the government to recruit, effectively hold in custody, organize contracts with, and assign to employers. In theory, agents should look after the best interests of the domestic workers in their care and defend them against abusive employers. Kifayat’s treatment at the hands of her agents, the Fawwazes, demonstrates how distant the reality is from the theory.
A single mother, Kifayat left her two children with her mother in Nigeria in August, 2019 so that she could support them by working as a nanny in Lebanon. At least that is what the Nigerian agent on Facebook told her. It was a lie, according to Mahmoud, and Kifayat resigned herself to the thought of two years of work as a cleaner. Mahmoud claimed he did not have a potential employer, but he could put her to work cleaning his home on a temporary basis. Kifayat worked there for 17 days, and then was placed with Layla Fawwaz and her husband Ahmad, Mahmoud’s sister and brother-in-law, where she worked for two months. Neither Mahmoud nor Layla paid her for her services.
Kifayat was then placed with a couple who paid her but the husband began to pressure her for sexual favours. After four months, she went back to the agency. The Fawwazes were furious with her for leaving her employer, although she told them why she had quit. On February 15, 2020,
Kifayat alleges that Layla and Mahmoud confiscated her money and phone, took her to Batroun, and locked her there for two weeks without any food or drinking water, She claims they beat her daily.
When she asked why they were treating her this way, the Fawwazes replied, “You are not serious.”
Kifayat worked for another employer for a month, but the employer did not pay her, so she returned to the agency. Due to the financial crisis and Covid-19, the Nigerian embassy was, for a brief period, offering to send its workers home, and Kifayat was able to get on the list for a July 17 flight. She says that when she told Mahmoud she wanted to go home he threatened to kill her. She reports being taken outside to a wooded area, tied first by the hands and then around her body to a tree, and beaten severely by Fawwaz family members. She missed her flight. Finally, Kifayat claims:
Mahmoud, who is a government-licensed agent, forced her at gunpoint to drink Clorox.
She managed to make a video of herself suffering the aftereffects of ingesting bleach and send it to someone nearby before Mahmoud again confiscated her phone. The recipient sent the video to TIL, believing that Kifayat had attempted suicide because of her despair at the ill-treatment of her agents, who are members in good standing of SORAL. TIL phoned Mahmoud immediately.
Mahmoud was making manaqeesh when he answered the call. Informed that Kifayat had ingested a caustic cleaning agent, Mahmoud, who is an agent in good standing with SORAL, initially pooh-poohed the report. Urged to check, he said he would after he had finished making the manaqeesh. He phoned back later to say there was no problem, and that Kifayat was a liar who had made a similar video 16 days before. Reminded that he was legally responsible for Kifayat and that TIL had informed the Nigerian embassy Kifayat had taken bleach, he became indignant: “I don’t give a sh** don’t talk to me like this way”. Mahmoud claimed that he would never hold a person against her will and would certainly take her to the embassy the following day. When we were finally able to speak directly with Kifayat she was weeping. She asked for medical help, which she claims she never received. We reassured her she was going home.
Two days later, Mahmoud, who is licensed by the government and an agent in good standing with SORAL, left Kifayat in front of the Nigerian embassy with nothing but her passport and the clothes she was wearing. By then, the Oyo state was no longer helping its domestic workers go home. Kifayat lived for a month on the streets of Beirut with no job, no money, no protection or legal status. She survived because TIL and the Nigerian embassy gave her food from time to time. Eventually the embassy arranged for Kifayat to fly home from the land of nightmares. Without her salary, Kifayat has not been able to begin the small business she had dreamed of creating, and she and her children are living in dire poverty.
Three other domestic workers have complained to This Is Lebanon about being constantly moved from house to house by the Fawwazes agency and being dumped in front of the embassy without their salaries or possessions. Kifayat is not their only victim. Layla Fawwaz and her brother Mahmoud remain members of SORAL, with Lebanese government authorization to control the destinies of migrant domestic workers.

كفايات هي أم وحيدة تركت طفليها مع والدتها في نيجيريا في آب 2019 لكي تتمكن من إعالتهما بأن تعمل مربية أطفال في لبنان. على الأقل هذا ما قاله لها الوكيل النيجيري على الفيسبوك. كان ذلك كذبة، بحسب محمود فواز، فأذعنت كفايات لفكرة عامين من العمل في التنظيف. لقد ادعى محمود أنه ليس لديه صاحب عمل محتمل، لكن بإمكانه أن يجعلها تعمل في تنظيف منزله بشكل مؤقت. فعملت كفايات هناك لمدة 17 يوماً، ثم أرسلها إلى منزل ليلى فواز وزوجها أحمد، أخت محمود وزوج أخته، حيث عملت لمدة شهرين. ولم يدفع لها محمود أو ليلى مقابل خدماتها.
ثم تعيّنت كفايات لدى صاحب عمل لزوجين دفعا لها أجورها لكنهما بدأا في الضغط عليها من أجل ممارسة الجنس. فعادت إلى المكتب بعد أربعة أشهر. وثار غضب عائلة فواز عليها لأنها تركت صاحب عملها، رغم أنها أخبرتهما عن سبب مغادرتها. في 15 شباط 2020، قامت ليلى ومحمود بمصادرة أموالها وهاتفها، على حد قولها. وأخذاها إلى البترون، وحبساها هناك لمدة أسبوعين دون أي طعام أو ماء للشرب، و كانوا يضربونها يومياً، حسب قولها. وعندما سألت عن سبب معاملتهم لها بهذه الطريقة، قالا لها: “لست جادة”.
عملت كفايات لدى صاحب عمل آخر مدة شهر، غير أنه لم يدفع لها أجرها، لذا عادت إلى المكتب. وبسبب الأزمة المالية وكوفيد 19، عرضت السفارة النيجيرية، لفترة وجيزة، إرسال عمالها إلى الوطن، وتمكنت كفايات من الانضمام إلى القائمة لرحلة 17 يوليو. تقول بأنه عندما أخبرت محمود أنها تريد العودة إلى بلدها هدّد بقتلها. وأفادت بأنها اقتيدت إلى منطقة حراجية، وقُيِّدَت يداها أولاً ثم رُبِطَ جسدها إلى شجرة، وتعرضت للضرب المبرح على أيدي أفراد عائلة فواز. ولم تلحق برحلتها. أخيراً:
قام محمود، وهو وكيل مرخّص له من الحكومة، بإجبارها تحت تهديد السلاح على شرب كلوروكس، كما تقول كفايات.
فتمكنت من تصوير فيديو لها وهي تعاني من آثار تناول المادة المبيّضة وإرسالها إلى شخص في الجوار قبل أن يصادر محمود هاتفها مرة أخرى. أرسل المتلقي الفيديو إلى “هذا لبنان”، معتقدة أن كفايات حاولت الانتحار بسبب يأسها من سوء معاملة وكيلَيها، اللذين هما عضوان مرموقان في SORAL. فاتصلت جمعية “هذا لبنان” بمحمود على الفور.
كان محمود يحضّر المناقيش عندما أجاب على المكالمة. وبعد إبلاغه أن كفايات قد تناولت مادة تنظيف كاوية، استخفّ محمود بالخبر في البداية، وهو وكيل يتمتع بسمعة جيدة مع SORAL . وبالإلحاح عليه ليقوم بالتحقق، قال بأنه سيفعل ذلك بعد أن ينتهي من إعداد المناقيش. اتصل لاحقاً ليقول بأنه لا توجد مشكلة، وأن كفايات كاذبة، فقد قامت بتصوير فيديو مشابه قبل 16 يوماً. ولدى تذكيره بأنه مسؤول قانونياً عن كفايات وأن “هذا لبنان” أبلغ السفارة النيجيرية أن كفايات قد تناولت مادة منظفة للتبييض، غضب: “أنا لا أعطي شيئاً **، لا تتحدثوا معي بهذه الطريقة”. وادّعى محمود أنه لن يقوم باحتجاز إنسانة أبداً ضد إرادتها وسيصطحبها بالتأكيد إلى السفارة في اليوم التالي. وحين استطعنا أخيراً من التحدث مباشرة مع كفايات كانت تبكي. طلبت المساعدة الطبية، التي لم تتلقاها أبداً، حسب قولها. طمأنّاها بأنها عائدة إلى وطنها.
بعد يومين، قام محمود، الحاصل على ترخيص من الحكومة ووكيل حسن السمعة في SORAL، بإلقاء كفايات أمام السفارة النيجيرية ولم يكن بحوزتها إلا جواز سفرها والملابس التي كانت ترتديها. حينذاك، لم تعد ولاية أويو تساعد عاملات المنازل في العودة إلى ديارهن. فعاشت كفايات لمدة شهر في شوارع بيروت بلا عمل أو مال أو حماية وبدون أن يكون لها وضع قانوني. لقد بقيت على قيد الحياة لأن “هذا لبنان” والسفارة النيجيرية كانا يقدمان لها الطعام من وقت لآخر. في نهاية المطاف رتبت السفارة لعودة كفايات من أرض الكوابيس إلى بلدها على متن الطائرة. بدون راتبها، ليست قادرة كفايات على بدء المشروع الصغير الذي كانت تحلم بإنشائه، والآن تعيش هي وأطفالها في فقر مدقع.
لقد اشتكت ثلاث عاملات منازل أخريات لـجمعية “هذا لبنان” من نقلهنّ باستمرار من منزل إلى منزل من قبل وكالة “فواز” وإلقائهن أمام السفارة دون رواتبهن أو ممتلكاتهن. وما يزال محمود فواز وليلى فواز عضوين في SORAL ، بتفويض من الحكومة اللبنانية للتحكم في مصير عاملات المنازل المهاجرات.

وصلت “ديبي” إلى لبنان قادمة من نيجيريا في تموز 2019. اتصلت لأول مرة بـجمعية “هذا لبنان” في نيسان 2020، تطلب المساعدة لأن آخر مرة قبضت فيها راتبها كانت منذ أشهر، وكانت تعاني من التعنيف الجسدي.
“هربتُ عندما بدأت تضربني للمرة الأولى، فأمسكت بي من جديد على الطريق، وأخذتني إلى مركز الشرطة، وقال الأمن العام أنه يجب عليها أن تعطيني أموالي وجواز سفري ثم تأخذني إلى السفارة، لكنها قالت: لا..”.
اشترى “هذا لبنان” ل “ديبي” تذكرة العودة إلى نيجيريا في أيلول 2020. وكانت في غاية الامتنان. كتبت لنا: “شكراً لكم على مساعدتي في العودة إلى بلدي بسلام وليس قطع أشلاء.”
THE STORY
On 27 February, 2019 Cheryl* arrived in Lebanon to work as a housemaid for Mr. Qassem Bayram and his wife, Rana Eid, who live in Al Wardanieh. At first, everything went really well. Rana welcomed Cheryl warmly and she felt at home. Rana bought Cheryl everything she needed. The salary was to be $250 per month, the standard salary for a Kenyan. Things turned sour at the end of the first month when it was time for Cheryl to receive her salary. Rana paid her only $200. Cheryl says that when she tried to complain and ask why she wasn’t paid the amount in the contract, Rana was furious so she had no choice but to be quiet and accept.
Cheryl says that after the first month, Rana began to change.
“She could shout at me from morning to evening just because of small mistakes. If I forget to do something she could even slap me. If I am playing with the baby and the baby cry a little she shout and even beat me.”
Cheryl said that she began to cry every day. Twice she contacted her Lebanese agent for help but was told that if she wanted to change houses she would have to pay the agent all the money spent bringing her to Lebanon. Cheryl said she “decided to persevere because I really wanted to work.” But her troubles were only just beginning.
Cheryl said that Qassem Bayram began to sexually assault her. She wrote about her time in the house:
“When I was washing the dishes he came at my back and placed his penis on my buttocks and he had just woken up. He was without a t-shirt on the top and with only a boxer. I walked away and told him to stop or I will tell his wife. He started being harsh after that.”
She said that after she refused him he grew a grudge towards her. “One day he sent me to make coffee and at the same time the madam’s mother sent me to make the Argile, so I put water on the gas and ran to bring the Argile before the water boiled.. While I was making the Argile I heard Mr calling me. I went quickly. Then he just started shouting at me. He asked me why I haven’t given him the coffee. When I tried to explain he slapped me very hard. I cried. The mother of my madam came from the other house. I could not say what the Mr had been doing to me because I didn’t have evidence against him. I tried to record some clips on my phone but my phone wasn’t able to play them after the recording..and so I decided to just run away.
“They said I stole diamonds, gold and money but I swear to my living God I came out of that house with the clothes on my body and my Bible.”
After Cheryl ran away she reported to the consulate. This Is Lebanon was able to find her a safe place to stay. She was fortunate to be able to find work with a foreign family who paid her $500 per month until she returned to Kenya in late 2020.

في 27 شباط 2019، وصلت شيريل * إلى لبنان لتعمل عاملة منزل لدى السيد قاسم بَيرم وزوجته رنا عيد من منطقة الوردانية. في البداية، سار كل شيء على ما يرام بالفعل. فقد رحبت رنا بشيريل بحرارة وشعرت كأنها في بيتها. اشترت رنا لشيريل كل ما تحتاجه. كان الراتب 250 دولاراً في الشهر، وهو الراتب الطبيعي للعاملات الكينيات. لكن الأمور ساءت في نهاية الشهر الأول عندما حان الوقت لشيريل أن تقبض راتبها. دفعت رنا لها 200 دولار فقط. تقول شيريل إنه عندما حاولت أن تشتكي وتسأل عن سبب عدم إعطائها المبلغ المتفق عليه في العقد، ثار غضب رنا، وهكذا لم يكن لديها خيار سوى التزام الصمت والقبول.
تقول شيريل أنه بعد الشهر الأول، بدأت رنا تتغير.
“كان بمقدورها أن تصرخ في وجهي من الصباح إلى المساء لمجرد أخطاء صغيرة. وإذا نسيتُ أن أفعل شيئاً، كان بإمكانها حتى أن تصفعني. إن كنت ألعب مع الطفل وبكى قليلاً، كانت تصرخ وتضربني حتى.”
قالت شيريل أنها راحت تبكي كل يوم. اتصلت مرتين بوكيلها اللبناني للحصول على المساعدة، لكن قيل لها بأنها إذا أرادت تغيير المنزل، فعليها أن تدفع للوكيل كل الأموال التي أنفقها على إحضارها إلى لبنان. قالت شيريل “قررتُ أن أحتمل لأنني بالفعل كنت أرغب بالعمل.” غير أن مشاكلها كانت قد بدأت للتّو.
كان لدى قاسم بيرم غايات تجاه عاملة المنزل الجديدة شيريل وبدأ يتحرش بها جنسياً. عندما ضغطنا عليها للحصول على معلومات، كتبت:
“بينما كنت أغسل الصحون، جاء من ورائي ووضع قضيبه على مؤخرتي وكان قد استيقظ للتو. كان عاري الصدر ويرتدي سرواله الداخلي فقط. ابتعدت عنه وطلبت منه أن يتوقف وإلا سأخبر زوجته. بعد ذلك بدأ يتصرف بقسوة “
قالت إنه بعد أن رفضته أصبح يحمل ضغينة تجاهها. “ذات يوم طلب مني صنع القهوة وفي الوقت نفسه طلبت والدة السيدة أن أعدّ لها النارجيلة، لذلك وضعت الماء على الغاز وركضت لإحضار النارجيلة قبل أن يغلي الماء.. وبينما كنت أحضّر النارجيلة سمعت السيد يناديني. ذهبت بسرعة. فبدأ بالصراخ في وجهي. سألني لماذا لم أحضر له القهوة. عندما حاولت أن أشرح له صفعني بشدة. فبكيت. جاءت والدة سيدتي من المنزل الآخر. لم أستطع أن أقول ما كان السيد يفعله بي لأنه لم يكن لدي دليل ضده. حاولت تسجيل بعض المقاطع على هاتفي لكن هاتفي فشل في تشغيلها بعد التسجيل .. ولذا قررت الهرب.
“قالوا إنني سرقت الماس والذهب والمال ولكني أقسم بالله الحي أنني خرجت من ذلك المنزل بالملابس التي أرتديها والكتاب المقدس الخاص بي.”
تنتهي قصة شيريل هناك، إلا أن القصة لم تكتمل. فقد أبلغ أحد الوكلاء جمعية “هذا لبنان” أن قاسم ورنا استبدلا شيريل بعاملة منزل إثيوبية والتي عادت إلى بلدها في آب 2020 دون أن تقبض أجورها. لكن للأسف، لم نتمكن من الاتصال بها.

THE STORY
“She loved life and she loved her family,” Tigist Tafesse says while fighting back tears when asked to describe her late sister Desta.
“All she wanted to do was earn enough money to cover her younger brother’s schooling expenses. She didn’t deserve this. Nobody deserves this.”
Tigist’s younger sister Desta, 26, had left her native Ethiopia in search of employment as a domestic worker in Lebanon. It’s a route that many young Ethiopian women take in search of income that could potentially revamp the livelihoods of impoverished families back home. Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians have flocked to Lebanon over the past decades. And while some do manage to earn a living and send valuable remittances to loved ones in Ethiopia, an increasing number of them are instead entrapped in a cycle of isolation, endless unpaid toiling, food deprivation, horrific abuse and all too often, death.
It was the tragic fate of Desta, who had spent over a year at the home of a Lebanese couple in the city of Byblos, some 30 kilometers north of Beirut.
Desta Tafesse
Her employers were Mr. Helou Hayek and his wife Wafaa Hayek who reside at the Kouba building, near the official high school, Byblos. Mr Hayek’s phone number is +9613621686. Over the course of the last year and a half of her life, Tigist says her sister was never allowed to leave the house and was subjected to ghastly abuse
“They burnt her, beat her and kept her as a slave all this time,” Tigist laments. “I tried everything I could to rescue her.”
Tigist contacted nearby friends in a desperate attempt to hatch an escape plot. She had initially attempted to solicit the aid of a worker’s rights organization in Lebanon, but Desta had begged her not to. She feared that doing so would enrage her captors and result in brutal repercussions for her.
Desta died an untimely death on May 12 2019, after toiling for 14 months without pay. Her death wasn’t considered worthy of a Lebanese police investigation. As is normal in Lebanon, her death was classified as a suicide.

Lebanese police appear unwilling to prosecute anyone suspected of migrant worker abuse, no matter how obvious her mistreatment was.
Prior to her tragic death, Desta, who had limited contact with her family, sent her sister Tigist gruesome images showing horrific burn injuries to her hands on Whatsapp. Heavily bandaged and incapacitated, Desta’s suffering reached its peak in her final days at the Hayek family home, which were also the final days of her life.
Despite being left with injuries that would appear to have rendered it impossible to even grasp objects with her hands, the Lebanese police decided not to question her employers’ claim that she used those same incapacitated hands to make a noose out of an electrical cord and hang herself. The full Lebanese police report, which we’ve obtained here, includes a medical examination by a forensic specialist in Dr. Elias Al Khoury.
Strangely enough, even Dr. Elias is noted as having acknowledged Desta’s burn wounds and bandaged hands, which he states were likely the result of an electrocution. But he still somehow concludes that Desta, bandaged and injured hands, mustered up the strength needed to hang herself.

Desta worked seven days a week and had not been paid for 14 months. Helou and Wafaa Hayak, who are confirmed to have enslaved a young woman confining her to their home for over a year, got off scot free, despite evidence pointing to additional mistreatment and horrific abuse meted out against their employee.
“I didn’t even care about her being paid anymore, I just wanted her out of there alive.”
“I still haven’t come to terms with my sister’s death,” her sister Tigist Tafesse says.
Helou and Wafaa Hayek never paid Desta during the year and a half or so she spent working in their home. With the paltry $150 US monthly rate which Ethiopian domestic workers are hired under, the Hayek family currently owes Desta’s family over $2000 US, which of course doesn’t take into account damages for the confinement and any horrendous abuse suffered.

أديس أبابا، 25 تموز 2019 – «كانت تحب الحياة كما أنها أحبت عائلتها أيضاً»، تقول تيغيست تافيس وهي تحبس دموعها حين طُلِب منها أن تصف أختها الراحلة ديستا.
«كل ما أرادت فعله هو أن تكسب ما يكفي من المال لتغطية نفقات تعليم أخيها الأصغر. لم تكن تستحق هذا. لا أحد يستحق هذا»
كانت ديستا، شقيقة تيغيست الصغرى، 26 سنة، قد تركت وطنها إثيوبيا بحثاً عن عمل كمساعدة منزلية في لبنان. وهو طريق تسلكه الكثيرات من الشابات الإثيوبيات سعياً وراء دخلٍ يمكن أن يكون مصدراً جديداً لكسب الرزق لدى العائلات الفقيرة في الوطن. وقد تدفقت مئات الآلاف من الإثيوبيات إلى لبنان على مدى العقود الماضية. وبينما تتمكن بعضهن من كسب لقمة العيش وتحويل مبالغ قيّمة إلى أحبائهن في إثيوبيا، فإن أعداداً متزايدة منهن تقع في شرك دوامة من العزلة والكدح الدائم والحرمان من الطعام والانتهاكات المروّعة وفي كثير من الأحيان الموت.
وكان هذا هو المصير المأساوي للعاملة دستا التي مكثت لأكثر من عام في منزل زوجين لبنانيين في مدينة جبيل، تبعد حوالي 30 كيلومتراً شمال بيروت.
ديستا
كان صاحب العمل هو السيد حايك حلو، بناء القبة، قرب المدرسة الثانوية الرسمية، جبيل. رقم هاتف السيد حلو هو 9613621686+. تقول تيغيست إنه على مدار العام الماضي، لم يُسمح لشقيقتها بمغادرة المبنى إطلاقاً وأنها تعرضت لانتهاكات مروّعة.
«لقد أحرقوها وضربوها واحتفظوا بها عبدة طوال هذه المدة»، تقول تيغيست بحسرة. «حاولتُ كل ما في وسعي لإنقاذها».
اتصلت تيغيست بأصدقاء في الجوار في محاولة يائسة لتدبير خطة هروب. وحاولت في البداية التماس مساعدة منظمة حقوق العمال في لبنان، لكن ديستا توسلت إليها ألا تفعل ذلك. إذ كانت تخشى أن يثير ذلك غضب آسريها وتكون ردة فعلهما وحشية عليها.
جاءت وفاة ديستا بشكل مفاجئ في 12 أيار، بعد أن شقيت كادحة مدة 14 شهراً دون أجر. لم يكن موتها يستحق تحقيقاً من قبل الشرطة اللبنانية. وكما هي العادة في لبنان، تم تصنيف وفاتها على أنها انتحار.
هل يمكن أن تكون ديستا قد ربطت حبل مشنقتها بهذه الأيدي المصابة؟
يبدو أن الشرطة اللبنانية لا ترغب في محاكمة أي شخص يُشتبَه به في إساءة معاملته لعاملة مهاجرة، بغض النظر عن مدى وضوح سوء معاملتها.
وعلى الرغم من تعرضها لإصابات كان يبدو أنه يستحيل عليها حتى إمساك الأشياء بيديها، قررت الشرطة اللبنانية عدم التشكيك في ادعاء صاحب العمل أنها استخدمت تلك الأيدي العاجزة نفسها لصنع حبل مشنقة من سلك كهربائي وشنق نفسها. عملت ديستا سبعة أيام في الأسبوع ولم تحصل على أجرها مدة 14 شهراً. تقول شقيقتها تيغيست تافيس:
«لم أكن حتى مهتمة بأن تتقاضى رواتبها، بل كنت أريد فقط أن تخرج من هناك على قيد الحياة. ولم أزل حتى الآن غير متقبلة لوفاة أختي»

“ቤተሰቦቿን እጅግ በጣም አድርጋ የምትወድ እህቴ ነበረች” ትላለች ወጣት ትግስት ታፈሰ ስለ እህቷ ሲነሳ። የትግስት ታናሽ እህት ደስታ ታፈሰ ስራ ፍለጋ ወደ ሊባኖስ ከተሰደዱ በርካታ ኢትዮጵያውያን እህቶቻችን አንዷ ስትሆን የዛሬ 2 ዓመት ገደማ የ26 ዓመቷ ደስታ በአሰሪዎቿ ቤት እያለች በወቅቱ ባልታወቀ ምክንያት ህይወቷ አጥታለች። “ሰርቼ ተለውጬ ወንድሜንም አስተምሯለሁ ትለን ነበር” ብላ እያነባች አስረድታናለች እህቷ ትግስት። “ወጥቶ መቅረቱ ፈጽሞ አይገባትም ነበር ውዷ እህቴ።”
እንደ ደስታ ታፈሰ በዳኔ ያሉት በመቶ ሺህዎች የሚቆጠሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን እህቶቻችን ኑሮ ለማሸነፍ ወላጅ የመጦር እቅድ ይዘው ከሃገራቸው ተነስተው ወደ መካከለኛው ምስራቅ ተሰድደዋል። በአሁኑ ሰዓት በሀገረ ሊባኖስ ያሉት የኢትዮጵያውያን ቤት ሰራተኞች ቁጥር ከ3 መቶ ሺህ በላይ ነው ተብሎ ይገመታል። በሊባኖስ ያሉት ስደተኞቹ እህቶቻችን መካከል ተቀጥረው ገንዘብ አጠራቅመው ተለውጠው ወደ ሃገራቸው የሚመለሱ ዜጎች አሉ። ሆኖም ግን ሳይቀናቸው በአሰሪዎቻቸው ደሞዝ ተከልክለው የቤት በር ተዘግቶባቸው ተርበው የሰብዓዊ መብት ጥሰት ሰለባ ሆነው የሚንከራተቱ ህይወታቸውንም የሚያጡ ከኢትዮጵያና ከመላው አፍሪካና እሲያ የሚመጡ በርካታ ምስኪን ስደተኞች አሉ።
በሊባኖስ በየ ሳምንቱ በአማካኙ 2 የሰው ቤት ሰራተኞች ህይወት ይቀጠፋል። በሊባኖስ ባለው “ከፈላ” ተብሎ የሚጠራው የህግ አሰራር ሊባኖሳዊ አሰሪዎች ለሰራተኞቻቸው ሞትና ስቃይ በህግ እንዳይጠየቁ ከለላ ይሰጣችዋል።
ወጣቷ ኢትዮጵያዊት ደስታ ታፈሰ በሊባኖስ ዋና ከተማ ቤሩት የ30 ኪሎሜትር ርቀት ላይ የሚገኘው የቢብሎስ ከተማ ስራ ታገኛለች። በቢብሎስ ከተማ ከሁለተኛ ደረጃው ትምህርት ቤት ቅርብ የሆነው የኩባ ህንጻ አከባቢ በሙሉ ስሙ ሄሉ ሃየክ ተብሎ የሚጠራ ሊባኖሳዊ አሰሪና ባለቤቱ ዋፋ ሃየክ ቤት ገብታ መስራት ትጀምራለች። ሄሉ ሃየክ የተባለው አሰሪ ስልክ ቁጥሩ እንደሚከተለው ነው +9613621686።
እንደ ታላቅ እህቷ ትግስት ታፈሰ አገላለጽ ደስታ ስራዋን በጥር 2010 ዓም ጀምራ በአንድ ዓመት ተኩል ቆይታዋ በሳምንት ስባቱን ቀን እየፈጋች ከቤት መውጣቱ እረፍት መውሰዱ ተከልክላ አንዴም እንኳን ደሞዝ ሳትቀበል ኢትዮጵያ ላሉት ቤተሰቦቿ ገንዘብ ለመላክ አላበቃችም። በአንድ ዓመት ተኩል ቆይታዋ በፈረቃ እህቷ ትግስትን በስልክ ይገናኙ እንደነበርና በአሰሪዎቿ ቤት ደስታ እጅግ በጣም ትሰቃይ እንደነበርም ጨምራ አካፍላናለች።
“ደስታን በባርነት እያንከራተቷት ደስ ሲላቸው እየደበደቧት፤ ያቃጥላትም ነበር። ያለውን ስታስረዳኝ እጅግ በጣም እጨነቅና እንቅልፍ ይሰናስኝ ስለነበር እህቴ ከአሰሪዎቿ ቤት የምታመልትበት ሁኔታ ለማመቻቸት ሞከርኩ።”
ትግስት የምታደርገውን ስታጣ በአከባቢው የሚኖሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን ጋር እየደወለች ትብብራቸውን ትለምን ነበር። እህቷ ተስፋ እንዳትቆርጥ እያጽናናቻት በሊባኖስ ወዳሉት የሰበዓዊ መብት ድርጅቶች የመደወል እቅድ እንደነበራትም ለእህቷ ታካፍላለች። ደስታ ይሄንን በሰማች ወቅት እጅግ በጣም ደንግጣ እህቷ ስለሁኔታዋ ለማንም እንዳትተነፍስ ታስጠነቅቃታለች። ገመናቸው ቢጋለጥ ይገሉኛል ብላ ትፈራ እንደነበር ለእህቷ አካፍላለች።
ግንቦት 4 ዕለት 2010 ዓም ደስታ ታፈሰ በዳኔ ከዚህ ዓለም በሞት ተለየችን። ለአንድ ዓመት ተኩል እንደ እስረኛ ተይዛ በዙ ስቃይ አይታ ህይወቷ ቢቀጠፍም የሊባኖስ ፖሊስ ጉዳዩን ላለመመርመር ወስኖ እንኳን ለህግ መቅረብ የካሳ ኢንሹራንስ ክፍያ እንኳን ለቤተሰብ ያደረሰ አካል የለም። የሊባኖስ ፖሊስ የረባ ምርመራ ሳያካሄድ ደስታ እራሷን አጥፍታ መሞቷን መዝግበው አስቀመጡ።
በሊባኖስ ያሉት የሰው ቤት ሰራተኞች ዘግናኝ አሟሟት በመረጃ ቢደገፍም ፖሊስ ለሰው ቤት ሰራተኞች ላላቸው ዝቅተኛ እይታ እና በሃገሪቷ ባለው የከፈላ አሰራር ምክንያት ግልጽ የሆነ ወንጀል ተፈጽሞ ፖሊስ አስክሬን ለኢትዮጵያ ቆንስላ ከማስረከብ ውጪ ሌላ እርምጃ አይወስድም።
ከመሞቷ ጥቂት ቀናት በፊት ደስታ ተቃጥላ በእጆቿ የደረሳት አስከፊ ጉዳትና ጠባሳ ፎቶዎች አንስታ በዋትሳፕ ያለውን ለእህቷ ትግስት ትልካለች። እነዚህ ለማየት የሚዘገንኑ ፎቶዎች ደስታ እጆቿ ተጎድተው ከጥቅም ውጪ ሆነው እንደነበሩ ያሳያሉ። ሆኖም ግን በስሟ የተከፈተው የሊባኖስ ፖሊስ መዝገብ ደስታ አሰሪዎቿ ባልነበሩበት ወቅት በነዚህ በተቃጠሉት እጆቿ ገመድ አስራ እራሷን አንቃ እንደሞተች ይገልጻል። በትንሹ አሳማኝ በሆነ መንገድ ለመዋሸት አለመጣራቸው በፖሊስና በመንግስት ደረጃ ለሰው ቤት ሰራተኞች ያለው ንቀት ጎላ አድርጎ የሚያሳይ ነው።
“እኔ እህቴ ከነነፍሷ ከነዛ አረመኔዎች ቤት ወጥታ ወደ ሃገሯ እንድትመለስ ነበር ፍላጎታችን። የ14 ወር ደሞዟ ጉዳይ በጭራሽ ለደቂቃ እንኳን አላሳሰበንም ነበር። የደስታ ሞት እስካሁን ድረስ መቀበሉ አቅቶኛል።” -ታላቅ እህቷ ትግስት ታፈሰ በዳኔ።

ከማረፏ ጥቂት ቀናት በፊት ደስታ በእጆቿ የደረሳት አስከፊ ጉዳት የሚያሳዩ እነዚህ ሁለት ፎቶዎች ለእህቷ በዋትሳፕ ልካ ነበር። እንደ ሊባኖስ ፖሊስ አቋም እህታችን ደስታ እጆቿ በዚህ ሁኔታ በነበሩበት ነው ገመድ በአንገቷ አሳስራ እራሷን ያነቀችው። ማንን የሸወዱ መስልዋቸው ነው ግን?
